Chapter 1:
Strayborn
"Get that black cat thief!" A human man bellowed at the top of his lungs as he chased after a speedy and agile black male cat with a piece of raw chicken breast clenched tightly between his teeth.
The male cat couldn't understand a word the human man was saying, but he could tell by the human's deep and irate tones that he was a danger to him. Likely because he had snuck into the man's kitchen and stole the raw meat, which had been laid out on a metal tray at a bench.
He felt the man's hurrying stomps on the footpath as vibrations to his paws. This made his sprints increase and become mad. So much so, he nearly crashed into oncoming human legs and street poles.
But his instincts were sharp and honed to certain dangers. So, he was able to zip, dash and dodge around obstacles in his path, then leap up to the top of a high fence and over it to reach the lower edge of a town house rooftop.
It was only after ambling over sections of rooftops to reach higher ground did he feel the human man was no longer chasing him.
Connor sighed with relief. Still with the chicken breast warming in his mouth, he continued a slower pace back to his family further out of the main cluster of buildings.
He didn't begin life as a stray cat, but he had learned fairly quickly after he had been coldly abandoned by his human family when he was a year old. He was soon cast into the stray cat life of wilderness and survival. Being a common cat with a full black coat and amber eyes, he was both scorned and shunned by most humans and stray cat gangs alike.
However, he was able to navigate the dangers and uncertainty of his surroundings to see his third year of life. And was even blessed to find a mate and have a family with her. Although, there was an increased stress toward keeping her and his kittens safe and well. Part of his stress was his more recent chicken meat stealing routine, which he had to ensure he wasn't hitting the same places twice. But one of the alley cats had said that chicken breast was best for mother cats and kittens. So he naturally had to get the best for his mate and litter. It was a risk he undertook every day. But one worth taking to ensure his family was fed well and growing strong.
