Chapter 3:

Pursuit in the City’s Labyrinth

The Exiled Explorer

The alarm blared incessantly, echoing through the palace corridors. William could feel the tension enveloping the room. Each step felt heavier as his chest raced in rhythm with his labored breaths.

Khadija stood firm, her face resolute, as though she had already issued orders in her mind.

"To the laboratory. Now," Khadija commanded, her gaze locking onto Garron and Alya.

Without a word, Garron moved swiftly, taking the lead. Alya, usually calm and composed, now seemed impatient, her eyes darting around as if trying to decipher the situation.

William tried not to show his unease, attempting to act as though none of this concerned him. Yet, his mind refused to stay still. The alarm was anything but ordinary. Perhaps there was a problem with the Black Luminaris, or... something even greater was targeting them.

"We need to find out what's happening," William said calmly, following Khadija and the others. But his heart grew increasingly anxious. He could no longer ignore the feeling that he was caught in a game far more complex than he had anticipated.

It seemed he wasn’t as skilled at pretending indifference as he thought.

---

Khadija strode briskly, guiding William through the long corridors leading to the massive doors separating the palace’s main hall from the Luminaris laboratory. The atmosphere grew more oppressive. Every palace guard appeared focused, alert, with a trace of unease in the air. The tension was palpable.

"Everything will be fine," Khadija said, glancing at William as if reading the worry on his face. "But you must stay cautious. This isn't just about the Luminaris. There's something bigger at play."

William stared at her. "What do you mean?" He couldn’t suppress his curiosity. "What’s really going on here?" he added.

Khadija paused briefly, her gaze deep as she looked at William. "You’re starting to understand, aren’t you? The Black Luminaris isn’t just a regular energy technology. It can destroy more than just the physical, William. It can corrupt minds as well."

A wave of unease washed over William. "What do you mean by corrupting minds?"

Alya, walking behind them, interjected, "Those exposed to the Black Luminaris for too long can lose control over themselves. Some say it can alter the way people think—or even turn them into... tools." Alya explained matter-of-factly.

William froze momentarily, his eyes fixed on Alya, who had just revealed this shocking detail. "You… you’re saying it can change humans?" he asked hesitantly, more to himself than to them.

"Yes," Alya replied curtly, her face devoid of sympathy. "That’s why we must be cautious. Not everyone here can be trusted, and even Princess Khadija… I’m not sure what she’s planning with all of this."

Khadija didn’t respond. She continued toward the laboratory, and William could feel the weight of the atmosphere intensifying as they neared their destination. Questions swirled in his mind. The tension thickened.

---

When they arrived at the large laboratory doors, Khadija stopped and nodded to the two guards standing by. The guards opened the doors with careful precision. As they stepped into the main room, William froze in his tracks, stunned by the scene before him.

The room was filled with Luminaris crystals of various sizes. Some were mounted on massive machines that channeled energy throughout the city. However, one corner of the room stood out. It seized William’s attention completely—a massive black crystal, human-sized, mounted at the center, connected to intricate devices William struggled to comprehend.

What on earth was that?

"This is the core of it all," Khadija said in a flat tone. "The Black Luminaris. A source of energy that should never have existed."

Alya examined it closely, her face tense. "We don’t know what could happen if we don’t stop this soon."

Before they could act, the laboratory doors burst open with a loud bang. A man in a black uniform bearing the royal emblem entered, his face grave.

"Your Highness, there’s been an intrusion at the city’s outer perimeter," the man announced urgently. "We must relocate the Black Luminaris immediately. Our security is compromised."

Khadija stared at the man, her gaze piercing. "Who’s behind it?" she asked, her voice low but commanding.

The man exhaled, reluctant to divulge the information. "We don’t know. However, there are reports of foreign troops outside the city, and we’ve detected… unusual energy readings."

William felt his unease shift into full alertness. This wasn’t just about the Black Luminaris anymore. Something far greater—and more dangerous—was approaching. Everyone appeared on edge.

"Very well," Khadija said firmly, "we’ll proceed with Plan B. If anyone tries to stop us, we’ll face them together!"

William looked at them all, realizing their journey was only beginning. And far more perilous challenges lay ahead, waiting to unfold.
