Chapter 35: Shadows in the Wild

Shadows Ascend

The group pressed onward, leaving the ruins of the third spire behind. The landscape grew harsher with each passing day—twisted trees loomed overhead, their branches clawing at the sky, and the ground beneath their feet became cracked and barren.

Zeryn walked at the back of the group, her thoughts a tangled mess. The faint glow in her hands hadn’t faded, and the shadows inside her felt more alive than ever, whispering in a language she couldn’t understand.

“You’re quiet,” the green-eyed figure said, falling into step beside her. “Unusual for you.”

Zeryn shot them a glare but didn’t respond.

“Look, I get it,” they continued. “This whole ‘chosen one’ thing sucks. But brooding isn’t going to fix it.”

“I’m not brooding,” Zeryn snapped. “I’m thinking.”

“Sure you are.” They smirked but didn’t push further.

Ahead, the leader called for a halt. “We’re camping here for the night. Stay sharp—we’re deep in Eclipseborn territory.”

As the group set up camp, Zeryn wandered to the edge of the clearing. The shadows around her flickered restlessly, pulling her attention toward a distant glow in the forest.

“What is it now?” she muttered under her breath.

The glow grew brighter, and Zeryn felt an irresistible pull. Before she realized it, she was walking toward it, her feet moving as if of their own accord.
