Chapter 25:

Will

Abyss of evolution

Ami pulled out her blade and swung out of the tornado, descending on her now poorly functioning umbrella. The sphere slowly fell down, disintegrating into melting pieces. The girl stuck the long Kusanagi deeper into the ground, not knowing where to put it.

From the incredibly powerful blow of Hidora's plasma the umbrella cracked. Ami froze in horror, afraid to move.

"Yomi…"

The girl accidentally pulled it, and soot fell from the bottom. Ami lifted it a little higher and shook it a little, like a Christmas tree in the snow. The soot continued to fall along with the mirror fragments, hovering in the air next to Ami. Suddenly, the light turned on right from the bottom of the umbrella. And each fragment showed its own video image.

"What is this? My memories?.. No, this belongs to Yomi."

On one fragment, Yomi was still in the womb of his mother Eimi when she visited Sora, Yomi's father, in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, at the plant. He died that day, having found himself near the epicenter of the nuclear blast. Eimi was heavily irradiated and had her skin burned. But thanks to a premature birth, Yomi was born on August 15, also receiving a dose of radiation. His mother died in childbirth, so Miya and Tsutomu, his grandparents, took care of him.

“How does he remember this?” Ami thought and looked at the other fragment.

"She… it was she who killed my grandfather! Burned him! Sunny girl… it was all true. But how can this be, I loved her. Why!?"

The boy screamed inside himself during the funeral of Grandfather Tsutomu, doubting deep in his soul.

"But the cicadas are to blame… What should I do?"

"Yomi…" Ami said quietly.

"Maybe she controls the insects or somehow angered them? Can I blame her? What if… she burns me or grandma?! And why didn't I get burned? Should I tell her what really happened? What if I provoke her again?! No… no! What am I saying? She's… like grandma said, probably just a scared little girl… it's all this damned world…"

"Yomi… Yomi, are you listening?" Tsutomu called out to his grandson in another memory. "Our family is descended from the moon god Tsukiyomi. Aren't you interested, yawning so widely?"

"No, it's just all fairy tales! How do you know?"

"Shh, what disrespect! You'll see it with your own eyes soon, but for now you need to study. Otherwise, no more walks! "

Ami looked through several more, looking for the golden flower that her future husband had given her when he proposed to her as a child. She was curious to see how sincere Yomi was being. She hadn't expected such a frank flow of thoughts and wanted to figure it out. In that memory, Yomi was still afraid of Ami, but he really loved her and it took him a lot of effort to confess.

After Ami got to the memory of his death. Everything was as she saw and remembered young woman. A swarm of crazy cicadas rushed at Yomi, and from fear, Ami's powers awoke again, and she burned them. As she once did with Tsutomu, when he was also attacked.

The girl was speechless from her own ability and the thought that she’d killed her husband along with the cicadas. But suddenly Yomi himself lit up. Ami saw what he’d been doing all this time hid. The girl didn't notice among the many memories when Yomi first realized himself as the incarnation of Tsukiyomi. But here… He consciously used the power of the Moon God when he approached the girl and put her to sleep.

"Sleep, my princess…"

"N-no way… Tsukiyomi?.. All this time, you were also… No, what's more important is that I didn't kill you then! But what happened then?"

As Ami fell unconscious to the ground, half-naked Yomi heard some sounds behind a nearby tree and decided to check. He saw a man writhing in pain. He was holding his eyes and writhing on the ground like a snake.

Yomi guessed that it could be the one who controlled the insects' behavior. When the boy bent down and moved his hands away to examine the face of the one lying on the ground, Yomi saw two burnt eyes and part of a face. But even so, even after years, he recognized him.

"Sanno!?" Ami shouted in unison with Yomi from the memories.

"Yes… all this time…" Suddenly another voice of the husband was heard. "It was him."

"Yo-yomi…" Ami looked to the side, seeing her husband's image again after decades." You're finally back! "

"Yes, my love." The smoky silhouette said gently.

"I-I have so much to tell you! " Ami burst into tears.

“I was always with you, even though I couldn’t talk…” Yomi smiled. “So I’ve a lot to tell you. When I met Sanno, Izanami took over my mind and put it to sleep. Having taken me for dead, you cremated me alive…”

"W-what!?"

"Yes, but first we must get rid of the uninvited guest." Yomi suddenly said, looking into someone's soul. "Your name is Keshita, right?.. No, you don't know yourself…"

Tamiya suddenly screamed as if he’d woken up from a terrible nightmare.

"Finally!" Miku cried. "You're back, aren't you?"

"Y-yes… I understand everything."

"W-what did you understand? Could it be…"

"This power… by which people achieve their goals from learning to accomplishment… it has always been with us."

"I don't understand what you're talking about, what is this?"

"Will." Keshita smiled." Just will, Miku. It's… so strange."

"Eh? Sounds like banal motivation and that everything can be achieved through effort. Even from the point of view of modern biology, it’s unknown whether will exist. After all, this is a normal cause-and-effect relationship between genes and their programs… H-how can this work?"

"It's hard to describe in words. While I was in the consciousness of these "gods", I felt their internal driving force. I can't call it anything other than will. But what exactly happens next and…"

Before Keshita could explain, he noticed the remaining demons behind Miku.

"Beware!"

Tamiya grabbed Miku and somersaulted with her to avoid the blades the demon fired.

"How is this possible? They destroyed the control sphere, didn't they?"

"Look!" Miku pointed to the sky. "A demon has emerged from this new bloody rain. You need to take cover from it immediately, your cloak is damaged!"

The demon rushed after them, and the couple began to run away, but he suddenly continued shooting with sharp blades, hitting Miku's leg. She fell, howling in pain.

"No, Miku!"

Keshita He turned around, but the demon had already grabbed the girl. A vision flashed through Keshita's mind of how he’d recently tried to play the hero, but almost died. One voice whispered that the boy needed to run away immediately, to save his life and the valuable knowledge he’d received that could save the world. But Keshita pushed that thought aside, now he only wanted to save Miku.

“It’s there… inside me, I can feel it!”

Keshita tried to “feel” something inside himself, immersed in thoughts and slowly moving towards the demon.

“Yes, I feel it too…” Suddenly a familiar female voice rang out.

"Izanami! How… did the slime with the nanobots get through the hole in the cloak!? No, that's not important now!"

The boy resolutely jumped up to the demon and swung his fist at him, putting all his strength and will into it. Veins crawled up his arm, the muscles suddenly increased in volume, the skin became rough, as if turning to stone. With a powerful blow, Keshita destroyed the demon and pulled Miku away from him.

"Alive? "

"What was that? Y-you did it!?"

"I… am not sure yet." Tamiya looked at his hand.

"But why doesn't the demon rise again?"

"And…" Tamiya grabbed his head. "Izanami!"

Keshita fell to the ground in great pain and began to writhe. Miku rushed to him, trying to help, but was powerless.

"What interesting things are happening here!" A strangely familiar male voice rang out in Keshita’s mind. “It’s breathtaking!”

Keshita woke up in an endless darkness, a space where his imagination could create anything that existed in his own mind. He looked around for the source of the voice.

"Who's there!?" He shouted into the void. "I-izanami!?"

"No, it only surrounds us. Unable to become us. A mysterious entity… Basically, like you and me."

Keshita turned around and saw a foreigner in ordinary youth clothes, with short dark wavy hair and headphones on his neck. he’d unusually serious dark green eyes, as if he was always in danger and looking for enemies. The guys were almost the same height and age, so Keshita initially mistook him for his own alternative reflection.

"Huh? So, you finally see me! Nice to meet you, my name is Mikhail. I look forward to fruitful work!"
