Chapter 5:

Chapter 6: Shadows of Forgotten Lives

Veilborn: Awakening

The dim light of dawn barely touched the docks when Ithan, Kaelan, and Seraphine arrived. A chill clung to the air, and an unsettling silence blanketed the area. Ithan could feel the Sigil pulsing within him, more intensely than ever, as if resonating with the darkness around them.

“There,” Kaelan whispered, pointing to a spot by the water’s edge. A twisted shadow hung in the air, flickering like a mirage.

Seraphine closed her eyes, reaching out toward the distortion. “This echo is powerful, and it’s tethered to something deep within the Veil.”

Ithan’s pulse quickened as he approached the shadowy distortion. The air grew thicker, pressing down on him with an invisible weight. Memories flashed before his eyes—not his own, but visions of an ancient city, burning and crumbling, a world lost to the Hollow King’s wrath.

“These are… memories?” he asked, barely able to breathe.

Seraphine nodded. “Yes. When a distortion becomes powerful enough, it can manifest echoes of past worlds consumed by the Hollow King. It’s a warning… and a threat.”

The echo seemed to sense their presence, twisting and contorting into a monstrous form. Its face was obscured, but its eyes burned with an eerie, unnatural light, its gaze locked onto Ithan.

“This is no ordinary distortion,” Kaelan muttered, drawing his weapon. “Prepare yourself.”

As the creature lunged, Ithan instinctively raised his hand, the Sigil flaring to life. A beam of light shot forward, striking the creature and pushing it back. But unlike the other distortions, this one didn’t disintegrate—it absorbed the energy, growing larger and more menacing.

“It’s feeding on the Sigil’s power!” Ithan gasped, panic rising in his chest.

Seraphine stepped forward, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t let it control you. The Sigil is part of you, but you control it. Remember what you’ve learned—focus.”

Taking a deep breath, Ithan closed his eyes, tuning out the creature’s haunting growls. He reached within, centering his mind, drawing on the Sigil not as a weapon, but as an extension of himself. He could feel the creature’s energy, its twisted connection to the Veil, and with Seraphine’s guidance, he turned that energy against it.

The creature staggered, its form wavering. Ithan opened his eyes, his voice steady. “You don’t belong here. Return to the shadows.”

The Sigil glowed fiercely, a blinding light engulfing the creature as it howled, its form unraveling until only darkness remained, dissipating into the mist.

Kaelan exhaled, visibly relieved. “Impressive. You’re learning faster than I expected.”

Ithan shook his head, the experience leaving him shaken. “But this was just one echo. There are countless others out there, aren’t there?”

Seraphine nodded, her face grave. “Yes. And each one brings the Hollow King closer to our world. But with every distortion you eliminate, you’re one step closer to breaking his hold on this reality.”

A figure appeared in the distance, silhouetted against the rising sun. It was Raelle, striding toward them with her usual determined expression, but there was a tension in her eyes.

“We have a problem,” she said without preamble. “Another echo has been detected—this time in the heart of the city. And it’s affecting people.”

Ithan’s chest tightened. “Affecting them how?”

Raelle’s gaze darkened. “The echo is warping their minds, filling them with rage, fear, despair. It’s driving them to violence, attacking each other as if possessed.”

Kaelan cursed under his breath. “If it’s reached that level, the Hollow King’s influence is far stronger than we thought.”

Seraphine placed a steadying hand on Ithan’s arm. “This will be a true test of your control, Ithan. These echoes are getting closer to the heart of the city—and to the heart of the Veil. If we don’t act swiftly, the entire city will fall under his shadow.”

Ithan nodded, his determination solidifying. “Then let’s move. I’m ready.”

As they made their way back through the docks toward the city, Ithan couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. The shadows seemed to cling to him, whispering his name in voices too soft to fully hear. He glanced at Seraphine, who was watching him closely, her expression unreadable.

“The Sigil changes you,” she said quietly. “It pulls you closer to the Veil. Be careful not to let it consume you.”

Ithan swallowed, feeling the weight of her words. He knew that the Sigil was a double-edged sword—a power that could save his world, but one that could easily drag him into darkness if he wasn’t careful.

They reached the city’s main square, where people were gathered, their eyes glazed over, their faces contorted with fear and anger. Ithan felt the Sigil react, buzzing with an intensity he hadn’t felt before.

“Stay focused,” Kaelan warned, his gaze flicking over the crowd. “They’re under the Hollow King’s influence, but they’re still people. If we can dispel the echo, we’ll free them.”

Ithan nodded, stepping forward and raising his hand, the Sigil flaring to life. He could feel the echo pulsing within the crowd, feeding off their emotions, binding them to the Hollow King’s will.

Taking a deep breath, he concentrated, letting the Sigil’s light wash over the square. The crowd’s frantic movements slowed, their faces relaxing as the echo’s influence weakened. The dark energy that had clouded their minds began to dissipate, and the people stumbled, confused, as they came to their senses.

One by one, they looked around, bewildered and disoriented. Ithan lowered his hand, the Sigil’s light fading as the last traces of the echo dissolved into the air.

Raelle approached, her gaze steady and approving. “You did it. You’re learning to control the Sigil and use it as a shield, not just a weapon.”

Ithan managed a tired smile. “It’s… harder than it looks.”

Kaelan clapped him on the shoulder. “And it will only get harder. But you’re proving that you’re up to the challenge.”

Seraphine’s expression softened as she looked at Ithan. “You’re becoming more than just a Sigil-bearer. You’re becoming a guardian.”

Ithan felt a surge of pride but also a growing weight. The Hollow King’s power was unlike anything he’d ever encountered, and the responsibility of protecting his world was daunting. But as he looked around at the faces of the people he’d saved, he knew he couldn’t turn back.

The Hollow King’s shadow loomed, but Ithan was ready to face it, one step at a time .
