Chapter 13:
The Pale Ones
The sun climbed higher as Nate, Bella, and Finn pressed onward, the quiet determination on their faces evidence of all they had survived together. The landscape shifted as they moved, from dense woods to fields dotted with the skeletal remains of old buildings and abandoned machinery. Ahead lay the ruins of what appeared to have been a small town — collapsed roofs, walls streaked with soot, and the silence that only comes from long-forgotten places.
“We could find supplies here,” Bella murmured, her gaze scanning the desolate structures. “Or at least a place to rest for a bit.”
Nate nodded, his hand instinctively moving to his knife. “We’ll stay alert. No telling what’s in these ruins.”
They entered the outskirts of the town, moving in tight formation. Finn hung back, his eyes darting between the buildings, clearly unnerved. But they pushed forward, navigating the cracked pavement and weaving through the remnants of abandoned vehicles.
As they reached the center of town, Nate noticed something odd — faint marks on the ground, like tracks that hadn’t yet been erased by time. “Someone’s been here recently,” he whispered, motioning to the marks.
Bella crouched down, her hand brushing against the faint tracks. “These are fresh. We’re not alone.”
A sudden noise echoed from one of the nearby buildings — a sharp clang, like metal striking stone. They froze, exchanging tense glances. Nate gestured for them to stay low and moved toward the sound, his footsteps silent, his knife ready.
As they approached the source of the noise, they saw a small group of people huddled around a fire in what had once been a mechanic’s garage. They looked rough but not hostile, their clothes worn and patched, weapons resting within easy reach.
Nate studied them, weighing the risk. They hadn’t noticed him yet, and he motioned for Bella and Finn to stay hidden. But before he could decide on a course of action, Bella stepped forward, her voice soft but steady.
“Hello,” she called out, her tone cautious but open. “We’re just passing through.”
The group turned, surprise flashing across their faces. The man nearest to the fire rose, his gaze wary but not unfriendly. “Not many come around here,” he said, his voice rough with disuse.
Nate stepped forward, staying beside Bella. “We’re looking for supplies, and a safe place to rest. If you’d rather be left alone, we’ll move on.”
The man studied them for a long moment, then gave a slow nod. “It’s rare to see strangers who don’t bring trouble. We could use the company — and a little extra help. Name’s Jonas.”
Nate and Bella exchanged glances, then nodded. “Nate,” he said, gesturing to Bella. “This is Bella. And Finn.” Finn gave a slight nod from behind them, his eyes still wary.
The small group relaxed slightly, allowing them to sit around the fire. As they settled in, they learned that Jonas’s group had been holding out in the town for months, living off scraps and scavenging whatever they could find in the surrounding area. It was a precarious existence, but they’d managed to carve out a fragile life here.
As they talked, Jonas glanced at Nate, a hint of unease in his expression. “There’s something you should know, if you’re planning on sticking around tonight.”
Nate raised an eyebrow. “What is it?”
Jonas took a breath, his gaze shifting to the darkening sky. “The Pale Ones don’t come around here during the day, but at night… it’s different. They’ve been gathering around this town after dark. We don’t know why, but they come in groups. Always at night, always circling the town.”
Finn paled, his face filled with dread. “And you just… stay here? Knowing they’re out there?”
Jonas’s expression hardened. “We’ve learned to survive, to keep quiet and stay hidden. But it gets harder every night. Their numbers keep growing, and it’s only a matter of time before we’re overrun.”
Bella looked at Nate, her voice calm but resolute. “Maybe we can help.”
Jonas shook his head, a wry smile tugging at his lips. “You’re brave, but I’m not sure how much help we’ll be. Still, if you’re willing to fight, you’d be welcome to stay.”
Nate nodded, a fierce determination in his eyes. “We’ve made it through worse. We’ll face this, together.”
As night fell, they gathered weapons and barricaded the entrances to the garage, each of them readying for the worst. The air was tense, thick with anticipation and fear. Nate checked their supplies, making sure everyone had enough to defend themselves.
Bella joined him, her face pale but resolute. “We’ve survived everything so far. We can get through this.”
Nate met her gaze, his expression softening. “I know. And I’ll be right beside you.”
They took their positions near the windows, each of them watching the shadows stretch across the town as the sun dipped below the horizon. Finn sat nearby, clutching his weapon tightly, his eyes filled with a quiet resolve.
The minutes ticked by in silence, each sound magnified in the darkness. Then, slowly, a low growl echoed from the outskirts of town. Nate felt his muscles tense as he saw the first Pale One appear in the moonlight, its hollow eyes fixed on the garage.
As if summoned by an unseen force, more Pale Ones emerged from the shadows, forming a loose ring around the town. Jonas and his group exchanged nervous glances, their weapons at the ready. The creatures moved slowly, circling the perimeter, their guttural moans filling the air.
Nate tightened his grip on his knife, his gaze steady. “Stay calm. We hold our ground, and we don’t make a sound unless we have to.”
The Pale Ones shuffled closer, their movements unhurried but relentless. One of them neared the barricade, its bony hand reaching out to claw at the wooden boards. Bella tensed beside Nate, her breath barely audible.
For a long, tense moment, the Pale Ones continued to press forward, their numbers swelling until the town was surrounded. Jonas signaled for everyone to hold their position, his face grim but resolute.
Then, with a sudden burst of motion, one of the Pale Ones lunged at the barricade, tearing at the wood. The others followed, their eyes empty but their movements desperate, driven by some unrelenting force.
“Hold the line!” Nate shouted, raising his weapon as the creatures closed in. Bella stood beside him, her gaze fierce as she fought off the nearest Pale One, her movements swift and precise.
The creatures pushed harder, and the barricade began to give way under the onslaught. Nate fought with everything he had, his strikes deadly, his determination unwavering. He glanced at Bella, seeing the same resolve in her eyes, a fire that kept him going.
One by one, the Pale Ones fell, their bodies collapsing in the dirt. But for every one they killed, two more seemed to take its place, their numbers overwhelming.
As the battle raged on, Jonas moved to the front, his weapon in hand, his face etched with grim determination. “I’ll draw them away. Buy you time to escape.”
Nate shook his head, his voice firm. “We’re not leaving you.”
Jonas gave a faint smile, his gaze filled with a resigned acceptance. “I’ve been holding on for too long. If this is my chance to make a difference, then I’ll take it.”
Before Nate could protest, Jonas broke from the barricade, charging toward the Pale Ones with a shout, his weapon swinging. The creatures turned, drawn by the sudden movement, their empty eyes locking onto him as he led them away from the garage.
Bella watched, her face filled with sorrow. “He didn’t have to do that…”
Nate placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice quiet. “He made his choice. Let’s honor it by surviving.”
They took advantage of the opening Jonas had created, slipping through the weakened barricade and making their way through the maze of buildings, the sounds of the battle fading behind them.
As the first light of dawn broke over the ruins, they stopped to catch their breath, the events of the night weighing heavily on them. Finn leaned against a wall, his face pale but grateful. “I thought… I thought we were done for.”
Bella looked back at the town, her expression a mixture of sadness and resolve. “Jonas didn’t survive, but he gave us a chance. We owe it to him to keep going.”
Nate nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. “We’ve lost too much to turn back now. We’ll keep moving, and we’ll find something better.”
They set off again, their steps steady, their hearts heavy but resolute. The night had taken another ally, but it had also strengthened their bond, reminding them of the courage it took to survive and the sacrifice that sometimes came with it.
