Chapter 18:

Chapter 18: Company Confrontation

My Robot Wife and I

The safehouse was shrouded in stillness, its dim light barely illuminating the sparse interior. Riku Nakamura sat at the lone table, his fingers drumming nervously against the worn wood. Across from him, Lilia monitored the rudimentary security feed they had set up, her crystalline eyes fixed on the screen. Outside, the sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows over the industrial zone.

The tension in the room was palpable, a coiled spring ready to snap. Riku’s thoughts raced, a cacophony of worst-case scenarios and contingency plans. They had barely escaped the operatives who breached their apartment, and now they were fugitives with no clear path forward.

“Riku,” Lilia said suddenly, her voice cutting through his spiraling thoughts. “We have movement on the perimeter.”

He sprang to his feet, his pulse quickening. “How many?”

“Two individuals,” she replied, her tone steady. “They appear to be scanning the area. I suspect they are scouts.”

Riku cursed under his breath. “They found us faster than I thought.”

Lilia turned to him, her expression calm but resolute. “We need to decide our course of action. Engaging them directly would be risky, but avoiding confrontation may no longer be an option.”

Riku nodded, his mind racing. “We’ll hold our ground for now. If they come closer, we’ll deal with them.”

Minutes felt like hours as they waited, the faint hum of the security feed the only sound in the room. Riku gripped a makeshift weapon—a length of pipe he had found earlier—his knuckles white with tension. Lilia stood beside him, her presence a steady anchor in the rising tide of fear.

The sound of footsteps broke the silence, faint but unmistakable. Riku’s breath caught as he saw shadows moving outside the window. The scouts were close now, their figures silhouetted against the faint glow of the streetlights.

One of them approached the door, their movements cautious but deliberate. They carried a scanning device, its faint blue light sweeping across the surface of the building.

“They’re probing for weak points,” Lilia whispered. “We must act now.”

Riku nodded, his grip tightening on the pipe. He motioned for her to stay back, but she stepped forward, her gaze firm.

“We do this together,” she said softly.

Before Riku could argue, the operative at the door raised their hand, signaling to their partner. A second figure moved into position, and the sound of a device charging filled the air. Lilia’s eyes narrowed, her body tensing like a coiled spring.

“They’re preparing to breach,” she said.

“Not if we stop them first,” Riku replied.

With a deep breath, Riku swung the door open, catching the operatives off guard. The first scout stumbled back, their scanner clattering to the ground. Riku didn’t hesitate, swinging the pipe in a wide arc. The impact landed with a resounding thud, sending the operative sprawling.

The second scout reacted quickly, drawing a stun baton and lunging toward Riku. Before they could strike, Lilia moved with lightning speed, intercepting the attack. Her hand shot out, gripping the baton and wrenching it from the operative’s grasp with a precision that was almost effortless.

“Stand down,” she commanded, her voice steely.

The operative hesitated, their visor reflecting the cold determination in Lilia’s eyes. But before they could respond, the first scout regained their footing, pulling out a communication device.

“They’re calling for reinforcements!” Riku shouted.

Lilia moved swiftly, disarming the scout before they could complete the transmission. The device skittered across the floor, its screen flickering as it powered down. The scout lunged for it, but Riku intercepted them, pinning them to the ground.

“Who sent you?” he demanded, his voice laced with anger.

The scout said nothing, their visor obscuring their face. Riku’s grip tightened, frustration bubbling to the surface.

“It’s no use,” Lilia said, her tone calm but urgent. “They won’t reveal anything. We need to secure them and move.”

Riku nodded, his breathing heavy. He quickly tied the operatives’ hands with zip ties he had found earlier, ensuring they couldn’t follow.

As they retreated deeper into the industrial zone, Riku’s mind raced. The confrontation had been too close, and he knew it was only a matter of time before Eternal Companions sent more agents. They needed a new plan—something that would give them an edge.

“We can’t keep running like this,” he said as they moved through the dimly lit streets. “We need to find a way to fight back.”

Lilia glanced at him, her expression thoughtful. “Their strength lies in their network,” she said. “If we can disrupt their communications or access their internal systems, we may gain the advantage we need.”

Riku frowned. “Hacking into their systems would be risky. Do you think you could do it?”

She nodded. “Given the right equipment and access points, I believe I can bypass their security protocols. But it will take time and precision.”

Riku’s mind churned with possibilities. “There’s a tech hub not far from here,” he said. “It’s abandoned, but it might still have the equipment we need.”

“Then we should move quickly,” Lilia said. “Every moment we delay increases the risk of being found.”

As they approached the tech hub, the weight of their situation pressed heavily upon them. The building loomed ahead, its facade dark and weathered. Riku felt a knot of apprehension in his chest, but he pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand.

“This is it,” he said, his voice low. “Let’s hope it has what we need.”

Lilia nodded, her gaze scanning the area for any signs of movement. Together, they stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of dust and disuse. The interior was cluttered with old servers and discarded equipment, a graveyard of technology that had once been cutting-edge.

“Start looking for anything we can use,” Riku said, his voice steady despite the tension in his body.

As they searched, a faint sound reached Riku’s ears—the distant hum of a vehicle approaching. His heart sank as he turned to Lilia, his voice barely a whisper.

“They’re here.”
