Chapter 21:

Chapter 21: The Ravine

The Pale Ones

The path grew narrower as Nate, Bella, and Finn moved forward, the vast landscape now giving way to a rugged, rocky terrain filled with sharp cliffs and deep valleys. The light had taken on a dull hue, filtered through an overcast sky that gave everything a muted, gray tint. A strange quiet settled over the area, each of their footsteps amplified by the stillness that surrounded them.

They stopped at the edge of a wide ravine, its steep walls plunging down into darkness. The opposite side was barely visible through a light mist that lingered over the chasm. The trail they had been following led directly to the edge, abruptly ending at the top of the cliff. The only way across was a series of old, weathered planks laid out like a bridge, stretched precariously from one side to the other.

Bella’s eyes narrowed as she surveyed the makeshift bridge. “That… doesn’t look stable.”

Finn let out a low whistle, eyeing the planks warily. “Whoever made that must have had a death wish. It barely looks wide enough for one of us.”

Nate stepped forward, testing the first plank with his foot. It creaked ominously, but held his weight. “It’s risky, but we can’t go back now. Crossing is our only option.”

Bella studied the ravine, her face set with determination. “If we go one at a time, carefully, we can make it across. I’ll follow right behind you.”

Nate nodded, appreciating her steady resolve. “Alright. Finn, you’ll go after Bella. Let’s take it slow and keep our balance.”

Nate took the lead, his movements careful and deliberate as he tested each plank before placing his full weight on it. The boards groaned beneath him, but they held, their aged wood bending slightly underfoot. He kept his focus on the opposite edge of the ravine, determined to make it across without looking down.

Bella followed, her steps mirroring his, her every movement cautious. The wind picked up slightly, sending a chill through the air and causing the planks to sway. Finn’s breathing grew heavier as he stepped onto the bridge, his gaze fixed ahead, but his discomfort was clear.

Halfway across, the wind intensified, whipping around them with a force that threatened to destabilize the bridge. Nate paused, gripping a plank tightly, and looked back at Bella. “Hold on!”

They crouched low, each of them pressing down to keep the bridge steady. The wind howled, the sound echoing off the walls of the ravine, filling the air with a haunting resonance that amplified every creak and groan of the wood.

Finn swallowed, his voice a tense whisper. “I don’t like this… I really don’t like this.”

Nate met his gaze, his tone firm. “Stay focused. We’re almost there.”

The wind died down slightly, and they continued forward, each step bringing them closer to the other side. But just as Nate reached the last few planks, a sharp crack sounded beneath him. He barely had time to react as one of the boards gave way, splintering underfoot and dropping into the ravine.

Nate’s balance wavered, his arms flailing as he tried to catch himself. Bella’s hand shot out, grabbing his wrist and steadying him, her grip strong and unyielding. Their eyes met, and for a moment, the danger around them faded, replaced by a shared understanding — an unspoken promise to never let go.

“Thanks,” he whispered, his voice rough.

Bella nodded, her face pale but determined. “Let’s keep going.”

With Bella’s support, Nate regained his footing, carefully stepping over the gap and onto the last few planks. He moved onto solid ground, then turned, extending a hand to help Bella across the final stretch. She took it, her fingers curling around his as she stepped onto the other side.

Finn was next, his steps shaky as he navigated the broken plank. Nate and Bella both reached out, grabbing his arms and pulling him to safety just as the wind picked up again, sending another gust through the ravine.

Once all three of them were across, they collapsed onto the rocky ground, their breaths heavy with relief. The bridge swayed behind them, its remaining planks rattling in the wind, a reminder of the danger they had just narrowly escaped.

After a moment of catching their breath, they stood and surveyed their surroundings. The ravine continued along a narrow path carved into the cliffside, the walls of the canyon rising up on either side like towering sentinels. As they moved deeper into the ravine, an unsettling sensation began to settle over them, an almost tangible tension in the air.

Bella paused, her gaze narrowing as she listened. “Do you hear that?”

Nate stopped, straining his ears. At first, there was only silence, but then a faint sound drifted through the ravine — whispers, soft and indistinct, echoing off the stone walls.

Finn’s face paled. “That… doesn’t sound right.”

Nate’s expression grew wary as he tried to pinpoint the source of the whispers, but they seemed to come from all directions, swirling around them in an eerie, disembodied chorus. The sound was neither human nor animal, a haunting mix of voices that seemed to carry the weight of something long forgotten.

“Stay close,” he said, his voice low but steady. “Whatever this is, we don’t want to be separated.”

They pressed onward, the whispers growing louder, filling the air with a strange resonance that made the walls seem to shift and move. Each step felt heavier, as if the very ground was pulling them down, urging them to stop, to turn back.

Bella’s gaze was intense as she moved beside Nate, her voice barely more than a whisper. “It’s like the walls themselves are alive.”

Nate nodded, his jaw clenched. “We need to keep moving. Don’t let the sounds distract you.”

The path grew narrower as they went deeper into the ravine, the walls pressing in on either side, the whispers intensifying until they felt like they were inside a living, breathing creature. Shadows danced along the rocks, flickering in and out of sight, making it difficult to tell where the path ended and the walls began.

Finn’s breathing grew shallow, his steps faltering as he glanced around with wide eyes. “I don’t… I don’t know if I can keep going.”

Bella turned to him, her voice firm but gentle. “Finn, look at me. We’re almost through this. Just stay focused on us. We’re here with you.”

He took a shaky breath, nodding, and steadied himself. With Bella’s reassurance, he continued, his steps matching theirs as they moved forward, the whispers gradually fading until they were once again surrounded by silence.

After what felt like hours, they finally emerged from the ravine, stepping into an open field bathed in sunlight. The tension that had weighed on them lifted, replaced by a sense of relief and calm. They stopped, each of them taking a moment to absorb the quiet, the whispers now a distant memory.

Bella glanced at Nate, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “Looks like we made it through another one.”

Nate returned her smile, a rare warmth in his eyes. “We did. And we’ll keep doing it, as long as we stay together.”

Finn let out a breath of relief, a grin breaking through his exhausted expression. “Alright, that was terrifying, but we got through it. Let’s hope the next stretch is a little less… haunted.”

They shared a quiet laugh, the tension finally breaking as they regrouped, their steps lighter as they set off into the open field. The experience in the ravine had shaken them, but it had also strengthened their resolve, each of them more certain than ever that they could face whatever came next.

As they continued, Bella walked beside Nate, her gaze steady as she spoke softly. “Thank you… for not letting go back there.”

He looked at her, his expression sincere. “I won’t let go. Not now, not ever.”
