Chapter 2:
Vox Collecta
I walked and walked. By this time I had become accustomed to this life, I mean who wouldn't after a decade of doing the same things over and over again. Wake up, eat, go explore, search for food, fetch water on the way back, eat dinner and then finally go to sleep. That was how it would be today, how it was yesterday, how it had been for the past decade.
I put my hands towards the sky letting only the little sunlight that could pass through the gaps between my fingers touch my eyes. Squinting, I guessed the time from the position of the sun. In roughly an hour it would be night-time, so I decided to stop exploring and instead went to fetch water. As I walked towards my destination, I surveyed my surroundings and reminisced, what had been a bustling city was now nothing more than rubble.
The somewhat happy thoughts were short lived as I had reached my destination, a building of sorts barely standing on its legs. I made my way towards a small opening in the wall and once inside descended the rubble to the bottom. The building was hollow, the insides had all collapsed leaving behind a single basement which itself had a small crater. By this time the sun had slept and moonlight peered into the building from the cracks in the roof.
As I looked towards the bottom of the crater, I found the moonlight illuminating the water down below making it seem like a sea of sapphire jewels. There my eyes met another's and we both stared at each other for what seemed to be an eternity. I smiled, if just barely, as a single tear fell down the crater killing my acquaintance. Before fear could engulf me, I threw a bucket down the crater and drew water. With a filled water container atop my head, I took one last look at the crater before beginning my journey back home.
