Chapter 7:

The Sacrifice

Genesis

The dim light cast an eerie glow down the narrow alley as Jun shoved Maya against the cold brick wall, his grip firm on her shoulders. His breaths were ragged, his chest heaving, the tension in his body barely restrained.

Maya laughed, a cold, mocking sound that reverberated through the alley. She spat blood to the side, her lips curling into a taunting smirk. Her sharp eyes glinted with something dangerous—playful yet calculating.

“Didn’t think you could feel this strongly, Jun,” she said, her voice dripping with derision. She tilted her head, studying him with amusement. “I thought you were all about control. But look at you now. You’re slipping.”

His fingers dug into her shoulders, his anger simmering just beneath the surface. “Stay the hell away from Yuki,” he growled, his voice low and threatening. “He has nothing to do with this, Maya. Don’t drag him into your games.”

Her smirk widened, a dark, knowing look crossing her face. “Oh, so now you care? Funny, isn’t it? I didn’t take you for the sentimental type, Jun.” She leaned forward slightly, her voice softening into a mock whisper. “You’re protecting him, aren’t you? But for how long?”

“Don’t.” His tone was a warning, sharp and final. “Yuki’s not like us, Maya. He doesn’t deserve this. He doesn’t need to know about—”

“About what?” she interrupted, her laughter cutting through the air. “The truth? His place in all of this?” She raised an eyebrow, her smile fading slightly. “You’re so naive, Jun. You think you can protect him? From me? From them?”

Her bruises began to fade as she spoke, the blood on her lips vanishing as her skin knit itself back together in seconds. Jun watched, his grip loosening in stunned frustration, as the evidence of their struggle disappeared.

Before he could react, her form flickered, and she was gone.

“Maya!” he roared, spinning around, his eyes darting through the shadows. His voice echoed off the walls, frustration mounting. “Don’t pull this crap with me! Show yourself!”

A low chuckle sounded behind him, sending a chill down his spine. He turned to see her standing a few feet away, arms crossed, her smirk firmly back in place.

“Oh, Jun,” she said, shaking her head. “What happened to loyalty? To our fight against them—those modified bastards?”

Her words hit like a slap. Jun’s shoulders slumped, and his fists unclenched as he leaned back against the wall, the fight momentarily draining from him. He avoided her gaze, his voice quiet. “Yuki’s… different,” he muttered. “He doesn’t deserve this. He’s done nothing to us. Just leave him out of it.”

Maya tilted her head, her smirk softening into something colder. “You think you can keep him out of it? That’s cute.”

Her tone was light, almost teasing, but the weight of her words settled heavily in the air. Jun felt his anger surge again, his hands curling into fists. He was about to step toward her when something small and metallic clattered to the ground between them.

A USB drive.

Jun froze, his eyes snapping to the device. He glanced back at Maya, whose smirk had disappeared, replaced by a detached, calculating expression.

“What is this?” he asked, his voice tense.

“See for yourself,” she replied coolly, her arms still crossed.

Jun bent down slowly, his hands trembling as he picked up the drive. With a hesitant tap, he activated it.

Holographic screens flickered to life, their pale blue glow illuminating the walls and Maya’s face. Lines of text and files scrolled before him, each more damning than the last. His breath hitched as he read through them, his stomach twisting into knots.

One file stood out, its name stark and bold: Project: The Restorer.

Jun’s eyes locked on the name at the top of the document: Yuki Ito.

His friend. His gentle, unassuming friend. The one person he’d vowed to protect. And here he was, at the center of something far beyond anything Jun could have imagined.

His hands shook as he scrolled further, the text blurring as his mind tried to make sense of what he was reading. Yuki’s genetic profile. The modifications implanted in him. The purpose for which he was supposedly created.

Jun’s breath came in short, shallow bursts as the USB slipped from his fingers, clattering to the ground. “You’re… you’re joking,” he whispered, his voice barely audible.

Maya’s gaze didn’t waver. She stepped closer, her expression hard. “It’s him, Jun. The Sacrifice. The one I told you about.”

Jun shook his head, the words feeling like a blow to his chest. “No. That can’t be. Yuki’s… he’s not supposed to be—”

“It’s him,” she repeated, her voice firm. “The one who will finally bring balance. The one who can end all of this.”

Jun staggered back, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him. His mind reeled with the implications. Yuki? The Sacrifice? The one who was supposed to bridge the gap between the modified and the unmodified?

Maya’s voice cut through his spiraling thoughts. “You need to let go of your attachment to him, Jun. He’s not just your friend anymore. He’s a tool. A means to an end.”

Her words were cold, unfeeling, and they made Jun’s stomach churn. He looked up at her, his voice trembling with barely restrained rage. “So this is what all of it was for? The research, the plans, the waiting? To use him?”

Maya’s expression didn’t soften. If anything, it hardened. “He’s the answer, Jun. The one who will bring equality. But yes—if it means his sacrifice, then so be it. That’s how this ends.”

Jun felt the world tilt, his breath catching in his throat. His best friend, the one person he thought he could protect from the cruelty of their world, was now at the center of its darkest truths.

As Maya turned to leave, she glanced back at him, her voice low and commanding. “You know what you have to do, Jun. When the time comes… be ready.”

And with that, she disappeared into the shadows, leaving Jun alone in the alley.

The weight of her words pressed down on him, suffocating. The Sacrifice. Yuki. His friend, his brother in all but blood, was destined to be the sacrifice for a cause Jun wasn’t sure he believed in anymore.

His hands trembled as he leaned back against the wall, staring blankly at the holographic screens still glowing faintly in the darkness. Yuki’s name stared back at him, a reminder of the impossible decision that loomed ahead.

Jun clenched his fists, his teeth grinding together as a wave of anguish and fury surged through him.

Yuki. What was he supposed to do now?
