Chapter 8:
Aptitude
"Do you plan on living here one day?" Alicia asked.
"I've never actually thought about any of that stuff." I replied not thinking much into it.
This was partly true because Echo gave us everything we needed so that we could focus on our missions without distractions.
"You've never thought about where you're going to live and what you're going to do in the future?"
She seemed shocked, almost as if it was something unacceptable.
"Nah, I'm just planning on leading a simple life after I get enough money while working as an agent."
I looked outside the window of the vehicle we were in.
'It must be every agent's dream to one day live here. I wonder why Miss Airi prefers not to.'
The window opened to the most technologically advanced city in the world. A beautiful lively place promising luxury and comfort to all within its borders, Main Island, the largest of the four Echo Nexus Islands.
"Alicia, where exactly are we going?" Luna, who was seated next to Garnet behind us, asked.
"Melissa said we're going to get our cards activated which will allow us access to some of the training facilities on Herald Island, where we'll be training."
"Why aren't we training like other squads, in Staryl City?" Luna continued to ask.
This time, Lucas answered.
"Because Melissa is the best Squad Overseer there is and if she thinks that's best for us, then it is. Plus, she holds a lot of power as you might have all now realized."
He was right. Just getting the opportunity to step on any one of the four 'Big' islands wasn't something easily achievable.
"With the kind of service she's giving us, I'd be surprised if we don't become the best elite squad E.A has ever had." I said to Alicia.
The vehicle arrived at its destination.
'Somehow, every second I'm on this Island, I can't help but feel he's watching me.'
As I walked out of the vehicle, I glanced at the shadow of one of the tall buildings. There was a man hiding there, watching us.
"You can see him too, can't you?"
This question caught me totally off guard. I looked at Alicia confused as we walked towards the building.
"See who?"
"That guy's been following us since we set foot on this island. I don't know what's going on, but something's off about this place. I have a feeling that's part of the reason we're here. I just wanna get my card and leave this island."
I don't know why, but at that moment, a newfound respect for her sparked in me.
'Interesting.'
'Squad Dalet had easy access to Arsenal Island, meaning that the 'Arsenal Island access feature' of their cards was activated.'
The receptionist handed me my card.
'I don't think he hacked them, since these cards are actually a technological wonder to many scientists and programmers. Unless he had some kind of help from the authorities. But then, why give him full access so that he can steal from them? Unless… one of the leaders must be a traitor.'
"Once we get to Herald Island, you will use those cards to access most of what you will need. Training begins immediately after we get there. I will give you more details later."
Melissa said to us as we walked out of the building.
Little did we know what lay ahead of us would be a lot different than we imagined.
