Chapter 18:

Chapter 19: The Heart of Darkness

Shadows Ascend

The night seemed to stretch on endlessly, a suffocating presence that wrapped itself around them like a living thing. The forest around them had grown unnaturally quiet. Even the wind had ceased to stir, as if holding its breath in anticipation of what was to come.

Zeryn’s heart hammered in her chest as the shadows shifted around them. Her hand remained firmly on the hilt of her blade, her senses sharp. Something was coming. She could feel it. The darkness was alive, watching them.

“We’re not alone,” the leader said, his voice barely above a whisper, though it carried an unmistakable authority. He scanned the perimeter, his eyes narrowing into the inky blackness beyond the firelight. “Stay alert.”

The green-eyed figure stood motionless, a silent sentinel. Zeryn couldn’t help but admire the calmness in their posture, the confidence that radiated from them as if they were one with the shadows themselves.

Then, it happened. The first shadow moved—almost imperceptibly at first, a flicker in the corner of Zeryn’s vision. It was gone before she could focus on it fully, but she knew it had been there. The air crackled with an electric tension, and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end.

“They’re not just shadows,” the leader murmured. “They’re the remnants of the Eclipseborn.”

Zeryn’s stomach twisted. She had heard of them in passing—the mysterious beings who had long ago been erased from history, their influence lingering only in the dark corners of the world. But to know that these entities were more than mere legends was terrifying. They were alive in the shadows, capable of manifesting in ways Zeryn had never imagined.

Without warning, the shadows surged forward, as if propelled by a single will. The leader stepped forward, his blade glinting in the dim firelight. “Get ready.”

Zeryn raised her hand, summoning the darkness to her side, trying to steady her breathing. The shadows responded immediately, writhing like snakes around her fingers, but something felt off. The darkness felt... different. More malevolent. It was as though it was pulling away from her, unwilling to obey her commands.

“Focus, Zeryn!” the green-eyed figure shouted.

The moment they spoke, the shadows seemed to snap back under her control. She didn’t have time to dwell on it as the first of the Eclipseborn emerged from the darkness.

It was a towering figure, its body woven from the very shadows themselves, eyes glowing a sickly green. Its form was both human and something otherworldly, the lines of its shape constantly shifting like smoke in the wind. A cold laugh echoed from its mouth, hollow and chilling.

Zeryn’s heart pounded as she readied herself for the fight. The leader charged forward with lightning speed, his blade slicing through the air. The shadowy figure dodged with an eerie fluidity, too fast for Zeryn to follow. It retaliated with a slash of its own, a long, ethereal blade made of pure darkness.

Zeryn barely managed to deflect the attack, her own shadows rising to intercept the blow. The force behind the strike sent her stumbling backward, her feet sliding on the damp earth. She gritted her teeth, struggling to regain her balance.

The green-eyed figure was already in motion, their body melding with the shadows as they dashed forward, a blur of movement. The leader wasn’t far behind, pushing forward with relentless precision.

Zeryn watched in awe as the two fought, their movements almost synchronized as if they were dancing with the shadows themselves. The Eclipseborn creature roared in anger, but it couldn’t keep up with the speed and power of her allies.

She tried to focus, but her mind kept returning to the feeling—the cold, gnawing sensation deep within her chest. The shadows were pulling at her, urging her to give in. She could feel them whispering in the back of her mind, promising power, control, everything she’d ever wanted.

“Zeryn!” The leader’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Zeryn snapped back to the battle, her eyes widening as she saw an opening. The Eclipseborn was momentarily distracted by the green-eyed figure’s assault. She didn’t hesitate. She dashed forward, gathering the shadows around her until they became a swirling mass of darkness in her palm.

She lunged, her blade cutting through the air as she thrust it forward. The shadow creature attempted to block her, but Zeryn’s strike landed true, the darkness she had summoned cutting through its ethereal body like a blade through silk. The creature screamed in pain, its form flickering as if it were about to vanish into the very shadows it had come from.

But then, to Zeryn’s horror, it began to heal. The shadows coalesced, repairing the damage, reforming the creature’s twisted body. The green-eyed figure cursed under their breath.

“They regenerate!” they shouted, dodging another slash from another Eclipseborn that had joined the fray.

Zeryn’s eyes narrowed. She had to end this, and she had to do it now.

Without thinking, she raised her hands high, channeling the power of the shadows to their fullest extent. The world around her seemed to bend as she pulled the darkness in, gathering every ounce of it into herself. The air thickened, becoming charged with an energy that made her skin prickle.

The shadows around her began to hum, vibrating with an almost sentient power. Zeryn’s breath came in short gasps as she struggled to control the rising tide of energy. Her chest ached as the shadows pressed against her, begging to be released.

“Zeryn, stop!” the leader shouted, his voice filled with urgency. “It’s too much!”

But Zeryn could feel it—this was her chance. The Eclipseborn could regenerate, but the darkness? It was infinite, boundless. She wasn’t just using it anymore; she was becoming it.

With a primal scream, she released all of the power she had gathered.

The forest seemed to explode with darkness.

A massive wave of shadows surged forward, sweeping the Eclipseborn off their feet. The air crackled with the raw power of the shadows, as if the very essence of the forest itself had been consumed. The creatures howled as they were pulled into the blackness, their forms disintegrating as they were absorbed by the dark tide.

Zeryn fell to her knees, exhausted, her body trembling from the immense power she had just unleashed. She could barely catch her breath, the weight of the darkness still pressing heavily on her.

The green-eyed figure approached her, their eyes wide with something like awe. “You did it…”

The leader was silent, but his gaze held something else—concern, maybe even fear.

Zeryn’s heart pounded in her chest. She had won, but at what cost? The shadows felt more alive within her than ever before, and she wasn’t sure if she could ever truly control them.

“Let’s keep moving,” the leader said, his voice firm. “We’re not done yet.”

Zeryn nodded weakly, but as she stood, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the battle they had just fought was only a small part of something much darker, something even more dangerous than the Eclipseborn.

The real challenge was still ahead.
