Chapter 5:
A Hero of Many Forms
The lantern’s flame glows purple in the dark. I can see flickers of gold, or blue among the trees. Harmless fireflies, and not so harmless willow-whips. Some plants glow too. Like bioluminescent flowers or moss, but I know better. There magic. All the plants here are. It’s like the forests hums with it. I raise my lantern higher as I walk though the dark. I don’t need to sleep. Never have. The magic flame is sadly useless to me. Because I am fae like my mother the flame is always purple. Though a lantern that can warn of fae creatures could be useful to others. I doubt it could save them though. Not here. This is we’re the fae live. Humanoids don’t tend to enter there realm uninvited and live. Walking in here would basically be a death sentence, but not to me. The forest and its many inhabitants accept me as one of them. Perhaps I am fae on my father’s side too. Suddenly my light goes out. With my mind it’s flicker it back to life; to see a young girl in an animal mask standing in front of me.
“Hello?” I ask. The look in her cold eyes making me nervous. She points in the detection I was walking in. I could sense a large group of humanoid fae life there. “I’m going that way.” I tell her. She grabs my sleeve. “Umm… ok. You can come if you want, just don’t-“ I choose my words carefully. “Don’t cause trouble.” She nods as I lead us towards the settlement. Then where falling as the earth tries to swallow us whole. I use wind magic to catch my fall then hers. She pulls out a spear. Shapes come out of the shadows. Elves mostly, and a few Tieflings, or half-fae. They surround us. Years of training has me put a hand on my dagger. Instinct has me cast. The wind picks up. A storm builds above. The girl looks at them untrusting. I step forward in front of her.
“Wh-“ I can’t ask because a tall woman steps forward, and tries to punch me in the face. Ok guess we’re doing this. Vines grow the lilac haired, elven/fae woman’s feet. She struggles as more come up to grab her. Wind picks up in the small canyon. The others seeing this charge forward. I use wind magic to blow them all back. A half-human and half-dwarf fellow gets in rage of the fae girl’s spear and she hits his legs with the back of it, and it he falls. Half the group hits the cavern wall. They look dazed. The rest fall flat on their back. The woman with lilac hair finally gets free. She raises a staff with a magic crystal on the end. She hits the ground with it, and it shakes. The earth makes small tremors. A rock breaks loose and falls towards me and the girl. The rock with my magic shatters in mid-air. A few pieces leave me with small scratches nothing more. I face the woman. I feel a deep rooted anger. My mother raised me with a deep desire to protect children. “You attacked a child!?” Moth like wings spurt from my back. I take flight just above the trembling ground. I slow it down to a stop. The girl grabs my ankle. My cuts heal. “Thanks.” I turn to the group before us. “Are you trying to get me to kill you?” When I hold up a hand vines flow from it, and carnivorous flowers bite in the direction of our enemies. “So be it.” I am my mothers daughter. Though murder may sometimes weigh on me. I do not fear it.
