Chapter 11:

An Uninvited Guest

Colorful Gray World Vol. 1

"This will be our first time inside your house!"

Ko and Masato made a big thing from our hangout at my house.

"Please, keep your expectations low... My house is currently like a dumpster..."

I would usually be against the idea, but we are all in this game. We have to work together to win.

I unlocked the door to my house and opened it.

"Oh come on! It can't be that-"

Masato stopped mid-sentence at the smell of trash. Ko immediately ran out.

"Hah, hah..."

They were both exaggerating the smell, but were right.

I seriously need to clean up this mess.

"How do you live in here?!"

Ko was the first one to ask.

"Easily, as I'm used to it."

"We must clean this place later, since we have more important matters."

Masato seemed to get used to the smell, as he was now speaking normally.

Masato and I looked around my house for the clue, while Ko tried to enter without immediately running out for fresh air.

When we entered my room, a girl with purple hair, and blue eyes, was sitting on my bed.

"Eh?! Who are you?! What are you doing here?!"

Walking towards her, I yelled.

 She looked up at me.

"Good afternoon. My name is Koyama Masami. I'm the spy Korosu was talking about."

After the introduction, she bowed.

"Ah... So, you're going to watch us?"

"Indeed. I was given a document that was meant for you."

She said, with an emotionless voice, as she stretched out her hand with the folder.

What happened to her to be like this?!

I slowly grab the folder out of her hands.

"Thanks..."

"There's nothing to be thanking me for."

Done with our conversation, Masami headed out of my bedroom, towards the spare bedroom I had.

Seeing this, I head to the room.

"What are you doing in my guest bedroom?!"

The door opened, revealing Masami.

"I will be staying here."

"Huh?!"

Now Masato was as surprised as me.

"Why?!"

"I have no other place, and I have to keep a close watch on you. Korosu told me that if you tried to stop me somehow, I should press this button."

She held up a red button.

"And the city will fall from the sky."

Sweat was dripping off my hands.

"Okay! Good thing you told me!"

With that, she closed the door.

"So, shall we get to it?"

Masato said enthusiastically.

"Hey! What about me?!"

Ko shouted from the entrance.

"Okay! We're going to the local park!"

"Yay! Thanks, Noboru!"

Leaving my house, I and Masato told Ko about Masami.

"Eh?! Why did you allow her to be in your house?!"

"There was no other way."

A lightbulb seemed to pop up above Masato's head, as he made a devious smirk.

"What is it, Ko? Are you jealous?"

Saying that Masato declared his death sentence, as Ko's face turned to one of anger.

"I'm not! Who would like to sleep in that dirty place?!"

I flinched at her words.

"No! I'm sorry Noboru! I didn't mean it like that!"

"I'll just clean it up..."

Arriving at the park, we walk up to an abandoned alleyway.

"Why is this park built near this alleyway?!"

"I don't know, Masato. They probably ran out of money and space..."

"Okay, can we focus, you two? Please?"

They both nod.

"Alright, let's see what he gave us..."

Opening the folder, a lot of holographic documents with numbers on them popped up.

"Look! This one isn't numbered. "The numbers represent in which order you should solve clues." it says."

Looking through them, I finally found the one with "Clue #1" in the center of the document.

"A beast, experiment, tunnels."

"What does that mean, Noboru?!"

"I don't know, Masato... I am not the internet search engine!"

Silence overtook us, as we all got our handphones out to search.

We split our way toward our homes, as we couldn't find anything for 30 minutes, and it was getting late.

When I arrived home, Masami was going through my fridge.

"Hey! That's my food!"

"I'm deeply sorry. I was hungry, and I hadn't brought anything with me."

She bowed in the same manner as before.

"Ah... It's fine... We could share."

Her head shot up.

"Really?"

"Yeah, I think I'll have enough for us."

Seemingly touched, her face looked shocked.

"Thank you. You're the first generous person I met in my life."

Her statement caught me off guard.

"Has no one been kind to you before?"

"No, everyone treats me as I should be treated. As a weapon."

That left me feeling sad for her.

"Didn't your parents love you?"

"No, I was an orphan. The organization adopted me."

"The Numbers?"

"Correct."

"Could you tell me about them?"

"No, that information is confidential."

"Well, at least I tried."

I walked to my room and got my clothes for sleep.

"I'm going to use the bathroom!"

I wanted to warn Masami.

"If I may ask, why are you acting friendly towards me?"

"I don't want to get in your way, 'cause of..."

I motion toward the button in her pocket.

"Oh, there's no need to worry. I won't use it if it isn't necessary. Just solve the clues, and I won't have a reason to press the button."

"Okay..."

After that, I showered and went to lie in bed. I spent the next few hours rolling around.

"Argh..."

My head felt like someone stabbed it.

"Well, guess there's no sleeping tonight."

Getting up, I turned on the holographic television and scrolled to the movie channel.

"It's all replays..."

While scrolling through channels, I heard footsteps.

When I looked at the doorway, I jumped.

"AH! Why are you up at..."

I look at the alarm.

"2:58 AM, Masami?!"

Masami was hiding behind the corner of my door, with her head sticking out from the side.

"My job is to keep my eyes on you."

"But you shouldn't ignore your sleeping hours!"

"I will go to sleep when you do. I set a sensor that creates a loud sound if you tried to walk by me, while I'm asleep."

"And you'd press the button?"

"Correct."

"Fine, I'll try to get some sleep."

Turning off the holographic television, I lay down.

"Hey, Masami?"

"Yes?"

"Try to express yourself more."

"What do you mean?"

"Try to act on emotions more. Like when I shared my food."

There was silence for a while.

"Please, try not to interact with me much. Pretend that I'm not here, while I keep a watch on you."

Ah, these words are all too familiar to me...

With that, I fell asleep.
