Chapter 14:

Paradise Rodent

SEIKE

‘For all that I could remember there was always something off about me.’

Tokyo Japan 3836.

A young Rei aged around 16 years old glared blankly with wide blue eyes of a tropical bright ocean. A short black frizzy hair that looked like messy unkempt bed hair. An appearance that clashed with his cleanly worn buttoned up black school uniform.

He walked aimlessly through the busy neon lit street of Tokyo. He was like a salmon swimming up river with a sea of people that moved around to avoid him.

‘A rodent living in paradise.’

Rei stopped in the middle of the street with a doll-like face that lacked any clear expressions. His face was bruised with lips that were bloodied.

‘Anabhraka represents a paradise from the old world… free from strife and war.’

***

“Ahh!”

Rei stumbled down with his face hitting the pavement as he was struck by a punch from a fellow student. He had always felt that people despised how robotic he was, the crass inhuman demeanour that he often took.

“Look at me! Come on you little runt… what you think you're better than me!”

***

Rei slumped himself over a drain of a dingy bathroom sink. The constant running water reverberated throughout the dimly lit space like white noise. His right hand was placed under the faucet as cold water flowed endlessly wrapping around like a translucent bracelet.

Rei slowly looked towards the mirror above and saw in the reflection his face. A battered visage of pain and most of all a look of content.

‘A world free from strife.’

***

‘A paradise of perfect individuals not born but created to be above all other humans… only to devolve into the future glimpse of mankind's hubris.’

Rei stood atop a tall point that overlooked the grand neon city below. A river of orange lights raced below as the full extent of the rat race below revealed itself. He stood at the edge of the building with strong winds that battered his hair and school jacket that swayed viciously around.

‘Humans are monsters no matter the form they take.’

The landscape below morphed as he looked down, tempting him to walk further into the abyss below.

‘If we are created then why was I made this way? These imperfections… why? Why mother, why did you make us different and fallible? How are we meant to be above humans when all we do is just poor mimicry!’

‘I am incomplete….’

Rei was startled by a voice that appeared in the back of his mind. His legs slipped as he stumbled down only catching his fall with one arm.

“Ahh!!!”

His arm gripped the small ledge for dear life as he began to pull himself up. He sat himself on the edge with heavy breaths and cold sweat that ran down his spine.

“Mother is that you?”

***

General Vladis of the REC stood within a glass observation tower filled with control consoles and workers who manned them. Vladis smoked a cigar while the rising sun outside illuminated his white hair with a soft yellow and pink hue. The light from the sun casted soft jagged shadows upon a metallic landscape of several thousand hexagonal holes that stretched as far as the eye could see.

Vladis tapped on an electronic bracelet as a voice was heard through the communication device in his ear.

“General, all loose ends have been tied. The president of the REC has just been arrested for corruption and ties to The Holy Empire of Russia. We have to move fast; it won't be long before they catch on.”

“...”

“General? Come in, do you hear me?”

“Oh… Right, I was daydreaming, sorry. Reminiscing about old times… and the path it took to finally get here. Soon. Soon.”

“Reminisce, later we got work to do.”

“Always straight and narrow General Vladis. Let us begin. You are clear to launch the Arc Relays.”

General Vladis turned his head around and nodded to one of his subordinates.

“Roger! Commencing launch sequence.”

General Vladis twisted a key into the console which unlocked a glass lid revealing a big red button.

*Alarm Alarm Alarm Alarm*

Red lights flashed all around the launch site as the metal hatch of the silos began to slowly open.

“Launch ready at your command sir!”

Vladis slammed the big red button with his fist.

“For the future of Humanity!”

*sstssss*

*Boom*

*Woooosh*

The quiet morning bliss was filled with the hellish screams of wailing rocket engines that propelled thousands of rockets out of their hole with each being bigger than the observation tower that commanded them. In the distance these rockets bellowed out a heavy sea of fog that covered the entire landscape.

***

Deep within a bleak war-torn battlefield Green REC drones clashed with the swarm of silver drones from the Imperial forces. They exchanged fire back and forth as a giant graveyard of broken machinery piled up.

“Command, come in! What is happening? We are seeing massive launches of ICBMS from home and all our colonies!... Command. Command… Dammit it's cold.”

An officer in green REC uniform desperately called from inside his command Mech. A slow lumbering bunker of four legs and pure hard steel with no weapons built in.

“Shit! Everythings went dark. What the hell is going on!”

“Are we expecting a nuclear exchange?”

“I hope not but I don’t know what else to do–”

Another officer chimed in the comms channel. His voice is in a frantic disarray.

“The… They’ve gone rogue! I repeat! The Anabhrakians have gone rogue! They are slaughtering all my units… Holy shit it's above my bunker oh god no—”

*ssssssssss*

The officer’s voice was suddenly cut as plain static replaced his voice.

“Come in! Markus! Markus! MARKUS!”

***

The bright blue planet that is Earth sat blanketed by the black void of space. A tranquil blue marble that was quickly being populated by thousands of rockets that rose from its surface.

These rockets stopped in low orbit not going high enough to reach the outer clusters of satellites, space stations and space junks.

*Click*

*Sttsssss*

The rockets jettisoned their fuels as it opened to reveal a green diamond shaped object that bloomed outwards in an upside-down lily flower.

The blue planet was now encased in a hollow cage that spanned all around.

***

Rei opened his eyes to see the grand neon city of Tokyo below as he sat atop a tall point. The city was under the bright day time sun with lights that laid dormant waiting for the wild nights ahead.

He casually licked a lollypop with a smile on his face.

"Peace on Earth."
