Chapter 7:
Written in the Stars
He looked up at the huge building Emma lived in. She lived on the 23rd floor, he had never flown that high. Nyco wasn’t particularly scared of heights, but he was scared he would crash into a bird or that an airstream may throw him off balance. He thought about taking the elevator, but that way he may bump into Emma’s dad, plus he knew he had cameras at the front door, so if he did go through the normal way, he would 100% get in trouble. Mr. Litdawn was very clear of not wanting him seeing his daughter anymore. He compared the risk of flying that high and dealing with her dad and flying was significantly less scary.
He got into position and put on the flying goggles he had resting on his neck like a necklace. When he felt ready, he activated the Rocket Boots by pushing the button on the side of his right index finger. Thinking that the closer he was to the wall the safer it would be, Nyco started going upwards very slowly while leaning on the wall with his hand from time to time in order to maintain balance.
On the 5th floor, a fly flew right beside his ear when it was trying to get into a house. Hearing it so close gave him a little jumpscare. “Ufff, don’t scare me like that. I thought you were a bee” he laughed.
He came across a cat on the 12th floor that started meowing at him. He told the small black kitten to shush so his owners wouldn’t come and check what was outside their window.
A sudden urge to look down came to him, he wasn’t sure if it would be counterproductive or not. He was already feeling a bit scared being so high up but he had never felt more like a cat in his life, he was too curious. Nyco looked down. He saw the small cars and people on the streets and they looked like toy models. The fact that there was nothing under him that could hold him if the boots decided to stop working made his knees weak. He lost his balance and almost smashed into someone’s window, but fortunately he calmed down and steadied his feet.
When he finally got to the 23rd floor. He opened his hand so the boots would maintain him in place. He looked inside but there was nobody there. The lights were off so he couldn’t see much of what was inside. He put his head to the window and scanned the room. “Mmmm, I don’t think this is her room. It’s too childish for her… Mmmm, oh no!”.
A small kid was taking a nap when a noise coming from his window woke him up. He rubbed his eyes and saw a floating head looking at him. He screamed like a lamb and ran to his parents room.
Nyco knew the little kid’s parents would come any second so he flew away from the window and kept searching for Emma’s room.
He wasn’t far off, just two windows to the right and he finally found her room. He was going to knock on the window so she would let him in but what he found made him think otherwise. His childhood friend was dancing around in the room in the way you only do when you think no one is watching you. She moved her arms and hips to a song he had never heard before. She even jumped on her bed for a while, feeling the music down to her bones. He had only seen this goofy side of her when they were little, when you don’t care what others think. He was not going to deprive himself of that moment. A small smile formed without him noticing. His heart also bumped a little faster. “God, she is so cute!” he thought. “It’s a shame that I’m… not going to see this side of her again… You have to cut ties with her Nyco. For her own good. Geesh I really don’t want to…”, he thought.
Emma was dancing happily, thinking about what her friends had said. She had never seen Nyco make that face before and if it really was because of her…
She moved around while thinking of a way she could catch him looking at her that way, not knowing that if she had looked out the window a few seconds earlier she would have seen it live.
When the song ended, so did the dancing. She turned the music box off and stopped to catch her breath. She had been dancing for a while and was sweating. Emma decided she would take a shower now in her own private bathroom and after that, get into her pajamas, it was around 20:43 so AI-Juliet would probably have dinner ready in about 45 minutes. She wiped the sweat in her forehead and took off her shoes. She then took off her shirt and started taking her skirt off too.
Nyco was shocked at the sight. “Nonono, I can’t watch this” he panicked. He quickly moved away from the window and closed his eyes in order to not see her strip down in front of him. The feeling of guilt and the panic of her finding him out made him lose his balance. He almost fell backwards but he ended up putting his feet back in order to go forward. That did stop him from falling down, but in hindsight, he would have much rather fallen down a few floors. Preventing himself from falling backwards made him move forward, making him smack his face in the window. Even with that, he didn’t open his eyes.
Emma had her skirt down her knees when she heard something bang the window. She looked up expecting a bird or something but what she found was a lot worse. Her longtime friend and crush was on her window peeping at her as she undressed. She let out a big scream and hurried to the bathroom to hide from his gaze. The scream alarmed Nyco, making him open his eyes again as a reflex. He only glazed at her behind for a second before she went into the bathroom, but the image made him blush.
He started apologizing hoping she could hear him but she didn’t come out of the bathroom. The feeling of guilt made him take out his E-Cube in order to call her. This situation was something he needed to clear up or she would hate him forever. “You are such an idiot, Nyco” he told himself.
Emma was hiding in the bathroom with a feeling of embarrassment and anger that she couldn’t understand. “Oh no noooo!! Nyco just saw me in my underwear. This is so embarrassing and awkward. What was he doing on the window!! I’m going to teach him a lesson when I get a hold of him!! But he just saw me… AAAAAH”. All these thoughts were going through her head at the same time. A call on her E-Cube made her break out from that spiral. It was Nyco´s personalized ringtone so she knew it was him calling. Emma wrapped herself in a bathrobe and answered the call.
-I’m so sorry, Emma. I didn’t mean to…
-Are you still outside?-, she asked, interrupting him.
-...Emm, yeah, but I’m not near your window so I'm not seeing anything-, he assured her.
-I’m going to open the window, get inside!-, she ordered
The call ended right after without letting Nyco answer. “She is pissed from here to Mars… Today is definitely not my lucky day” lamented poor Nyco. “What a way to ruin all these years of friendship, you knucklehead!”.
He saw the window open from afar and slowly went in. They boy landed on his friend's bedroom floor. Nyco and Emma’s eyes were like magnets of different polarity, none of them could look at each other in the eyes. An awkward silence filled the room. Nyco swallowed and cleared his throat.
-Ok. Let me start by saying that this was just a little misunderstanding. I didn’t mean to see you in your… Ahem, let me try again… All I wanted was to explain what happened todaaaaaAAAA A AAAA I’M SORRY-, Nyco jelled. Emma did not let him finish his sentence, she approached him with such fury in her eyes that made Nyco think of an angry bull in children’s cartoons, all that was missing was steam coming from her nose. She pulled his goggles down from his face, grabbed his ear and twisted it as she did when they were kids.
-You are going to have to explain everything, step by step, what made you think it was a good idea to fly up to the 23rd floor, with how dangerous that is, and spy on me from outside the window. And it better be convincing or your ear is going to be so swollen everyone will think you have some elephant DNA in you. Do you understand?-, she asked, twisting the ear a little bit more.
-AAAAaaa Yes ma’am.
