Chapter 4:

The Hidden Machine

Chronicles of the Iron Divide

The Hidden Machine
Setting:
The rebels have retreated to a hidden safe house outside the city—a crumbling estate swallowed by overgrowth and time. With the artifact recovered from the Imperial facility, tension hangs thick in the air as the team wrestles with what they've uncovered. Meanwhile, the Empire tightens its grip on London, and Elric Graves plans his next move.

Page 1-2:
The chapter opens with Liora pacing in a dimly lit room, Ezra examining the artifact on a rickety table covered in blueprints and tools. Thin sparks fly as he carefully probes its surface with delicate instruments.

Ezra (muttering):
"This… this isn't some fancy energy core. It's molecularly engineered… alive in a way."

Liora:
"Alive? What does that even mean?"

Ezra:
"It reacts to stimuli like it has instincts. The Empire didn't make this, Liora. They found it."

The artifact glows faintly, pulsating in time with Ezra's movements. The rebels stare on in a mixture of wonder and terror, but Liora's face sets, an instinctive feeling that this find is more perilous than they can fathom.

Cut to the Imperial Palace in London.
Elric Graves stands before the Prime Technocrat, a figure shrouded in shadow, holding the reins of the technological development of the Empire. The room is sleek and sterile, a clear contrast to the grimy industrial landscape of the city.

Prime Technocrat:
"You failed to protect the generator, and now the artifact is in rebel hands. Explain yourself."

Elric: (very calmly)
"They underestimated our technology. A mistake I don't intend to repeat."

The technocrat reveals that the artifact is part of a series of discoveries unearthed during secret excavations in the colonies. These artifacts are the key to the Empire's next technological leap, and their retrieval is paramount.

Prime Technocrat:
"You will not fail again, Captain. Bring it back at all costs-or do not return."

Elric leaves, his jaw tight with resolve, his thoughts clearly lingering on Liora.

Page 6-7:
Back at the safe house, tensions flare among the rebels. Kale argues that the artifact should be destroyed before it can fall back into Imperial hands, while Ezra insists it could be their best chance to fight back.

Kale:
"You’ve seen what the Empire does with power. Imagine what they’ll do with this. We’re playing with fire!"

Ezra:
"Fire can burn, yes. But it can also forge. This could tip the scales in our favor—if we’re smart."

Liora listens silently, torn between the two perspectives. Her inner turmoil is shown through fragmented flashbacks of her family’s death and the first time she saw Imperial war machines in action.

Page 8-10:
Meanwhile, the mysterious figure with the glowing mechanical eye infiltrates the safe house, silently observing the rebels. As Liora steps outside for air, he finally reveals himself.

Mysterious Figure:
"Ashcroft. You’ve made quite the mess."

Liora immediately draws her weapon, her mechanical arm humming with energy.

Liora:
"Who the hell are you?"

The man introduces himself as Draven Mercer, a rogue scientist formerly with the Empire. He claims to know about the artifact's origins-and why the Empire is so desperate to retrieve it.

Draven:
"You think this is just another toy for the Empire's war machine? No. This artifact… it's part of something far older, far more dangerous. The Empire's meddling could end the world as we know it."

Draven offers an uneasy alliance: he will help the rebels decode the artifact if they can offer him protection. Liora is skeptical but knows they have little choice.

Page 11-13:
The rebels let Draven into their ranks reluctantly. With his help, Ezra starts to unlock the secrets of the artifact. Panels show a montage of them working together: lines of strange symbols projected onto walls, diagrams of unknown technology, and moments of awe as the artifact reacts to their tests.

In the midst of their work, Draven reveals a shocking truth: the artifact is one of several components of a device known as The Paradox Engine, an ancient mechanism capable of changing time and reality itself.

Draven:
"The Empire doesn't want power. They want control-over history, over the future. If they complete the Engine, there will be no rebellion, no resistance. Only them."

Page 14-15:
The chapter ends with a split scene:

The rebels preparing for their next mission, their determination renewed by the high stakes.
Elric leading a squadron of exosuit soldiers through the streets of London, tracking the rebels' movements with grim precision.
The final panel focuses on the artifact, now glowing brighter than before, as if it, too, senses the conflict ahead.
Liora (voiceover):
"We thought we were fighting for freedom. Now we're fighting for the very fabric of reality. And the Empire doesn't lose easily."
