Chapter 9:
Pick a Brain & Fall in Love
It was now finally time for the much-anticipated interview.
Brainy and I took a seat on the vibrant red couch that had been meticulously placed on the stage. Her gaze remained averted from mine, as she was observing what Naomi was up to.
The blonde woman's eyes darted across the equipment situated on the basement floor. After a thorough inspection, she proceeded to navigate through the rows of red, empty seats.
"Alright! We're ready!" Naomi announces with a thumbs up. Brainy then nods and begins to fly closer to me.
"Lights!" Naomi called out. And almost immediately, two additional lights ascended from the ground, gliding through the air until they hovered directly above our heads.
"Cameras!" Naomi shouts again as the various pieces of filming equipment that had been on the ground begin to ascend into the air. It seems like each camera knows exactly where it belongs, rising to occupy its designated position around the stage.
The floating equipment now encircles Brainy and me. I feel like we're standing in the middle of a high-tech tornado right now.
"Audience!" Naomi then exclaimed. Suddenly, the previously once-empty theater seats started to fill up with holograms of various people.
Wow! This is incredible! The applause grew louder each time a new hologram appeared.
"Action!" Naomi shouts, and in an instant, the cameras switch on, their red lights blinking in unison.
"Welcome to the best dating show on Planet Earth!" Brainy's cheerful voice fills the stage as she starts flying upwards. "I'm your host, Brainy!" The crowd's response is overwhelming.
"This extraordinary reality show is open to everyone: humans, humanoids, robots, and even aliens from all the galaxies!" She says as her eyes are scanning the audience before her.
And I have to admit, I'm quite shocked by her change of attitude. I'm surprised she can keep things professional despite her childish personality.
"You already know the rules, but I'm going to repeat them for the new folks watching!" she announced with a smile. After that, she flies gracefully over to the right side of the stage, where a heart-shaped monitor begins to showcase the rules.
"Three participants go on a blind date with a brain they select from a secret laboratory. The only details provided are the brain's name, age, gender, and the year it was frozen. If sparks fly on the first date, they get to live together for a whole three months!" Brainy says before she flies around the left side of the stage.
"There's also a big, grand prize, but I'm sure none of the contestants are here for that." She adds, the crowd erupting in laughter once again.
"Because we believe that love is just like justice... blind!"
I roll my eyes at the cheesy line. The crowd seems to like it, judging by how loud they're laughing. Now I can't help but wonder if those people are real or not. This whole setup reminds me of those laugh tracks back in the day on TV. And how they would use the same audio over and over again for every single joke. It didn't matter if it was actually funny or not.
"Now let's meet our first contestant! She is a beautiful, young humanoid woman from Earth who just got revived a few days ago!" Brainy then looks at me as she gestures towards the center of the stage.
"I say young, but she actually comes from the year 2025! She is like a precious little fossil, isn't she?"
Ugh! Not this again!
Brainy then pauses, allowing the laughter to stop.
"Let's all give a big round of applause for AIRI OSAKI!" The small humanoid then points at me as the crowd starts clapping and cheering. I get up from the red couch and wave at the holograms in front of us.
"Let's...PICK A BRAIN... and... FALL IN LOVE!" Brainy's catchphrase is met with an even wilder eruption of applause from the public.
A catchy jingle commences, emanating from the strategically placed speakers scattered across the stage! Just when I thought it wouldn't get any cheesier than this, the giant heart screen behind us now transforms into a pulsating heart, beating and glowing like crazy.
"Ok, now let's start from the beginning," Brainy says before she waits for the crowd to stop cheering.
"Tell us about yourself, Airi."
"Hello! Thank you so much for the warm welcome!" Cheers and applause erupt from the crowd. "My name is Airi, and I'm currently 325 years old!" I pause to look at the audience."I used to own different businesses back in the day. I also did a lot of charity work that I'm very proud of." My words were met with a cheerful response from the audience.
"Not to brag, but my family was quite well known and respected in Japan at the time." Brainy couldn't help but roll her eyes. "However, now I'm currently jobless and learning how to adapt to this new reality." I then pause and glance back at the little humanoid. "And so far, I'm having fun!" I spot Naomi next to the stage giving me a thumbs up. Brainy's lips are curving upward in a smile that seems almost too perfect to be genuine.
"I'm glad to hear that. Now tell us, what are your expectations from this experience?"
"Expectations?" I pause to think. It's not like I auditioned for this dating show myself. I only agreed to it because I didn't want to go back to being a brain again. And plus, I'm kind of curious to get to know the guy who apparently spent a lot of HP on me.
"Well, I was never the type to go on blind dates, but I want to try it at least once." I admit, as the crowd cheers in response. "The men around me at the time were too stuck up or just too busy to start a serious relationship. Not to mention, I also had to watch out for those who only wanted to date me for my family's reputation and wealth." The audience boos, and I can't help but laugh in response.
"I do hope to find someone who can appreciate me for who I truly am one day." I pause and look at the crowd. "Doesn't everyone want that?" The audience cheers once again.
"I see. So you want a man to really fight for your attention, huh? Can you tell us your type?" Brainy then begins to fly around the stage. I feel my cheeks warm up at the question.
"Well, umm... I don't know." I then pause to think. "I guess he needs to be taller than me. I also like men with dark hair, flawless skin, captivating eyes, and a slim build." I pause again. "He has to be nice to people but not fake nice. Trust me, I can tell." The crowd laughs. "Hmm, what else?"
Brainy looks at me surprised for a few seconds. But she gathers herself and begins to speak. "Alright, we get it! You are a demanding lady." The crowd laughs again.
"Now I bet you're curious about the ACTUAL man who wanted to meet you, aren't you?" She then looks back at the crowd. "I'll tell you what, I'm feeling quite generous today!" The audience starts clapping and cheering as Brainy flies closer to me. "So I'm going to tell you a few things about him."
"Oh?" I didn't expect that offer from her.
"Let's see, his name is Issei, and he's a humanoid!" The crowd goes wild once again.
"Oh! And... HE'S A MORON FOR SPENDING SO MANY HUMANITY POINTS ON A SPOILED BRAT LIKE YOU!
"Huh?"
"CUT! CUT! CUT!"
Naomi yells from the edge of the stage. At that moment, all the cameras began to descend towards the basement floor while the audience made out of holograms started to vanish one by one.
