This is it

This is awkward, we didn't say a word since we got into the car. I should probably start a conversation.
" Do you think we should have searched more? We only found some canned food." I said.
" I do feel like we wasted both time and gas, but it will soon be nighttime., I don't want to risk it." Yuzuru replied.
" You know Sakuta will not be happy about this."
"I don't give a damn about him or his TV. We found canned food and it's nothing he can do about it. It's not like he is gonna leave the base himself"
"It's hopeless to think that he will understand."
"Did Mei check that flamethrower thing?" Yuzuru asked.
"A week ago I think"
"I hope we won't need to use it anyway."

The one I was talking to was Yuzuru, my friend, we were the ones that searched for anything useful outside the base.
After that little conversation, everything became quiet, I was only hearing the sound of the car moving on the road. But it wasn't silent for too long. I suddenly hear a rustling sound, it's coming from behind the car.
"Hey, Yuzuru, did you hear something?"
" It's probably the wind, but you can check if you want."
Since Yuzuru was driving the car I opened the window and looked outside. There was surely
something there but I wasn't sure what.
But in an instant I see something jumping in front of my eyes. "Argh!". After I recovered from the shock I started feeling a huge amount of pain. I look at my left arm and I see that it's covered in red.
" What happened!?" Yuzuru shouted.
"There was a thing there, and it bit me, It doesn't look so bad but it hurts like hell."
" What exactly was that thing?"
"I only saw a blue figure, look in the rearview mirror."
"What the fuck?" Yuzuru said with a scared tone.
"What do you see? It's a creature?"
"It's one I haven't seen before, it's like a wolf, but it's the size of a bear, and it has blue fur."
"Should we use the flamethrower?"
"Yes, go in the back and burn that bastard"
" My arm is injured, I don't think I can do it."
"I think driving the car will be more painful, just go already."
I had no other choice, I had to operate the flamethrower. If you could call it that. The flamethrower was a steel pipe connected to a gas tank. The steel pipe comes out of the car. We had to remove the backseats so that the gas tank will fit.
I turn the gas on, but I need to light it first. I pick up a match that was lying there but with my left hand injured I couldn't light it up.
"Do you have a lighter!?" I shout.
"Wait for a second!"
"I don't think we have one second!"
"Catch!" Shouts Yuzuru while throwing me the lighter.
I caught it, all I have to do now is light the gas.
A single contact with the gas and flames started bursting from the car.
I see the creature burning, it looks like it's slowing down. I turn the gas off and I returned to my seat.
"That was close." said Yuzuru with a relieved tone.
"It sure was, but could you drive faster, I think my injury is getting worst."
"Then tell the base we are getting close."
The so-called base was a school before the incident. We raised some wood walls on top of the steel walls the school already had, we also used the terrain around the school to plant vegetables in the spring, we even had some animals we kept behind the school. Being a rural area we were used to taking care of animals, excluding me, because my family didn't have animals, but I was trying to help around and learn.
"Hello, we are getting close."
"Alright, we will open the gates soon."
We talked with the help of a walkie-talkie. The gates were kinda big they needed some time to open them.
After another round of awkward silence, I see the school we all started calling home. We were students, from multiple villages, all living there.
We enter the schoolyard and I get out of the car. Then I see Sakura heading towards me. I knew Sakuta since first grade and he was always a person I hated, he gets fired up very easily, blames everyone except himself. The truth is that he does not waste his time, he takes care of most of the animals but that does not make him superior to us.
"Hey, did you bring me a TV like I asked you?" Said Sakuta.
" No, we only found some canned food out there." I replied
"You two are just useless, you waste gas and don't bring anything back!"
"Two days ago we got you a pile of CDs, you can't say we are useless." Replied Yuzuru.
I hate conflict so I need to stop this dispute before it escalates.
"Let's just go Yuzuru."
We both started heading towards the entrance of the school. I need to go to Akira, she might have some spare bandages.
I say goodbye to Yuzuru and make my way to Akira's room. I knock on the door.
"Come in"
I enter the room very carefully to make sure I don't paint something red.
"How did you even get this hurt?" Akira asked with a surprised tone.
"Long story, do you have some sort of bandages by chance?"
"I have, and just tell me what happened."
"A monster scratched me."
Her face shifted from worried to scared.
"Do you still think about the incident?" I asked.
"How could you forget something like that?" She replied.
"The incident..."
"Hiro!, Hiro!"
I open my eyes and see Akira in front of me, it looks like a huge earthquake happened. All the books fell from the bookshelf. A lot of kids call their parents but no one picks up.
"Holy shit!"
I look thru the window and see a bunch of strange creatures fighting over the dead bodies of what looks like our teachers. They looked like animals, but very strange. The teacher went to the convenience store because the class was almost over. But now their insides were splattered on the road. Monsters devouring them made me throw up immediately. The only good thing was that the monsters started to head away from the school. All the kids started to realize that their parents may have had the same fate as the teachers. We were left alone fearing for our life in a village full of monsters. I knew my mom was in that blood bath because she was a teacher but you could not recognize any person from that pile of organs. We are all hopeless. We are all weak.
