Chapter 5:

Festival Of Dancing Lights

Project: Beyond Comprehension

“Bloody hell, c’mon body, you're tougher than this!” A disheveled June walks out of the bathroom of her space pod. “I know Bill said that the transition to real food would be rough but his warning coulda been a wee bit more foreboding to my impending doom”. A look of slight discomfort shifts into a look of shaken determination overtakes her sickly face “C’mon June, you got this. For the tatties!”

As June stumbles around her pod, she makes it out and sits on the hill, in her usual spot. In June's sorry, out-of-it state, she looks out across the landscape and notices the sunlight dimming.

“Oi, would ya look at that? The sun’s going down. I’ve been so busy with my jobby, that it didn’t even click that the sun was slowly getting to the horizon.” As June looks up, she sees the clouds above her begin to shine with a golden, heavenly, masquerade of color. June's pupils dilate as a warm feeling fills her chest. “Man, golden hour here is even more wonderful than back on earth.”

“This must mean it’ll be night soon, ooo now that’s exciting!” Her gaze shifts to the twin moons, One, a massive deep green and yellow moon shrouded in some kind of yellow haze. The other, a smaller, deep red moon, with white spots and streaks spread all over its surface. The red and white seemingly blends together across the moon's terrain.

“Hiya” June's voice calls out, addressing the twin sisters “I haven’t even given ya names yet. Sorry bout that!” Her face starts to shift in an exaggerated way as she thinks about the dire matter at hand.

Looking up at the small, crimson twin, she lies with her limbs sprawled out carelessly. Moments later her eyes light up as she points to the red moon and yells “I’ll name ya Cinna, short for Cinnamon! I think it's a pretty name don't you Bonnie?” A look of confidence sweeps over her, feeling very proud of herself.

“Now for you” and her finger locks onto the bigger sister of the two. “You seem sweet, while your sister seems like the spicy type.” Her face blanks for a moment as she finds the perfect answer sitting so obviously in front of her “OH OH, CINNAMON AND SUGAR!” June's whole body springs up as she discovers such a perfect pair of names for the twins “Nice to meet ya Cinna and Sugar, my name’s June. Hope you don’t mind being neighbors with me!”

Spending the next couple of hours watching the sunset, June lies on the hill, staring at the sky, hanging out with her new friends, and enjoying the peaceful moment. The sun, now almost fully covered by the horizon, the true night on Bonnie begins to present itself.

A symphony of Red, Yellow, and green spotlights begin to lightly cover the distant hills. The dancing lights crescendo as the sky grows darker. “Wow,” June's genuine awe twists through her breath and into the air. “Bonnie, you continue to bloody amaze me. And you two, Didn’t know you were such an enchanting duo”

“Bonnie you’re like a totally different lass at night! Like a humble tattie farmer during the day to a vibrant dancing queen at night!” June's eyes watch over the hills, blending the distinct reds, yellows, and greens where they overlap. As time goes by, ever so subtly, but enough to notice, the lights dance, moving along the stage set for the twins to perform their midnight revue.

June sits for a while, watching the show. Eventually, her thoughts wander a bit. “I wonder if the day I got here was the first day of Bonnies week? You wanna tell me, Bonnie?” The question floats into the air with no returning answer. “Alright alright, I know, I gotta wait and see.”.

“It's been three days now since I got here. At least 3 days on Earth that is. I wonder how long night will be here?” Her eyes close as she takes a deep breath in and exhales “Welp, I’m along for the ride. I’ll be finding out soon enough!”

A little more time goes by, and after several hours of laying on the hill, enjoying the moment, June returns to the pod ”I am bloody tired” She declares moments before yawning “Wooo, another good day for the books. Alright, good night Mrs. Pod. Goodnight Cinna and Sugar.” June puts on her pajamas and covers up in her bed. “Goodnight Bonnie” her words end with a dull echo inside her pod as her lights go out.

The next day comes around. June takes her morning to adjust to the feeling of waking up and seeing the night sky the same as it was before she fell asleep. After getting around for the day and writing Journey into the night and find more food and water, under her “Goal” section on her whiteboard, she starts to get ready to head out.

“Alright, check, check, and check. Got what I need, now it’s time to head out and see what else Bonnie has to offer!”. June leaves her pod and begins to leave her dome, traveling into the festival sponsored by the twins' worldwide performance.

With seeing how the sun sets, June took time to set up her suit's compass before she left, programming it to work with the waypoints to make traveling a little easier and more convenient for her.

The way June set the compass up is different from how one on Earth would work. Instead of the compass using the magnetic field to always roughly point north, her compass, she's programmed to function based on the sun and where it sets and rises. Because the sun sets in the west and rises in the east on Earth, she programmed the compass to treat where the sun sets and rises on Bonnie as west and east.

From Fort Tattie (The name she gave her base inside the dome), The direction she faces to look out at the view she enjoys faces nearly directly South. The last time when she found the tattie she went rough southwest. Today she has decided to fully go south and see what she can find.

Time passes on as June travels. After roughly 30 minutes of walking amongst the dancing lights, she starts to feel the overwhelming feeling that she needs to go faster.

“Man, this is beautiful. Ya know Bonnie, I like walking and enjoying the lights but it does make me think, If I want to explore more efficiently, I should try and make a rover to help me with travel. Don’t ya think that would be fun?” Bonnie sends her usually silent agreeance back to June.

Minutes turn into hours as June walks up and down the scattered hills and under the crimson leaves and bone-white bark that joins everything in the moonlight. The world around June, solitary and peaceful. June's body falls unaware of its own fatigue, almost as if the beauty from the twins dance, heals it, or at least soothes the aches in solemn, dancing lights.
