Chapter 15:

Chapter 17: Trial of the Ancients

Veilborn: Awakening

The following days were grueling. Ithan’s training had moved from simple drills to more complex challenges, ones that tested both his physical abilities and his mind. Lyra introduced him to the Trial of the Ancients, a ritual she had inherited from her family’s teachings.

“This trial is designed to push you beyond your limits, Ithan. But it will also reveal the true cost of wielding the Sigil’s power,” Lyra explained.

He stepped into a chamber lined with runes that glowed faintly. As soon as he entered, the door sealed behind him, and the room filled with an intense, almost oppressive, energy. His vision blurred, and suddenly he found himself in an unfamiliar landscape—a vast, desolate desert.

A voice echoed through the air. “Face your weakness, or be consumed by it.”

Ithan’s heart pounded. Shadows emerged from the sand, figures he recognized: his family, Lyra, even past allies who had fallen in battle. They accused him, whispered doubts into his ears, sowing seeds of insecurity.

But then he remembered Lyra’s words: Control your emotions.

Drawing on his training, he steeled himself, focusing on the Sigil. The shadows faded, replaced by a single figure—the Hollow King himself, standing at the far end of the desert, a silent challenge in his gaze.

Ithan took a step forward, unafraid. “I’ll defeat you. I’ll protect the ones I love.”

The vision faded, and he found himself back in the chamber. Lyra’s face appeared above him, concern in her eyes. “You did it. Few make it through the Trial of the Ancients.”

He stood up, steady and resolute. “I feel ready. For whatever comes next.”
