Chapter 3:
UNDERGROUND [BxB]
As Finn and River immersed themselves in the exploration of the well-stocked pantry, Sage and Cove slowly emerged from the depths of slumber. They shared bleary-eyed glances, their gaze meeting in a moment of shared confusion and uncertainty.
Sage, still dressed in his mismatched attire, blinked his hazelnut almond-shaped eyes, trying to make sense of their unfamiliar surroundings. His soft features carried a touch of innocence and vulnerability, mirroring the essence of a startled fawn. Clad in his oversized fluffy pajama hoodie, Sage exuded an air of kindness. He wore untied Dr. Martens, hastily slipped on without much thought.
Cove shifted his gaze from Sage to the two figures engaged in conversation by the pantry. With his deep brown skin, short and impeccably styled curly hair, and the side shave that showcased his attention to detail, Cove appeared effortlessly refined. He wore a pristine blue and white uniform, while an expensive-looking watch graced his wrist.
The two boys exchanged a silent acknowledgment of their shared predicament, their eyes reflecting both fear and suspicion. They cautiously observed Finn and River, their voices kept low as they engaged in a whispered conversation.
Sage's soft voice carried a note of concern. "Do you think they're the ones who brought us here?"
Cove, his tone cautious, replied: "It's hard to say. We should remain vigilant. We don't know what their intentions are."
Finn's eyes widened with surprise as he caught sight of the two unknown boys awakening from their slumber. He nudged River, a mixture of astonishment and relief evident on his face. "River, look! They woke up too!"
Turning his attention to the figures standing a few meters away, Cove's expression remained guarded, while Sage's soft features relaxed into a gentle smile. Sensing an opportunity for connection, Sage approached them cautiously, still sitting on the ground, his voice soothing and kind. "Hello there. I'm Sage, and this is Cove. We just woke up. Do you have any idea how we ended up here?"
Cove's eyes widened at the sound of his name. How did Sage know?
In reality, Cove's uniform carried a hand-sewn label with his name on it. But his naive self still wasn't able to fathom the source of Sage's knowledge, and remained silent.
Finn, his voice filled with a mix of surprise and curiosity, replied while walking closer to the new acquaintances: "My name is Finn, and this is River. We're not sure either. We woke up in this bunker with no memory of how we got here. But we found this well-stocked pantry and some other things. We thought maybe someone left them for us."
Cove, still a bit suspicious, interrupted, his tone cautious. "How can we be sure you're not the ones who brought us here? Are you trying to deceive us?"
River stood there in silence, while Finn's eyes flickered with hurt. Sage stepped in, his voice soft but rational. "Cove, I understand your concern, but look at their clothing. It's dusty and a bit dirty, just like ours. It seems we've all been unconscious and lying on the ground together. Whoever brought us here took care of us and provided us with food. I don't think we're being held captive."
Cove's suspicion wavered slightly, and though he remained silent, a glimmer of acceptance crossed his face. The newly formed group now stood united, linked by its shared confusion and the mystery of those weird circumstances. While trust was yet to be fully established, a thread of understanding began to weave its way among the boys, binding them together in their quest for answers within the confines of the bunker.
River and Finn eagerly guided their newfound friends around the room, showcasing the discoveries they had made so far—the pantry, the stack of magazines, the old chessboard. The boys marveled at the small comforts that had been provided for them within the confines of the bunker.
As they continued their exploration, Sage's keen eye caught sight of an indentation in the wall resembling a small, dark corridor. He pointed towards it and turned to the group with curiosity shining in his brown eyes: "Is this where we're supposed to cook our food?"
Intrigued, the others followed Sage's gaze and discovered what appeared to be an old fireplace. However, it lacked any signs of wood or ashes. Instead, a soft material, reminiscent of a large, thin pillow, filled the hearth. The presence of a fireplace in a bunker raised more questions than it answered.
Cove furrowed his brow, his voice laced with perplexity. "Why would there be a fireplace in a place like this? It doesn't make sense", he stated the obvious.
Finn approached the fireplace, his curiosity ignited like a flame. He reached out to touch the unusual material within, causing a small cloud of dust to rise and shimmer in the air.
Then, with a sudden, resounding thud, the tranquility shattered. Startled, the boys covered their faces to shield themselves from the swirling dust. When they opened their eyes, a large black suitcase was laying in the fireplace in a tilted position, as if it had been thrown in but was too long to fit completely.
The room fell into an eerie silence that lasted several seconds, broken only by River's trembling voice. "What the fuck was that?"
The boys gathered around the enigmatic suitcase, their minds racing with wild hypotheses. The atmosphere brimmed with fear, excitement, and a burning desire to uncover the truth.
Sage's voice quivered with a mix of anticipation and caution. "Could it be a hidden compartment? Maybe the fireplace is more than it seems, and this suitcase is a part of it."
Cove's eyes widened, his skepticism mingling with a growing sense of intrigue. "Or it could be a deliberate placement, a message left for us to find. Someone wants us to open it." He got quiet for a couple of seconds, then kept talking with a note of caution: "I'm not sure opening the suitcase is a good idea. We don't know what could be inside, and it could be dangerous."
Finn, unable to contain his excitement, countered: "But Cove, think about it. This could be our chance to uncover some answers. We've been trapped in this bunker with no idea why or how we got here. Opening the suitcase might give us some clues."
River, sensing the tension in the air, interjected: "We need to take risks if we want to find out the truth. We can't let fear hold us back."
Sage, caught between his longing for answers and his desire for safety, hesitated before speaking. "I see both sides. It's risky, but it could also provide us with valuable information. Maybe we should give it a try."
The room fell into a momentary silence as each boy contemplated the options before them. Cove's reluctance to open the suitcase was evident, his arms crossed and his expression guarded. However, after a brief pause, he reluctantly nodded his head, conceding to the majority. His expression still revealed his discontent, as he realized he had been excluded from the decision to open the suitcase. He didn't like when people didn't listen to him. He didn't like being left out and ignored.
The other boys stood before the enigmatic suitcase, their hearts pounding with anticipation. With each passing second, the curiosity grew stronger, urging them to unveil its hidden contents. The unknown possibilities lay before them, waiting to be revealed as they prepared to open the mysterious container.
