Chapter 18:
Echoes of the Heart
The poolside was alive with laughter, splashes, and the vibrant energy of familiars darting and floating around. Mayu adjusted her oversized sun hat, the blue ribbon fluttering lightly in the breeze. She wore a ruffled white two-piece swimsuit, her pale skin glowing under the afternoon sun. In her hand, she held a fresh coconut, sipping the cool water through a straw as she surveyed the scene.
A seal familiar barked playfully as it slid into the water, joining a pod of aquatic familiars weaving gracefully through the pool. On the deck, a cat with shimmering fur curled up, its soft purring almost audible over the upbeat music. Meanwhile, a small otter floated lazily on its back, clutching a shell between its paws.
“Mayu!” Riona’s voice cut through the lively chatter.
Mayu turned to see her friend approaching, purple hair tied in a ponytail, clad in a black swimsuit that aligned with her confidence. Beside her was a striking figure—Yuna, her spiky, fiery red hair catching the sunlight. Her fennec fox familiar padded alongside her, its large ears twitching to the rhythm of the music.
“Mayu, meet Yuna,” Riona said, grinning. “She’s wild but in the best way possible.”
“Nice to meet you, Mayu,” Yuna said, her voice bold and full of energy.
“And this is her familiar, Kitsu,” Riona added.
Kitsu yipped happily, its bright golden eyes full of curiosity. Mayu knelt to greet the fennec fox, scratching it gently behind the ears.
“You’re adorable,” Mayu said, smiling warmly.
The introductions continued as Norito, Riona’s brother, approached. He was short and lean, his sun-kissed skin evidence of hours spent outdoors. His green frog familiar, Tamu, sat perched on his shoulder, its wide eyes taking in the lively scene.
“Mayu, good to see you again,” Norito said, offering a friendly wave.
“You too, Norito. Happy birthday. Looks like a great party.” Mayu replied.
“I try,” he said with a chuckle. “Tamu’s been dying to swim all day.”
Mayu chuckled as she watched Tamu leap gracefully into the water, joining the aquatic familiars in their synchronized splashing. She couldn’t resist the temptation any longer and slipped into the pool herself, the cool water was a refreshing contrast to the warm sun.
Later, floating on a large leaf-shaped floaty, Mayu closed her eyes and let the sounds of cheerful music wash over her. The comfort of the water, the laughter, and the vibrant energy of both humans and familiars created a perfect harmony.
Yet, amidst all the excitement, her eyes caught a shy figure in the corner. A girl with snow-white hair, sat quietly under the shade of a palm tree. Her bangs obscured one of her striking red eyes, and her posture was withdrawn.
Mayu paddled to the edge of the pool, stepping out and wrapping a towel around her shoulders. Approaching the girl, she offered a kind smile.
“Hi, I’m Mayu,” she said softly. “Are you enjoying the party?”
The girl hesitated, her eyes darting to her hands before she replied, “I’m Sachiko.” Her voice was as quiet as her demeanor.
Mayu noticed a small creature perched on Sachiko’s lap. It was a lizard with an opal-white belly, its scales reflecting a rainbow of colors under the light.
“And who’s this little beauty?” Mayu asked, her tone gentle.
“This is Yin,” Sachiko said, her voice softening as she stroked her familiar’s tiny head.
Mayu crouched to get a better look at her. “Yin is stunning,” she said, genuinely awed.
Sachiko’s lips curved into a small smile. “Thanks. Nemu says I should try to enjoy these things more, but I’m not really good at big crowds.”
“Nemu?” Mayu asked, tilting her head.
As if on cue, a vibrant figure approached. Nemu, with her curly turquoise hair and tanned skin, exuded energy and warmth. Her fish familiar, a graceful creature with silvery-blue scales, twirled in the air beside her like a ballerina.
“Sachi, I told you this would be fun!” Nemu said, plopping down beside her friend. “Hi, I’m Nemu,” she said to Mayu, her voice bubbly and cheerful.
