Chapter 7:

Shadow’s Bargain

The Dream Crafter

The temple’s haunting silence surrounded me as Sable’s offer hung in the air. His gaze pierced me, filled with something akin to kinship but laced with cold calculation. I could sense the depth of his conviction—a determination forged in the fires of his own despair. But as tempting as it was to think about the power he offered, I couldn’t ignore the darkness in his words, the corruption simmering within him.

Raelle’s warning echoed in my mind. Power isn’t just a gift—it’s a burden, a responsibility that can destroy the one who wields it. Yet here was Sable, urging me to abandon caution and embrace it recklessly, to tear down every boundary in pursuit of what he wanted most.

“Elliot,” Sable said, his voice low and almost soothing. “I see your hesitation, but we are alike. You understand the potential of the Dreamscape, the possibilities if we unlock its full power. You don’t have to follow Raelle’s narrow-minded path.” His gaze sharpened. “Think about it—the ability to create, to shape reality as you desire. Isn’t that why you came here?”

I swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words. A part of me did crave that power, that freedom. But there was something too intense, too consuming about Sable’s need for control. And I realized that he hadn’t just lost someone; he’d lost himself.

“No,” I said quietly, but firmly. “I won’t let the Dreamscape become a tool for destruction. I won’t follow you down this path, Sable.”

A flicker of frustration crossed his face, and his gentle demeanor twisted into something darker. “You think you’re different? You think you’re stronger than I was?” His voice hardened. “Fine. But remember this moment, Elliot—when everything you care about slips through your fingers, and you realize that power was the only thing that could have saved you.”

Suddenly, he raised his hand, and the shadows around us thickened, coiling like serpents. The air grew heavy, crackling with dark energy. I felt the ground shift beneath my feet as the clearing darkened, the temple’s walls casting elongated shadows that seemed to breathe.

Raelle’s voice cut through the tension. “Elliot, get back!” she shouted, her hands glowing with vibrant light as she summoned her own power.

Sable’s gaze snapped to her, a smirk playing on his lips. “Ah, Raelle, still so righteous. But you can’t protect him forever.” With a flick of his wrist, the shadows surged toward us, swirling in a chaotic dance that seemed to defy reality itself.

Raelle threw up a shield of light, but I could see the strain in her face, the intensity of Sable’s assault pressing down on her. “Stay behind me!” she shouted, her voice taut with effort.

I gritted my teeth, feeling helpless as the shadows closed in. I had power, too—I could feel it inside me, pulsing with each beat of my heart. But it was raw, untamed, and I didn’t know how to wield it.

Sable advanced, his face twisted with an eerie calm, as though he was savoring this moment. “You could have joined me, Elliot. We could have been unstoppable. But if you won’t stand by my side…” He raised his hand, the shadows coalescing into a massive, dark blade. “…then you’ll fall before me.”

The blade slashed toward us, slicing through Raelle’s shield as though it were paper. She cried out, stumbling back, and I felt a surge of anger—an anger so fierce it overwhelmed my fear.

Something snapped inside me, a well of power I didn’t know I had. The world blurred, colors shifting as I extended my hand instinctively. A blast of energy erupted from my palm, colliding with Sable’s shadow blade in a brilliant clash of light and dark.

Sable staggered, his eyes widening in surprise. “Interesting…” he murmured, a twisted smile forming on his lips. “So you’ve finally tapped into it. Good. But it won’t be enough.”

He lunged forward, his movements quick as lightning, and I barely had time to react. Raelle pulled me back, her grip firm. “Elliot, listen to me,” she said, her voice urgent. “You can’t face him alone. His power comes from his connection to the Dreamscape’s darkest parts—the longer we stay, the more he’ll draw from it.”

“But if we leave, he’ll come after us,” I argued, desperation clawing at me. “He won’t stop until he has what he wants.”

Raelle’s gaze hardened a flicker of something painful in her eyes. “Then we’ll have to break his connection to the Dreamscape. Sever his power at the source.”

Before I could question her plan, Raelle turned and sprinted toward the heart of the temple, where the Primal energy pulsed. The air grew colder as we neared the central chamber, the ancient symbols on the walls glowing brighter with each step.

Sable’s laughter echoed behind us. “Running away, Raelle? How unlike you!” He pursued us with a relentless pace, his form merging with the shadows, as if he were one with the darkness itself.

We burst into the temple’s core, a vast chamber filled with swirling energy, the very essence of the Dreamscape. The walls pulsed in rhythm with my heartbeat, and I could feel the power within, raw and ancient.

Raelle’s voice was steady, but there was a hint of desperation. “Elliot, listen carefully. We’re going to overload the Primal energy—it’ll disrupt Sable’s connection, but it’s dangerous. If we lose control…”

Her voice trailed off, but I understood. The risk was enormous, but it was our only chance.

I nodded, stepping forward. I could feel the energy reaching out to me, responding to my touch. Sable appeared in the doorway, his eyes narrowing as he realized what we were attempting.

“Stop!” he roared, his voice filled with fury. “You have no idea what you’re meddling with!”

But it was too late. Raelle and I extended our hands, channeling our combined power into the Primal energy. The chamber shuddered, a blinding light filling the space as the energy surged, spilling out of control.

Sable screamed, his connection to the Dreamscape severing as the energy backlash struck him. His form flickered, momentarily revealing the man beneath the darkness—a man haunted by loss, twisted by grief.

But the backlash was too powerful. The energy spiraled out of control, the chamber collapsing around us as reality itself seemed to fracture.

In the chaos, I felt Raelle’s hand grab mine, her voice barely audible. “Hold on, Elliot… just hold on…”

And then everything went black.
