Chapter 40:

Burn Baby Burn

Bolts of electricity continually crashed down around Blitz, who was too busy trying to dodge attacks he couldn’t see coming than to try and avoid the electric fallout. The natural consequence of this was Blitz having the searing pain of the violet bolts burning into his skin whenever he tried to dodge Droite’s kicks. With his metal legs, Droite’s attacks had been dangerous enough, but the power of his electric core made them much more deadly. Especially considering the speed at which he was moving.

“What’s wrong Blitz? Having trouble?” The devilish voice emanated throughout the room, bouncing off the walls much like the streak of purple that rained electricity down on Blitz. “If you’ve already lost hope, might as well just sit still and let me finish you off already!” He screeched, ricocheting off the walls until he hit Blitz in the side and sent him flying yet again.

Trying to minimize any further damage as much possible, Blitz scampered up to his knees and bent over, shielding his head. Before long, he felt Droite take advantage of the situation and hammer into his back with repeated strikes driving him into the ground. With every blunt attack, he winced in pain as he tried to throw together a semblance of a plan.

Have I lost hope? Is there nothing left for me? Blitz flexed the fingers of his hands, remembering how he felt when bound in chains. The fact that I can even fight back shows I have friends who are risking it all to save me… If I don’t give my all to make their efforts pay off, what kind of friend am I? Thinking to Droite’s attack pattern, Blitz tried to formulate a plan of some sort. What can I exploit? He played back images and sensations of pain in his mind, trying to pinpoint a fatal weakness. His back, his side, his legs. As he remembered each hit he had taken, an idea came to his head. But, once I do that, how do I… His eyes turned downward at the mace beneath him. With that, he had the cards for his final gambit in hand, all he had to do was play them. Plus, to signal the start of his play, Droite had gotten sick of hammering at the curled up boy and came in with an attack from the side, giving Blitz the familiar treatment of skipping across the floor.

“You really are too resilient for your own good… Just keel over and let your suffering end. You know you can’t win already! You’re a dirty criminal with no home to go back to anyways!” Droite’s words dug deeper than any of his attacks from before had.

In response, Blitz slowly shambled up from the floor, swaying ever so slightly and falling down a bit once he stood up, emphasizing a pain in his left leg, holding it with one hand. “You’re wrong… Droite… I do have a place to return to.” Blitz let his words out slowly, much in contrast to the speed who he was addressing was moving. “Home is just wherever you have people to engrave into your soul.” Blitz thought back to the piece of advice Gauche had given him all those years ago, smirking at the thought. “I have friends worth doing that with now, and…”

Without letting him finish, the purple streak charged at Blitz with the sound of thunder and a crazed man shouting “Shut up!” However, the streak did not connect with Blitz this time. The attack which Droite aimed at Blitz’s side to topple him over by exploiting his bad leg was completely stopped by the force of Blitz’s flame core mace, which had hit into Droite’s gut and turned all of his speed against him. He was bashed into the ground with all of his kinetic energy, dazing him enough to prevent an immediate recovery.

“Whether you like it or not, Droite,” Blitz continued his statement which his former butler had tried to interrupt. “Gauche, Cora, and even you were engraved in my soul back in my old home. That’s why I could tell exactly what you were going to do. All I had to do was fake an injury and your attack was easy to read.” He looked down at the battered man, who was already moving his arms trying to raise himself out of the indent he found himself in.

Droite spat blood through cracked teeth. “Y-You..! Even if you stop me for a moment, I just have to get running again so I—“

“Exactly, you could recover easily.” Blitz spoke matter-of-factly. “Which is why I have to make sure you don’t get back up.” Blitz drove his mace into Droite’s chest, heating up the head of his weapon as it tore through Droite’s uniform and began to sear his skin. At the hint of pain, he began pushing himself up with his metallic legs.

“That’s not enough, Blitz! You need a lot more than that to—“

“You’re right.” He didn’t let him finish yet again, as he reached into his mace and ripped his flame core out of the center of the weapon. The orange glow of the mace head began to fade, but it was now localized entirely within the core itself. “An armament flame core with nowhere to send its flames after its last command before being separated was to keep increasing its output. Without the limiters in the mace itself, what do you think will happen?”

The lowly ex-butler squealed in fear as Blitz drove the core with his right hand into the legs Droite was so proud of. As he tried to claw himself free, he found himself crushed under the weight of Blitz and his spent mace head, his legs losing their feeling and function. The core had gotten so hot that the legs had begun wilting, metal dripping off as liquid.

“Y-You’re insane! B-Blitz! You’ll kill yourself!” Droite threw his arms around in a pathetic display of desperation, with his suppressor smiling gleefully through the pain of his right hand being seared as adrenaline rushed through him. To Droite especially, the smile Blitz wore looked as if the face of the devil himself.

“You should rejoice, Droite. You’ll finally be able to join your brother!” Blitz’s demonic smile suddenly changed to one of lament, yet satisfaction. “And I’ll finally rid myself of this hand… the hand that killed Gauche… By killing the one who put him in harm’s way.” He embraced the feeling of his roasting flesh as he felt skin peeling off and liquid metal clinging to it. “Now, I never have to kill again.” Blitz drew his hand out of the half melted legs, sending red-hot drops of steel flying around the room. His hand still held the misshapen object which once was his flame core, which started flowing out of his palm and onto the chest of Droite.

The butler felt time slow around him. The pain of having his legs melted off of his body was enough, but now he saw metal drops falling slowly like tears of the devil beckoning him to hell.

This brat… is going to kill me?! No, I won’t let him! Not him! Droite’s mind raced as death’s scythe approached his neck. Collecting the last fragments of willpower he still had, Drotie let out a scream as he sent a blast of electricity around him. As the molten drops fell to his chest, Blitz was blown back from the man’s final gambit, which scattered the remaining liquid metal in his burnt and numbed palm all over the suffering man’s body. Droite screamed as he felt the searing liquid pain drip over his eyes, mouth, and arms, worsened by the electricity charged into them. Each second spent on Earth after that moment was torture beyond anything he had ever experienced, as the man twitched and screamed for help to his brother, the one he’d be joining soon enough. As the man’s final embers were snuffed out by a quick swipe from the scythe of death, the metal droplets, while concealing his eyes, preserved the face of a man who had been a vicious coward until the end.

“Is it… over?”

Blitz leaned up from the ground, viewing the body of his departed tormentor. He always felt like this day would come with a feeling of satisfaction, but staring into the gaping mouth of his victim, then back to his red and black hand, all he felt was remorse. Although, this feeling was shortlived, as the sight of his hand brought with it the pain he had been suppressing through the entire ordeal, causing him to wince and lie back down. His left hand clutched his charred right, as Blitz clenched his teeth and closed his eyes, the still-playing music in his ears lulling him to sleep.

I can regroup with everyone else… Just after I sleep this pain off a bit…
