Chapter 6:
Ring Fall Y2K
Oscar hit the ground hard while the metal of Chestnut’s back creaked in protest as the front part finished closing up around his chest and head.
The inside was well padded and was designed to survive falls of up to 100 meters with minimal damage to the pilot. Thus, Oscar only felt the some of the impact, but it still shook every bone in his body and made his back sound like a glowstick snapping.
When he found out he could still move and is still alive he could not help but laugh.
This once again got the attention of the enormous humanoid monstrosity that turned towards him. Oscar rolled and stood up as fast as he could and started running still smiling and thankful he was alive.
The monster screamed an inhuman shriek that sounded like a jet engine taking off and a low rumble. Immediately the web of green crystals all over the monster moved, focusing more of them on the legs and one arm. Causing all of them to grow evenly while the other arm shrunk significantly.
Oscar reflexively looked for any place to take cover and hide only to see a corner to turn in and a huge pillar to hide behind. The monster used its enormous hand to pick up a huge chunk of broken wall from the building he was just in and throwing it.
Oscar barely had a moment to roll in to the street at the corner while the rock smashed in to where he used to be. The floor cracking under the impact while shards of stone flew everywhere
Oscar used the momentum he built up till now to jump over a small building and step on the balcony of another to gain altitude and out of the small alleyways.
The Giant was surprisingly fast with its now disproportionally huge legs.
He was covering the distance between them at an alarming rate with another huge rock at hand. Oscar rolled off the building on to the ground behind it, trying to break the line of sight of the monster while he turned in a random direction.
But the moment he landed and started running a green flash of light came from the giant that threw the wall at the building between them.
The huge chunk of stone that was already bigger then Oscar suddenly grew in size at an alarming speed. Before Oscar knew what happened the entire building and the two other directions he could have gone to have been annihilated as the now glowing green rubble slowly returned to their original size.
“Oh Fuck! This is bad! Can they do that?!” Oscar yelped as he started sprinting.
The monster stepped over the rubble regaining line of sight as the firefighter Opened his mechs left hand, drawing a water hose and spraying it with all the force he had at the ankle of the Uncomfortably close monster.
Oscar hit the monster right on the side as the leg was descending down with a huge blast of water that used up most of his remaining tank, causing the monster to twist its ancle and scream while falling and destroying some residential areas.
Now that most of the water Oscar had saved was gone, his mech was lighter and faster. Oscar used the back of the fallen brute to get on top of some buildings. The moment Oscar jumped off from the shoulder with the small hand, the crystals shifted, and the hand started to grow to its original size. Oscar returned his left hand to normal and switched the right one to a spinning saw blade
Oscar quickly cut the door to the balcony he was at using his spinning saw and ran through the soon to be destroyed building while the giants hand was chasing him.
He almost got out through the other side of the apartment but just as Oscar jumped out the window the hand got him midair.
Without thinking Oscar Caught the edge of the window and started to cut in to the giants thumb.
the pressure let off for a moment and the man used this opportunity to make his defenestration.
As Oscar rolled on the ground to change his momentum forward, he could not help but notice how empty the street was. As if all the people were gone and he was the last human on earth.
Oscar of course knew this was not the case, that the people are hiding to avoid death and others existed elsewhere. But in the past month in old Paris Oscar did not see another living human.
While Oscar took a minute to Catch his breath, he saw the giant extract his hand and look at him with disgust. The giant stepped closer climbing on top of buildings like a person trying to sneak up on a cockroach.
Oscar started to run again; he did not stop until he hit another dead end when the entire street was destroyed with rubble of buildings preventing passage.
The man frantically looked around to find anything he could do to escape only to see an alleyway leading to a narrow set of streets going around the rubble.
The alleyway was covered in wood planks and metallic pipes along with half a car and some more rubble.
Oscar began to cut what he could with his saw while the monster got closer and closer.
Just as the green giant picked up a car and prepared to smash Oscar on the head the metal gave way, and the Firefighter could squeeze himself in to the small passage.
The air whooshed and the ground cracked as the car grew in size with another green flash, right before it hit the ground causing a massive cloud of dust.
The air filtration system of Chestnut immediately started working as Oscar used his heat scanning camera to see where to go.
As he came out of the alleyway, he saw for a moment craters, an entire gas station still on fire and multiple bodies of yellow Fallen without a head.
Oscar could hear the giant slam things at the rubble and buildings close by and guessed he had only a few more seconds before something gave up and he would be chased again.
He turned around only to see a giant spear bigger than his mech right in front of his eye. He thought it was the end but when he realized it was held by half a mech with its cockpit ripped open and blood covering the place where a pilot should be did he realize that it was no threat and in fact a dead soldier.
As he walls of the buildings shook Oscar knew his time was running low. He looked at the Craters on the walls and floors thinking of hiding in one when his eye saw that one of them connected to a tunnel.
After taking a look and seeing that the giant will not fit there and that it is not to high, Oscar jumped into what he thought was an underground train tracks.
