Chapter 15:

Butterfly

Echoes of the Heart

Mayu stepped off the train with purpose, her scarf trailing slightly in the soft breeze. Her afternoon destination was clear in her mind: the home of her grandmother, Himawari Takamura. As she exited the station, her steps quickened. Visiting Grandma was always a joy, but today felt different. There was something she needed to ask.

The streets narrowed into a peaceful lane bordered by sunflowers, their golden faces tilted toward the afternoon sun. Mayu smiled faintly as she walked, the crunch of gravel beneath her feet. Her grandmother’s name, Himawari, meaning “sunflower”, suited her perfectly. She was a source of warmth and light in Mayu’s life, just like the vibrant flowers lining the path.

The familiar bark of Yuzu, Grandma’s bright yellow Shiba Inu, greeted her as she neared the wooden gate. His wagging tail showing enthusiasm as Mayu pushed the gate open, letting the comforting scent of blossomed flowers and fresh earth wash over her. Grandma was already outside, arranging a tea set on the small wooden table nestled within the garden.

“Mayu, my sunshine!” Himawari called warmly, her voice full of life. She stood amidst a vibrant array of flowers, her wide-brimmed hat shading her kind face. “You’re just in time. I made cucumber sandwiches, your favorite.”

Mayu crossed the garden, the soft buzz of bees and the flutter of butterfly wings creating a serene display. She noticed a striking butterfly perched delicately on a marigold—a Swallowtail, its wings a brilliant tapestry of yellow and black.

Grandma followed her gaze and smiled knowingly. “Beautiful, aren’t they? The garden has seen more butterflies this year. A good sign, don’t you think?”

Mayu nodded and took a seat across from her grandmother. Yuzu settled at their feet, his tail still wagging gently.

The afternoon tea began with light chatter. They spoke about the flowers, the changing seasons, and the small moments that made up their days. The cucumber sandwiches were crisp and refreshing, perfectly complementing the floral undertones of the tea.

After a while, Mayu set down her teacup, her gaze drifting to the horizon. She hesitated briefly before asking, “Grandma, can I ask you something…?”

Himawari tilted her head, curiosity dancing in her eyes. “Of course, dear. What’s on your mind?”

“Did you ever have a partner? I mean… you’ve always been alone, haven’t you? Was it lonely? And raising me—was it ever too much for you, doing it all by yourself?” The questions that hung in her mind for days all spilled out before her.

The questions hung in the air, but Grandma’s gentle smile never wavered. She reached down to stroke Yuzu’s fur, her fingers moving with practiced ease.

“Ah, Mayu,” Himawari began, her voice soft but steady. “Life is full of choices and paths, each with its own challenges and joys. I chose to walk my path alone, but I’ve never truly felt lonely. I had you, after all. Raising you was the most beautiful chapter of my life.”

Yuzu’s tail wagged faster as if affirming her words. Mayu’s heart swelled with a mix of gratitude and wonder.

“Wasn’t it difficult, though?” Mayu pressed gently. “Didn’t you ever wish for help, for someone to share the burden?”

Himawari’s eyes twinkled as she leaned forward, her hands clasping Mayu’s. “Raising you never felt like a burden. You were like a seed planted in fertile soil, full of potential. Watching you grow, tending to your needs, and seeing you blossom into who you are today—it brought me joy beyond words. And now, you’re a gardener yourself.”

Mayu blinked, slightly confused. “A gardener?”

“Yes, my dear,” Himawari said with a chuckle. “The work you do as a Familiar Bond Technician is like tending to a flower garden. You nurture connections, help them grow stronger, and in doing so, you touch more lives than you realize. Just as a well-tended garden supports bees, butterflies, and countless other creatures, your work creates ripples. The changes you help bring about in your clients affect everyone in their lives. It’s all connected, part of a vast ecosystem.”

Mayu felt a warmth spread through her chest, her grandmother’s words settling deep within her. She thought of the Swallowtail butterfly from earlier, its fragile beauty masking the profound impact it had on the garden’s ecosystem as a pollinator.

Himawari continued, her voice steady and full of pride. “Each small change you make in someone’s life, each bond you strengthen, creates a butterfly effect. You may not always see the impact, but it’s there, spreading far beyond what you can imagine. And I’m so proud of you for that.”

A lump formed in Mayu’s throat, and she squeezed her grandmother’s hands tightly. “Thank you, Grandma. That means so much to me.”

Himawari smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Never forget, Mayu. You are a part of something much bigger. And no matter what challenges come your way, know that you’re never truly alone.”

The two sat in thoughtful silence for a moment, the soft rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds filling the air. Yuzu yawned contentedly at their feet, his tail still moving lazily and Luma curled beside him.

As the sun dipped lower, casting a golden glow over the garden, Mayu felt a renewed sense of purpose. Her grandmother’s words were a reminder of the importance of her work and the interconnectedness of every life she touched.

The Swallowtail butterfly flitted past them, its wings catching the light in a brief, dazzling display. Mayu watched it go, feeling a deep connection to its journey. She knew she would carry this moment with her, letting it guide her for days to come.

With the tea finished and the sun setting, Mayu hugged her grandmother tightly before heading back down the sunflower-lined path. Her heart was lighter, her resolve stronger. She had a garden to tend, and she knew every flower in it had the potential to change the world.

The butterfly’s flight might seem small, but its impact was infinite.
