Chapter 17:
Shadowfront
Twilight moved through the base with cold efficiency, their every step driven by the need to retake what had been stolen from them. The weight of Victor’s death still pressed on them, but for Axon, it was a personal vendetta. Her eyes blazed with rage, and she knew there would be no rest until 1MIN paid for what he had done.
“We finish this today,” she growled, her voice low but resolute.
Panzer led the charge, his prosthetic limbs clicking as they moved, the heavy rifle in his hands a deadly extension of his body. At first, they caught 1MIN’s forces off guard. Twilight was swift, their tactics efficient, the element of surprise working in their favor. Each shot Panzer fired was a death sentence for the enemy, his aim impeccable, each movement precise.
But as Twilight advanced deeper into the base, the tide of the battle began to shift. 1MIN’s loyalists quickly reorganized, responding to the assault with ruthless efficiency. They had been expecting them, and the initial chaos faded into a series of hard-fought skirmishes. Twilight was no longer operating with the element of surprise.
Still, they held their ground. Panzer’s rifle roared as he pushed forward, mowing down soldiers one by one, but the sheer numbers of their enemies were beginning to overwhelm them. Twilight’s progress slowed, and the weight of the battle started to wear on them.
“Panzer, we need to fall back!” Karl called out, keeping an eye on their flank.
But Panzer shook his head, determination etched across his face. “We press forward. I’m not letting them take this base.”
It wasn’t long before they were outnumbered, surrounded on all sides by enemy soldiers. The walls seemed to close in around them. Panzer’s rifle began to overheat from the constant fire, and Twilight was forced into cover. Their options were dwindling, and in that moment, the trap was set.
The explosion came from nowhere. A blast rocked the building, the force of it sending Panzer flying into a nearby wall. The deafening sound was followed by an almost painful ringing in his ears. His body slammed against the stone, and his rifle was torn from his hands. The explosion had torn the ground out from under them, throwing him into the heart of an ambush. He could hear the shouts of enemy soldiers, but his vision was blurry, his body heavy with pain.
As his senses cleared, he realized where he had ended up, a small room, now filled with soldiers closing in on him. His body ached with every movement, but his instincts didn’t let him fall. Panzer gritted his teeth, anger fueling his every breath as he pushed himself off the floor. His rifle was gone, and his body screamed in protest, but there was no other choice.
With a roar, Panzer lunged at the nearest soldier, his metal prosthetics smashing through armor and bone alike. His hands, bloodied and broken, worked with a ferocity that only those facing death could understand. Each strike was a statement, each kill a defiance against his inevitable fate.
Soldier after soldier fell, but the numbers didn’t stop. The room began to blur around him, the sound of his own heartbeat thumping in his ears. His punches grew weaker, but he didn’t stop. He couldn’t. As the last soldier dropped to the floor, Panzer collapsed, unable to rise any longer. Bloodied, battered, and near death, his last breath was a vow of vengeance as he fell into unconsciousness, his body giving out completely.
Twilight’s remaining members Axon, Karl, and Spectral kept pushing forward, supporting Panzer until the explosion severed their connection to him. For a brief moment, they tried to regroup, to find Panzer.
“We have to get to him!” Axon shouted, pushing through the growing chaos. “Panzer’s not dead. He’s still fighting.”
Karl’s eyes scanned the battlefield, his face set in a grim line. “We’ll find him, Axon. But we can’t afford to let our focus slip. Not now.”
Despite their desperate search, they couldn’t locate Panzer. It was as if he had vanished into the smoke and dust of the explosion. And yet, as the minutes passed, they knew their time was running out. 1MIN would not allow them to regroup without pushing his advantage.
Then, it happened. A break in the chaos.
“Panzer’s gone,” Spectral said softly, his face pale as he stared at his interface. “We’ve lost him.”
Axon’s eyes widened in shock, her body momentarily freezing. The thought that Panzer have been killed hit her like a blow to the chest. She shook her head, anger rising. *No. Not Panzer. Not now.*
“We need to finish this,” Axon muttered, her voice strained with grief and fury.
By then, only a handful of 1MIN’s forces remained, and the fight was reaching its climax. 1MIN himself, ever the tactician, had kept his distance, waiting, watching, calculating. But now, with his loyal soldiers thinned out and the battle turning in Twilight’s favor, 1MIN made his move.
He stepped into the fray, his weapon raised, his eyes burning with a feverish intensity. He wasn’t going to let the chance slip away. His enemies were close, and they were vulnerable.
Axon’s heart pounded as she saw him, 1MIN was finally in the fight, his twisted resolve written across his face.
The two sides collided once again. But as Twilight’s forces focused on the few remaining enemies, their attention was split between 1MIN and the rest. His presence shifted the dynamic, making the stakes higher.
Axon and Karl found themselves face-to-face with him. Their weapons raised, their posture set, ready for what was to come.
As 1MIN faced off with them, his gaze locked onto Karl, the rage in his eyes unmistakable. But just as the moment reached its boiling point, something happened that made his delusion solidify.
Without hesitation, Axon moved to protect Karl. As 1MIN raised his weapon and fired, Axon threw herself in front of Karl, taking the shot herself.
“Don’t you dare,” she snarled, her voice gritted with fury.
Karl shouted her name, but Axon didn’t falter. She raised her own weapon and fired, a sharp crack filling the air as the bullet struck 1MIN in the neck. He staggered back, his grin faltering for a brief moment.
But 1MIN’s mind was already twisting, the confusion and madness of the moment fueling his delusions. He barely noticed the blood dripping from his wound as he stared at the scene unfolding before him.
His thoughts spiraled, his grief and anger clouding his judgment, focusing all his fury on Karl. “It was you, you were the one holding him back!” 1MIN’s voice cracked with rage. “You held her back, just like you did with Victor! "
“You made him weak! You failed him!” 1MIN howled, his voice trembling with fury, as if he were pleading for validation. “You were the one who betrayed him, YOU, not me!”
Axon’s heart pounded in her chest, but her expression was cold, resolute. She raised her voice, her words sharp and unwavering. “You’re the one who killed him, 1MIN. You’re the one who betrayed us all.”
In that moment, as she stared down at 1MIN, the weight of all their losses seemed to hang in the air, and the taste of vengeance lingered on her tongue.
With a final defiant snarl, 1MIN collapsed to the ground, his breath ragged, his body twitching in the grips of his fevered delusion. His eyes, wide with rage, flickered with a twisted sense of triumph. He had found his scapegoat, the one person he could blame for Victor’s death.
Axon’s chest heaved, her arm still bleeding from the bullet wound, but she moved closer to finish it. Her steps were measured, determined, there would be no hesitation now. No more doubts. She had already sacrificed too much.
