As Anara exited the Neurix building, a light rain began to fall, adding to the city’s already gray atmosphere. The drizzling rain blurred her surroundings, but she didn’t slow down. Her heart was filled with anxiety yet also with a newfound determination. Drayton had given her a warning, but it only intensified her curiosity.
Inside her bag, the small chip felt unusually heavy. She knew she couldn’t just access its contents; Neurix’s systems were so advanced that any suspicious activity would immediately be detected. But there was one person who might be able to help Jess. Anara knew Jess had the access and skill to hack through security systems, though it was risky. They’d worked together on a project before, and Jess, too, had reasons to distrust Neurix.
A few hours later, Anara arrived at a small café hidden in the city’s outskirts. This was their agreed-upon safe meeting point. Jess was already there, wearing a black jacket with a hood partially covering her face.
“Anara,” Jess whispered, looking at her seriously. “Are you sure about this?”
Anara nodded. “I have to know what happened to my father. This chip… Drayton said it’s the key to unlocking everything.”
Jess was silent for a moment before letting out a deep sigh. “This is dangerous. If Neurix finds out, we’ll be hunted down. But… I understand why you need to do this.”
Jess pulled out a small laptop from her bag, and within minutes, they began the process of scanning the chip. A green light flickered on the screen as data slowly loaded, revealing hidden information. Anara’s heart pounded. All the answers might be here.
But suddenly, Jess’s laptop displayed a warning message.
“Your device is being monitored.”
Jess cursed under her breath, her expression tense. “They’ve found us! They’re tracking us!”
Anara felt panic rising, but before she could react, Jess grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the café. They ran down narrow alleyways, trying to avoid the city’s extensive surveillance network. In the silence of the night, their footsteps echoed, racing against the tension that surrounded them.
Finally, they reached an old abandoned building. Jess quickly closed the door behind them while Anara tried to catch her breath. In this temporary hiding place, they both realized the gravity of their situation. Neurix was aware of their every move.
“There’s something on this chip,” Anara said, looking at Jess meaningfully. “Otherwise, they wouldn’t have come after us so quickly.”
Jess nodded in agreement. “We need to find another way to access this chip without their systems knowing. If Drayton is right, this chip contains information that could explain everything.”
Inside the old building, they carefully continued their efforts. Within minutes, Jess managed to access part of the files on the chip. Several documents began to appear, showing research notes, diagrams, and… a name that Anara recognized.
Project Orion.
Anara felt her heart skip a beat. Her father had mentioned the project once, but so cautiously that she felt just mentioning it could trigger a disaster. Project Orion was one of Neurix’s most classified projects, a technological experiment considered so dangerous it had been kept from public view.
“This is it…” Jess whispered in awe and fear. “This is proof your father was involved in something massive. Project Orion… a technology never revealed to the public. This technology could… change everything.”
Anara looked at Jess seriously. “What do you mean?”
“This is technology that can influence human thought, controlling decisions without people even realizing it. Imagine if Neurix used it on everyone.”
Anara was stunned. If this technology existed and Neurix controlled it, then the entire city, maybe even the entire world, was at their mercy. That’s why her father had disappeared. He must have been trying to protect this secret or maybe he’d tried to stop Neurix.
Before they could process any further, the sound of footsteps echoed outside. Jess immediately shut off the laptop, and they hid in a corner of the room, trying not to be detected. The moments dragged on, and the footsteps grew closer, intensifying the tension.
Finally, the sound faded, and silence returned.
“We have to leave,” Jess whispered. “This is too dangerous. They already know we’re here.”
Anara nodded, though inside, she knew her journey to uncover the truth had only just begun. She was already too deeply involved, and turning back was no longer an option. Whatever happened, she had to find out the real reason behind her father’s disappearance and the secrets of Project Orion.
Moving carefully, they exited the building and disappeared into the dark night, while Neurix’s shadow loomed, pursuing them with every step they took.
