Chapter 36:

Chapter 40: The Road Forward

Shadows Ascend

The next morning, there was a shift in the air. The group moved with a renewed sense of purpose, their steps more unified. It wasn’t perfect, but the walls they had built between each other were starting to crumble.

As they trekked through the dense forest, Zeryn found herself walking beside the green-eyed figure. For the first time in days, the tension between them seemed to have eased.

“You really think we can pull this off?” she asked.

The green-eyed figure gave a half-smile. “I think we have a chance.”

Zeryn was about to respond when the leader called from ahead. “We’re almost there. Stay sharp.”

The path to the final spire loomed ahead, and though the dangers were still very much alive, Zeryn felt a sense of resolve settle within her. They were no longer just a group of strangers brought together by fate—they were a team.

The true battle was still ahead, but for the first time, Zeryn wasn’t afraid to face it.

The forest was eerily quiet as they made their way deeper into the heart of Eclipseborn territory. The mist from earlier had lifted, but an unnatural stillness hung in the air. Zeryn kept her gaze fixed ahead, her thoughts clouded by everything they had endured so far. Her body felt heavy, the weight of her shadows growing with each step.

“Something doesn’t feel right,” the green-eyed figure said, pausing as if listening to the wind.

Zeryn nodded. “The tension’s thicker than before. It’s like the land itself is watching us.”

The leader stopped and turned toward them, his expression grim. “We’re nearing the final spire. It’s always like this before a big battle.”

“You don’t really believe that, do you?” Zeryn asked, her voice quieter than usual. “Not anymore.”

The leader’s eyes softened for a moment before hardening once again. “We’ve all been carrying the weight of this mission, Zeryn. But I won’t back down now. Not when we’re this close.”

“I didn’t say I was giving up.” Zeryn clenched her fists, shadows curling around her fingers. “I’m just wondering if we’re ready to face what’s ahead.”

The group continued forward, and as the hours passed, Zeryn’s unease only grew. The air grew colder, and the forest seemed to close in around them. The trees here were twisted and gnarled, their roots like claws reaching for the sky. Strange creatures watched them from the shadows, their eyes glowing faintly.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them cracked with a violent tremor. The earth split, and from the chasm emerged a dark figure, a twisted version of the Eclipseborn they had encountered before. This one was different—more powerful, more deliberate. Its eyes burned with a fierce crimson light, and it was covered in armor made of the same dark crystal that had surrounded the previous spires.

“Another guardian,” the leader muttered. “It’s waiting for us.”

The creature’s voice boomed, echoing across the forest. “You seek the spire? You shall not pass.”

Zeryn’s heart raced. “I’m tired of being stopped by these things!” She stepped forward, shadows gathering around her like a storm. “I will not be held back any longer.”

The green-eyed figure held out a hand. “Wait. There’s something different about this one.”

But Zeryn was already moving. Her shadows lashed out, aiming to strike the guardian, but as the attack hit, the creature absorbed the dark energy. It didn’t flinch. Instead, it surged forward, its eyes locking onto Zeryn with terrifying intensity.

“No more games,” it said, its voice a deep growl. “Your journey ends here.”

The air crackled with energy as the group prepared for the inevitable battle. The leader charged first, his blade gleaming in the dim light. The green-eyed figure followed, their movements swift and precise. But it was clear—the creature was far more powerful than anything they had faced so far.

Zeryn’s shadows lashed out again, but this time she felt the power within her coil and struggle. The darkness inside her resisted, fighting against her control. It was as if something within her was awakening, something far older than even the spires themselves.

“Zeryn!” The leader’s voice broke through her focus. “Focus! Don’t let the shadows control you.”

But Zeryn could barely hear him. Her connection to the shadows was growing stronger, and with it, her fear. What if the shadow she controlled was no longer hers? What if it had taken root within her, waiting to take her over completely?

With a shout, Zeryn thrust her hand forward. The shadows erupted from her, but this time they weren’t controlled—they were wild, chaotic. The guardian staggered back as it was struck, but it didn’t fall.

The green-eyed figure darted to Zeryn’s side, their expression serious. “You’ve got to rein it in. You’re losing yourself!”

Zeryn’s chest tightened. The power surged inside her, threatening to tear her apart. She could feel the ancient force within her, its whispers growing louder, urging her to surrender.

“No…” Zeryn gasped. “I won’t let you win.”

In that moment, something inside her snapped. She let go of the control and allowed the shadows to flow freely—completely unrestrained. The wild energy surged forward, tearing through the guardian’s defenses and shattering its armor.

The creature screeched as it collapsed, its form dissolving into the ether.

Zeryn collapsed to her knees, gasping for breath. The shadows around her flickered and withdrew, leaving her exhausted but alive.

The leader approached cautiously, his eyes filled with concern. “Zeryn, are you all right?”

Zeryn didn’t answer immediately. She was still catching her breath, her mind racing. The power was still there, thrumming beneath her skin. “That… that was too close.”

The green-eyed figure knelt beside her. “You can’t keep doing that, Zeryn. If you lose control again…”

“I know.” Zeryn’s voice was shaky, but determined. “I won’t let it happen again.”

The leader nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the fourth spire loomed. “We’ve got one more spire to deal with. Are we ready?”

Zeryn stood up, her body trembling but her resolve stronger than ever. “I’m ready.”

And with that, the group continued on their path, toward the final spire and whatever awaited them at the end of this journey.
