Chapter 3:
Echoes of Eden
The dim glow of the hideout illuminated Lena's anxious face as she paced back and forth, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “Kael, you can’t leave me here! I’m ready for this. I can help!”
Kael leaned against the wall, arms crossed, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “Lena, it’s too dangerous. I can’t risk you getting caught. The Ascended are out there, and if they find you…”
“But I’ve trained! I can fight! I’m not helpless!” She stepped closer, her voice rising in pitch, desperate and pleading.
“You’re not helpless,” Kael countered, his tone softening for a moment. “But you’re also not ready for what we’re about to face. You’d just be a liability.”
Her eyes burned with determination, but the flicker of fear beneath her bravado was unmistakable. “I’m tired of being left behind! I want to fight for something, to make a difference!”
Kael sighed, knowing all too well the frustration that simmered beneath her surface. “I understand, but your safety is my priority. If anything were to happen to you…” He hesitated, unable to voice the fear that gripped him.
“Fine,” Lena said, her voice barely above a whisper, defeat washing over her. “But promise me you’ll be careful.”
“I promise,” he replied, though doubt gnawed at him. The world outside was cruel, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that it was a promise he might not be able to keep.
As they stepped outside into the chilly night, the streets of the Veil whispered secrets only the shadows understood. Kael took a deep breath, trying to shake off the weight of his decision as they moved silently through the narrow alleys, Mira flanking him with an air of quiet confidence.
The path ahead was dark, but the stars above glimmered like distant memories of hope. Kael glanced sideways at Mira, curiosity bubbling in his chest. “So, how do you know so much about the Eden Protocol? What’s your real goal?”
Mira’s expression shifted slightly, the weight of the question settling between them. “The Ascended kept the Protocol shrouded in secrecy, but I’ve always had a knack for digging up the truth. I’ve hacked their systems, sneaked into places I shouldn’t have been. It’s not just about the Protocol itself, Kael; it’s what it represents.”
“What does it represent?” he pressed, genuinely intrigued.
“Control. Power. The Ascended have twisted it to suit their needs. They believe they’re above everyone else, that they’re the only ones who can manage the Earth’s resources. But I know there’s more to it.” She paused, the intensity in her gaze sparking a flicker of admiration in him. “It’s about restoring balance to a world that’s been thrown off-kilter.”
Kael nodded slowly, absorbing her words. “And you think the Eden Protocol is the key to that?”
“Absolutely,” Mira replied, a hint of smugness creeping into her voice. “I’ve already started to piece together the fragments of what it can do. If we can activate it the right way, we can give the power back to the people instead of keeping it locked away by the Ascended.”
The conviction in her words struck a chord within him, igniting a shared desire for change. But before he could respond, they turned a corner, and Kael froze, heart sinking as the sight ahead became clear.
A small squad of Ascended guards stood before them, their uniforms stark against the dark alleyway. The insignia they bore—a white dove encircled by a twisted branch—gleamed under the flickering streetlights, an ironic symbol of peace that belied the violence they were capable of.
“Damn,” Kael breathed, instinctively pulling Mira back into the shadows. “What are they doing here?”
Mira’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the scene. “Looks like they’re searching for something. We need to be careful; they can’t see us.”
Kael swallowed hard, his heart racing. “This wasn’t part of the plan. We have to find another way.”
Mira nodded, her expression resolute. “I’ve been preparing for this. If we’re quick and quiet, we can slip past them.”
As they edged closer to the building, the comms station loomed ahead, its once-bustling façade now a shell of neglect. Kael felt the tension in the air, a taut string ready to snap at any moment.
“What if we’re seen?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
“We won’t be. Just follow my lead,” Mira said, her confidence radiating. She glanced at the guards, noting their focus on the building rather than the surrounding area.
With a nod, they moved forward, careful to keep to the shadows. As they neared the entrance, Kael felt the weight of the moment pressing down on him. This was it—their chance to retrieve the first fragment of the Eden Protocol.
Inside the building, the air was stale and heavy, thick with dust and echoes of a past long forgotten. Mira pulled out a small device, its screen glowing with a faint blue light, and began to work on overriding the old security systems.
“Just give me a moment,” she said, her fingers flying across the device’s interface.
Kael glanced around, the quiet broken only by the sounds of Mira’s typing. The remnants of old equipment surrounded them, and he wondered how many had once passed through this station, unaware of the power that now lay within its walls.
“What do you think we’ll find in here?” he asked, trying to distract himself from the creeping anxiety.
“Something that can change everything,” she replied, her eyes alight with determination. “But we need to be ready for anything. The Ascended won’t go down without a fight.”
Before he could respond, the device let out a quiet beep. Mira’s expression shifted, excitement mingling with a hint of worry. “Got it! The cameras are down, at least temporarily. We have a small window.”
Kael looked at her with bewilderment, "You can just do that.. ?". In return she just smirked at him and shrugged, "Perks of having access to Ascended tech."
“Let’s go then,” Kael urged, stepping forward, but Mira held up a hand, her brow furrowed in concentration.
“Wait. We need to be careful. There might still be traps or alarms inside.”
Kael nodded, every instinct telling him to be cautious. They crept into the main room, their footsteps muffled by the thick layer of dust on the floor.
As they moved deeper into the building, Kael felt a growing sense of urgency. The tension hung in the air like a storm cloud, and every creak of the floorboards sent his heart racing.
“What’s our next move?” he asked, glancing at Mira as they reached a doorway marked with faded signs.
“We need to find the control room. That’s where the mainframe for the Protocol should be,” she replied, scanning the area for any signs of movement.
“Then let’s hurry,” he said, the adrenaline pushing him forward.
As they navigated through the darkened halls, Kael’s mind raced with possibilities. What would they find? Would they be able to activate the fragment?
Mira’s determination was infectious, and for the first time in a long while, he felt a glimmer of hope. But that hope was tempered by the knowledge that danger lurked just beyond their sight, waiting to strike at any moment.
As they pressed on, the shadows deepened around them, and Kael couldn’t shake the feeling that their journey had only just begun. Whatever awaited them in the depths of the comms station, they were prepared to face it—together.
