Chapter 3:
Polymathic
"If I turn my back for about four seconds, and youre lying under a tree?" How did you get there?” It was Paul sitting on a tree with food in his hands.
``Since you're here, why don't you help me!'' He planted himself on top of the tree.
"Hell no! My food is going to get cold, so I don't want to waste my time. Instead of passing off your problems, why don't you just move your ass and chase that lizard away?" ”
“You shifted your problems onto me first!”
“I worked hard and dont get to enjoy my meal?”
“Cause I'm paying!”
"I'm sorry for being such a nice person. It seems you've taught me a valuable lesson. There's no need to give alms to ungrateful people anymore. Suppose that thing eats you no more lizards. Suppose you kill it, no more lizards. I don't see any reason for me to intervene.'' With that he walked away, leaving me under the tree. I was pissed that I had to listen to that cocky bastard walk away without a care in the seconds before I died. I didn't mean for it to end like this! There was no way it would end like this. I was going to get revenge on him for throwing me to the wolves.
1 week later
As I walked toward the campsite, I wondered if I needed to dig too much. The child was probably already dead, but I was hoping that at least the lizard would claim the body. I brought a shovel just in case. It's very unfortunate. It's terrible for a polymath to die so early in life, but someone who gives up so quickly doesn't even deserve the title of polymath. At that moment, a tree came towards me at great speed. I quickly dodged it, but there was another following as if the forest was attacking me. I split it in half and got into a defensive stance. Something threw a tree at me. I thought someone was probably after me again, so I ran quickly to solve the problem and saw the boy with a tree in his hand charging towards me without regard for his own safety.
``There you are, you selfish bastard!'' I jumped over him and hit him in the back of the head with the shovel, but he didn't flinch and swung the tree around. I maneuvered around it, summoning a large amount of fire into my fist, then splitting it in half and turning around again to knock the kid out.
When I stood up, Paul was already tending the fire and I was struggling to lift my head. He was poking at it with a shovel.
“Why the shovel?”
"I needed a better fire iron, so I brought this. What's your name?"
``It's Nash.'' The name of the poet Ogden Nash was similar to Pauls' name, so I decided to take it. Stands out much less than my given name.
"Well, Nash, I don't want to waste your time, so let me teach you the basics of mana and magic. I know you just woke up, but that doesn't matter."
"Before that, why are you so insistent on training me?"
"Weren't you the one who said you had to be stronger than me to get home?"
"Yes, but that's my problem, not yours. Why help me when you've made it clear that you don't like dealing with other people's problems?"
"Polymaths do not age, which makes them high in potential strength and knowledge, making them perfect leaders for countries and nations. This can be a problem, if a ruler was enlightened of a polymath in the area, they would be executed on the spot or exiled.”
“Because they are a threat to power.”
“As the successor to the previous leader, it seems like your mission is to become even stronger.”
"You were spot on."
"I don't mind training you as long as I can."
"The first thing you need to know is that magic is a three-tier system. First, you accumulate mana, which is the basic fuel for magic. Second, you shape it into one of the four elements. Or you can pass it to an existing element, which is more difficult than creating, but has advantages. The final step is the output.'' He created a water sphere with his hands and threw it at me.
"Did you need to get me wet?" He pulled his arm back like a baseball player and threw it against a tree. Shattering the wooden giant.
``Would you rather I do that?'' I nodded ``no'' as quickly as I could.
"Also, you're not wet. When you release mana or it dissipates, the water disappears. If there's no fuel, it disappears along with the mana." My head became dry again.
Before you learn magic, I'll teach you how to fight. Without basic combat, knowledge magic is only useful against other magic users. ”
"What if I learned how to use a weapon? Wouldn't it be faster that way?"
"Don't put the cart before the horse. Learning basic combat first will help you in the long run, especially when learning anti-magic."
“Anti-magic?”
"Yes, there are actually three types of anti-magic, but don't worry about my plan of action. If you try hard enough, you can learn them all in just under seven years. After all, it's not that important for a polymath. "Well, it's been 30 years and I still don't have confidence in my anti-magic abilities."
My schedule for the next two years was as follows. Train immediately after waking up. Specifically, it's about fighting animals that are bigger than you. The next day I fought Paul. If I lose, I have to go out to find dinner. 9 times out of 10 I'd have to fight an oversized spider or praying mantis to get it. The next year, I fought Paul with his weapon in hand. Lose with minor injuries. hunt for food. He was gone every night, and he would sometimes disappear for days at a time, but that meant I was either resting, setting a trap for revenge, or training alone. It was a chance. You can't dig enough pits full of giant snakes. Once I was able to keep up with him and he was satisfied, I could move on to the weapon. It took nearly eight months for him to be satisfied. Afterwards, I was taught how to use swords, spears, and knives. I don't even remember how many times I got cut or seriously injured during that training.
"Congratulations Nash. You're almost graduating. As for hand-to-hand combat and weapons, you're at least strong enough to hold out and find a way out."
"I've been training for over two years, and the results are worth it!"
"We have to look at it relatively. Against a small child, you can win with a flick of the forehead. Against a small army of trained soldiers, when you look for cover, you can win. You don't have what it takes for a small army."
"So, what do I need?"
“Now come with me to the place where I usually work to earn grain. Since you have the ability to protect yourself, I will ask you to go and buy the things you need for training and survival. .”
"Wait a minute, there's a town nearby where I don't have to sleep on the ground and look for food every day, so you're saying we don't live there?"
"Trust me, this town isn't worth living in. It's full of people who don't want to be found."
"Then why do I never meet these people in the forest?"
``Come with me.'' When they arrived at their destination, it was a cliff about 30 meters high, too steep to climb. As I approached it, I started to smell something rotten. As we approached, Paul started walking along the cliff and I followed him, only to find a corpse on the ground. I felt cold and sick as I watched the woman's body, covered in insects, fall to the ground from a tree branch, decomposing. The more I walked, the more things I saw. It was like Paul wanted me to see this. Or if he was looking for something. That's when we stopped and saw someone still breathing and looking up at us, two broken legs bleeding everywhere.
I stared at him as he stared back at us.
"Please. Let me rest." He was holding a shard of glass and was about to stab himself with a trembling hand. Paul held out his hand to the man without saying anything. The man started crying and handed Paul the broken glass. He looked at me, grabbed my hand, and put the glass in my hand.
``This is how you can become strong enough to take on small armies.'' I knelt down and held the glass in my hand. I froze. All I could do was stare at him, wondering what he had done to put me through this. How did he get here and what choices led him to make this the final choice of his life? Then he grabbed my arm, smiled, raised his head and closed his eyes. I didn't want to think about it. I heard a small moan as I pushed in. I started to panic, my breathing quickened and all I could think was that he wanted this. Paul grabbed my arm and pulled me up.
"Believe me, it's never been easier. Many more people will come to you seeking the same treatment. Some will seek your life. If so, you must fulfill their wishes, regardless of the circumstances.
This is how my training began.
