Chapter 15:
Written in the Stars
“Calm down you idiot!! Don’t think about how she is wrapped all over you. Think about something else. Oh, I know. I’ll name all the stars I can remember. Let’s see… Absolutno, Copernicus, Nashira…” listed the nervous boy in his head trying to calm himself.
His hands started sweating due to the situation. Emma wasn’t doing any better, embracing the boy she liked that way was not something she was prepared for. She needed to get this situation over as soon as possible or her heart would shoot right out of her chest.
-Can we… go now?-, Emma asked.
-Misam and Polaris…-, murmured Nyco.
-What?
-Oh sorry. You were saying?-, he asked
-Are you ready to leave?-, asked the embarrassed girl.
-Yes… Yes! Hold on!
Nyco pressed the button on his right glove with his thumb and the boots lifted from the floor. Not used to all the extra weight, it took him a few seconds to stabilize himself.
-Am I too heavy?-, she worried.
-Ha!… If there’s one thing I know about girls, it’s that that is a trick question-, he joked to normalize the situation.
-You dummy-, she giggled, thanking him for breaking the ice.
-You are fine. Ok, now close your eyes-, he advised.
-Done-. Emma announced.
He slowly flew out the window making sure not to make any abrupt movements that could scare her flying partner. When the outside breeze tousled her hair she held onto his back even tighter. “Rana, Tuiren… Wezen…” Nyco mumbled.
As her longlife friend and current backpack requested, Nyco warned her that he would start accelerating. After hearing her agreement, he slid the button upwards until it went at full speed. The plan was to fly high enough that it would be hard for pedestrians to spot them.
At first he thought about not flying over the city, going through the city outskirts as he did before was the safest bet, but there’s no way they could make it in time that way, so he had to discard that option. They had to risk being seen.
Nyco made sure to use secondary streets in order to escape as many people’s gaze as possible. If anyone reported someone flying in the city with Rocket Boots, they would send a police officer after them in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, his plan didn’t work, a couple of people spotted them from their window and called the police when they were 10 minutes away from their school. A cop riding a flying motorbike activated his siren to warn them of his presence and persuade them to stop.
It didn’t work.
-Mars manure!! Someone reported us! If I ever found out who it was…-, Nyco complained
-What do we do now?!! If he catches us, I’m definitely going to be late for school!!-, she cried. -Wait, that's not the worst part. We’ll probably get expelled from school. Oh-my-god Oh-my-god Nyco do something!!
-Ok ok, let me think!-, he asked.
-Why did I agree to go with you?! This was such a stupid plan!!
-Hey, this was your stupid plan-, the boy pointed out.
-Well… you should have told me it was a stupid idea. Stupid!
-Hey, don’t call me “stupid”, stupid!-, he countered. -Ouch! Hey, don’t pinch me when I’m flying.
The officer turned his speakers on as he got closer to them.
-Stop for your own good. It’s dangerous to fly in the city. Especially this high-, demanded the officer.
-If I get expelled, my father is going to kill me!-, Emma told Nyco, ignoring the officer.
-Doubt it. But he will kill me. If they catch us, just say that I kidnapped you or something.
-That’s not going to work. They’ll figure out we know each other. The police aren’t as stupid as we are. Oh God, please help us.
-He probably has better things to do, but don’t worry, I have an idea-, he announced.
-What idea?!!
-It’s better that I don’t tell you. You are not going to like it. Just keep your eyes closed and hold on!-, he said as he made a quick turn to the right.
-NycoooooOOOOOOO-, Emma shouted.
The policeman got tired of following them around and threatened to use force. He accelerated and looked at them to see what he was dealing with. Since the girl had her face pressed onto the boy’s back he could not see her factions. The boy on the other hand, had short hair up to his ears, had a bumpy nose and was muscular. He could tell they were teenagers. The boy turned his face to look him in the eye and spelled “sorry”.
They did not seem to be the dangerous type, just a couple of punks that thought breaking the rules was cool. Taking them to the police station and contacting their parents would surely make them reconsider.
The little brat suddenly stopped in mid air, making the officer have to circle around them.
-What are you doing up here?! You know you can’t fly with those boots in the city. It’s dangerous-, scolded the officer. They could not see his face as he was wearing the reglementary white and black helmet that helped them in their investigations. Right now he was scanning their clothes to see if they had any weapons. All they had were two empty Warpys and two E-Cubes.
-Why are you stopping, you dummy?-, whispered the girl thinking the officer couldn’t hear her.
-Shush. I got this-, the boy whispered back. -Excuse me officer. We just wanted to feel the fresh air in our heads, you know? To get out of the boring monotony of everyday life-, the cocky boy explained to the policeman
-Really? ‘Cause she doesn’t seem to be enjoying your little charade-, he countered.
-Nah but that’s only because she is scared because we bumped into you. Just tell her that we’ll go with a warning and see how she brightens up-, Nyco stated.
-Ooooh boy. I’m afraid that’s not going to happen. Come down with me so you can give me your E-C for identification-, ordered the pissed policeman.
-... Yeah. That’s what I thought… Sorry about this Em-, the kid stated.
-It 's ok. We’ll figure it out later. Just go dooooOOOOOAAAAAAA-, she screamed.
The rebellious kid had turned his boots off and was now free falling into the flying cars that were below them. Emma felt her stomach go up because of the fall. She thanked the creator that she hadn’t eaten anything that morning.
The officer cursed the kid. That punk was determined to make his day more challenging than necessary. He took out his pistol and pointed downwards to them. The camera inside his helmet zoomed in on the target and calculated the exact place he had to shoot. A red dot appeared in his line of vision and he took the shot.
