Chapter 21:
Shadows Ascend
The shadows lunged, attacking from all directions. Zeryn barely had time to react, summoning her own darkness to shield herself and her allies. The tendrils of shadow met in a chaotic clash, each strike reverberating through the strange space. “These things just keep coming!” the green-eyed figure shouted, slashing through a beast-like shadow. “They’re testing us,” the leader said. His blade carved through the darkness with precise, calculated movements. “Stay together. We fight as one.” Zeryn nodded, focusing her energy to keep the shadows at bay. But as the battle raged on, she noticed something strange. The shadows weren’t just attacking—they were learning, adapting to their movements. “They’re changing,” she warned. The leader cursed under his breath. “We need to end this, now.” The woman’s voice echoed around them, calm and unyielding. “The darkness thrives on division. Only through unity can you overcome it.” Zeryn’s eyes darted to her companions. The green-eyed figure fought with reckless abandon, their strikes wild but effective. The leader moved with a methodical precision, his focus unwavering. And Zeryn herself was caught somewhere in between, struggling to balance her power and control. “Unity…” she whispered. It was a risk, but she had no choice. “Follow my lead!” she shouted, gathering her shadows into a single, concentrated mass. The green-eyed figure hesitated but nodded, channeling their energy to bolster Zeryn’s attack. The leader joined them, his blade glowing with an ethereal light as he synchronized his movements with theirs. Together, they unleashed their combined power. The clash of light and shadow exploded outward, consuming the attacking figures in a brilliant burst. When the dust settled, the shadows were gone, and the woman stood before them, her expression unreadable. “You have passed,” she said simply. “But this is only the beginning.” The space around them began to shift, the reflective ground cracking and falling away. The group was pulled back into the forest, collapsing in a heap near the spire. Zeryn’s head spun as she struggled to her feet. The spire had gone dark, its power seemingly drained. “What was that?” she asked, her voice shaky. “A warning,” the leader replied. “And a promise. We’re not fighting shadows anymore.
