Chapter 2:

Meet The Press, Dopeman!

I never expected to blow up an entire saloon on the job but here we are. I needed to get out of California, so I took the Desert Train out. What a marvel, the train is. It was made in five years by the Miller Corps to supply their soldiers and make travel easier. Fighting desert monsters wasn't on my job description. The only problem was the train was expensive. Twenty gold per state? Geez. Good thing I was only going to Nevada to get my payment. I paid the fee, got the paper ticket, and sat down in my seat next to the window. My eyelids became heavy. I closed them, slipping into dreamland. Bookmark here

"Hey, babe!" A female voice heightens my senses. I look around. There are...buildings. Concrete. people in... modern clothes. I smell the gas of vehicles, the aroma of popcorn from a nearby vendor. There's no doubt about it. I'm home. San Francisco. I looked to my right, there was somebody hanging off it. A woman. I couldn't see her face fully, everything was so blurry. All I can see is the color of her hair: White. Bookmark here

The Girl with White hair kissed my cheek. It felt good. I wanted her to kiss me again. "Let's go to the movies. I heard there was a good romantic movie on!" Her voice was at a perfect pitch. It was like a goddess speaking into my soul. I wanted her to talk forever. I blink, and she's gone. I look all around me, all I see is sand suddenly. Oh yeah. Now I'm really home... Bookmark here

My eyes open a few hours later. I sighed and took a sip of my room temperature water. It was gonna be a long trip. I then get a tap on my shoulder. It was a woman, wearing a simple button-up shirt with dirty brown slacks. She had suspenders, a brown press cap, and short brown hair that matched her brown eyes. "Excuse me, are you the Foolish Courier?" She asked me. She wasn't a bounty hunter it seemed, so I leaned back in my seat. "Depending on who's asking. What's your goal here?" Bookmark here

"I'm Harper Atlas, of the Desertland News. I'm doing a story about the Foolish Courier and his exploits. Would you care to help me?" Bookmark here

"Depends," I respond while sipping my water. "What's in it for me?" Bookmark here

Harper pulls her slightly broken glasses and notebook out. "Well, your legend will be solidified! Who wouldn't want that?" Bookmark here

"Me. I'm not exactly a fan of Foolish Courier anyways. I hated that nickname." Bookmark here

"How'd you even get it in the first place? That'll be a good chapter in the story!" Harper excitedly started to jot the title in her notebook. Bookmark here

I sighed and shook my head. Not a fan of this story but I'll tell it anyway. "Well... It was 4 years ago. I was doing a delivery from New York to Miami. When I reached South Carolina, I caught a bounty. It was 1 thousand for property damage and resisting arrest. I was in a fight with someone. The prick was..." I started clenching my fist. My least favorite part. "Beating his daughter in the street, like badly. He started punching her. I had to stop him, so I kicked his ass. Turns out, he was the sheriff. Got me locked up as soon as he could snap his fingers. I only had a week in there, but I had to get this package delivered so I... Made a makeshift bomb. I destroyed the cell wall, grabbed my gear, and left." Bookmark here

"Wow...You really are an idiot." Harper laughs and finishes writing in her notebook. "You only had a week! Why leave? Really? The job?" Bookmark here

I scoffed and finished my water. "I'm not just any courier. I'm the guy who makes cross country trips to get things done." Bookmark here

"And why even go through that much effort to even get things done?" Bookmark here

"I have a reputation to uphold. This is really all I have." Bookmark here

"No family, no friends?" She asked. I responded with silence. Bookmark here

Eventually, the train stopped at Badland, Nevada. It was around midnight. I stepped off, with Atlas following. "You're not done?" I said while walking to the house. Bookmark here

"Of course not, Foolish Courier! We have so much to talk about!" Harper yells, with stars in her eyes. I rolled my own eyes as I reached the house. Ann, my client, was happy to see me. Bookmark here

"Did he..." She started with. Bookmark here

"Yes," I say, knowing what she was gonna say. "He loved it. And he loves you." Bookmark here

"T... Thank you!" Ann hugs me, crying. She smelled nice, like lavender. Ann paid me, I started wandering over to the hotel district. It was time to reward myself. Harper was also behind me. "So, what was that about, Foolish Courier?" Bookmark here

"Can't say. Also, since you're gonna tell the world my story, I'm not Foolish Courier." Bookmark here

"Ok," Harper nodded. "Then what's your name?" Bookmark here

"Call me Dopeman." Bookmark here
