Chapter 37:

Magic Assessment Part 2

Lost Child from Another World

Atlas first needed to check his top attributes using the orb on top of the instructors' table. The table was off to the side by the window, so the students would have room to shoot their best magic when they were done checking for their attributes.

To be honest, the student could show their status cards, but the orb was mainly used to see how much mana a person had. Seeing their top attributes was just a bonus.

Atlas followed instructions and put his hand on the orb. He didn’t have to put a lot of magic into the orb because it only needed a little bit of magic to activate. If he put too much, it could explode.

He took his hand off when it had enough of his mana and waited for the results. He stared at the contents of the orb spin around until three colors popped up. He saw red, pink, and yellow in the orb. The colors were intense and bright. Not only that, it radiated a lot of magical energy, enough to make everyone in the room feel suffocated.

The feeling of the mana was oppressive and strong, making everyone feel how much magic power he had.

Instructor Darius exclaimed, “This… I was expecting you to have a ridiculous amount of mana, but seeing is believing as they say. And your strongest attributes reflect your blessings. It’s quite amazing to see.”

“Amazing…” Instructor Ciaron said while looking at the orb with shining eyes.

“Well, we know you are strong so let’s quickly do the showcase part of the assessment and you can be on your way!”

Atlas nodded and stood in the center of the room. Several feet in front of him, a wooden dummy stood in front of a reinforced brick wall. A magic barrier lined the walls of the room so the students could not destroy the room if they missed the dummy.

He thought about what to do and decided that he would do what he did best, coating his magic around his fists and his arms. He trained in martial arts and his magic was incorporated into his fighting style.

Atlas took a deep breath and instantly, his arms and fists were coated with lightning magic. The lightning created this crackling sound as it flickered up and down his forearms.

Then he rushed to the dummy and punched it. Only the lightning magic made contact with the dummy but it still exploded upon contact. Pieces of the dummy flew in every direction.

Luckily, Cairon put up a barrier in front of the desk, so they didn’t get hit.

As for the area where the dummy once stood, it was charred with a gaping hole in the floor. The dummy could not be put back together.

“Aww, dang it! I thought I held back a little, but I guess I went too far.” Atlas scratched his head. He promised he wouldn’t destroy anything but he even put a hole in the floor.

He sheepishly looked at the instructors and bowed his head. “I am sorry!”

Darius waved his hand like he was dismissing his apology. “It’s fine. It is replaceable and we can fill the hole in with magic until it can get fixed. Thank you for showing us your magic. You pass!”

Ciaron nodded. “You will be placed in Class A so do your best with your studies. Do not fall behind.”

“We will also note that you need some work on your magic control. When the time comes, we hope you won’t destroy anything but the dummy, okay?” Darius teased him a bit at the end.

“Thank you, Instructors! I will do my best.”

Atlas was only in the room for eight minutes. It was a bit longer than the other students, but it wasn’t so long that it was concerning.

When he walked to Cyrus, Ronan, and Sophie, he gave a cheeky grin. “I didn’t destroy the orb but I accidentally destroyed the dummy and the floor! Not too bad right?” And proceeded to tell them the extent of the damage.

Cyrus figured as much as Atlas still needed to work on his control. “Not too bad... You did a good job!”

“I agree. You did a good job not destroying the orb too.” This was what Sophie was the most worried about. If the orb was destroyed, there would only be two usable ones because they were incredibly expensive and hard to make.

It would delay the testing by a day if one of them was destroyed…

Ronan looked at the two. Why were they encouraging bare minimum behavior?

Well, it was true that this was good enough because he saw how Atlas had a hard time controlling his mana, especially as his mana capacity increased over the years.

“Well, it’s good the damage was kept to a minimum. You did well, Atlas.” Ronan did his best to encourage Atlas but it did sound a little weird.

Still, Atlas was happy that he only destroyed the dummy and the floor. Everything else was good so that was a victory in his eyes!

Many people around them were listening in on their conversation and were flabbergasted. Was this something to be proud of?!

*****

After a while, it was finally Cyrus;’ turn. Atlas wished him luck while Sophie and Ronan didn’t see a need to give him advice. Just that he should do enough to get into Class A.

Cyrus waved to them and made his way to the testing room. He entered the same room Atlas went into and was greeted by Instructor Darius and Ciaron.

Across the room, he saw a patch of dirt where the test dummy sat. He knew that was the area Atlas accidentally destroyed.

Darius spoke up to grab Cyrus’ attention. “Ah, it is the apostle Cyrus Alnhart. It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Darius Feron, but you can call me Instructor Feron. As for that hole we filled up, you can thank your brother for decorating the room…”

“Hello, Lord Cyrus Alnhart…” Ciaron’s small voice could be heard from behind Darius. “My name is Ciaron Eleyver, but you can call me Instructor Eleyver…”

“It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. As for the damage Atlas has caused, have the academy bill the Alnhart family. We will pay for the repairs.” Cyrus felt that was the best option.

All three of them looked at the charred tile and the hole that was filled up with earth magic and felt what Cyrus said was for the best.

“We will make note of that.” Darius scratched his head and then pointed at the orb. “Let’s get started on your assessment. We have to be quick after the delay.”

Cyrus nodded and walked over to the orb. He put a small amount of mana into the orb and waited for the results. A few moments later, the crystal orb showed that his strongest attributes were the same as Atlas.

As for the amount of mana he had, it was comparable to Atlas’ but it was slightly less. Which was fine because Cyrus had a little more interest in the sword than in magic. He still kept up with his magic training so he could become a magic knight.

“It’s still amazing the second time around.” Darius was amazed that he was able to see two children blessed by the Gods.

Ciaron nodded his head. “Yes, amazing… When you are ready, you can use magic to hit the dummy.”

Cyrus turned to the dummy and knew the perfect magic to use. Ice began to form on his left hand and quickly turned into a one-handed sword. Using magic, he launched it toward the dummy and had the ice sword slash the dummy’s head off.

This all happened in a matter of seconds.

When the ice sword flew back to him, Cyrus looked at the instructors. “Is this acceptable?”

Darius nodded. “Of course. You have an amazing grasp of mana control. Even with an attribute that isn’t your highest. Not only that, you were able to use wind magic to have the sword fly from your hands. Wonderful job! We do not have anything else to teach you when it comes to magic, right Ciaron?”

Ciaron excitedly responded, “I agree! And I have already assigned you to Class A… Congratulations!”

“Yes, congratulations, Cyrus. We cannot wait to see how much your will magic will grow in the future.”

“Thank you, Instructor Darius and Instructor Eleyver. It is an honor to be praised so highly by you both.” Cyrus bowed, showing his respects to the magic instructors.

Cyrus left the testing room so he could go back to his friends.

As someone who had been training since he was a child, he knew his strengths and weaknesses and was confident in his abilities. He wasn’t insecure about his intelligence or his talents.

As he walked back into the auditorium, he saw Atlas, Sophie, and Ronan waiting for him. Atlas looked particularly happy to see him, giving a goofy smile while waving at him.

Cyrus gave a smile back and walked up to him. “I passed.”

“We knew you would!” Atlas excitedly jumped up and down.

Sophie and Ronan couldn’t understand why Atlas was so excited, but they didn’t burst his bubble.

“It looks like we will all be in Class A,” Sophie said with some anticipation. “Now we get to see each other every day instead of once a week.

Ronan, who also took the magic assessment, was the happiest to know that he would be in the same class as them… Thankfully, Atlas studied hard.

With their magic assessments done, they made their way to the training grounds to take their combat exam.