“Nice to meet you, Nemu,” Mayu said, glancing between the two friends.
“I dragged her here,” Nemu said, grinning and nudging Sachiko playfully. “She’d rather hide in her room, but I couldn’t let her miss out on all the fun.”
Mayu chuckled, sensing the deep bond between them. “Well, I’m glad you came, Sachiko. It’s always nice to meet someone new. And your familiar is breathtaking.”
Sachiko’s smile grew a little. “Thanks, Mayu... I think Yin likes you, too.”
Mayu sat with them for a while, enjoying the quieter side of the party. Even amidst the lively poolside festivities, moments like these, connecting with new people and their unique familiars, made her heart feel full.
The party continued with laughter, splashing, and the lively beats of the music, but Mayu carried with her the warmth of these newfound connections.
Familiars of every shape and size played, napped, or mingled, reflecting the personalities of their humans. Mayu returned to the water, floating aimlessly on her leaf floaty, letting herself fully unwind in the vibrant yet soothing atmosphere. She felt a gentle nudge against her foot and looked down to see Tamu, Norito’s frog familiar, playfully splashing her.
“You’re a mischievous one, aren’t you?” she said with a laugh, brushing the water from her face. Tamu croaked cheerfully before diving back under.
Norito swam over, shaking the water from his hair. “Looks like Tamu’s taken a liking to you. He doesn’t do that with just anyone.”
Mayu smiled. “I must be special then.”
“You are,” Riona said, joining them with a sly grin. “You’ve been making friends all over today.”
“Everyone’s been so welcoming,” Mayu replied. “It’s hard not to feel at ease.”
Riona leaned back on her floaty, watching as Yuna raced her fennec fox familiar, Kitsu, along the pool’s edge. “This is the kind of vibe we need more often. Work gets so intense sometimes, you know?”
Mayu nodded, her thoughts briefly drifting back to Heart Harmony. The hospital visit earlier still lingered in her mind, but she pushed it aside, focusing instead on the present.
Sachiko and Nemu approached. Sachiko looked a bit more relaxed now, her posture less guarded.
“Mayu, do you want to see something cool?” Sachiko asked, holding out her hand.
“Of course,” Mayu said, intrigued.
Sachiko gently placed Yin on the edge of the pool. The little lizard flicked her tail before diving into the water, its opalescent scales shimmering brilliantly. As Yin swam, a trail of rainbow light followed, mesmerizing everyone nearby.
“Whoa,” Yuna exclaimed, stopping mid-race to watch. “That’s incredible!”
“Yin is special,” Nemu said proudly. “No one else has a familiar quite like her.”
Mayu crouched by the pool, captivated. “She’s like a living piece of art,” she murmured.
Sachiko’s face lit up at the praise. “She’s my best friend,” she said softly, her hand resting on Nemu’s arm.
The sight of Yin’s glowing path seemed to ignite a fresh wave of excitement among the guests. Riona brought out a floating volleyball net, and soon a lively game ensued, familiars joining in to bat the ball with surprising skill. Mayu found herself laughing more than she had in weeks, the tension of her responsibilities melting away.
After the game, she found a quiet spot under a large palm tree, the distant sound of chatter and music creating a pleasant background. She sipped on her coconut water, her thoughts returning to the shy figure of Sachiko. It amazed her how diverse people’s bonds with their familiars could be—some loud and extroverted, others quiet and deeply personal.
Riona plopped down beside her, stretching her legs out. “You’re thinking about work again, aren’t you?”
Mayu chuckled. “I can’t help it. Meeting everyone today reminded me why I love what I do. Helping people form those bonds, seeing how it changes their lives… It’s rewarding.”
Riona nodded, her expression softening. “It is. But don’t forget to live your own life, Mayu. You deserve to feel those connections too.”
Mayu smiled, touched by her friend’s words. “I’ll try to keep that in mind.”
As the sky turned a deeper shade of orange, Norito called everyone over for cake. Tamu, perched on his shoulder, seemed just as excited as the humans. The cake, decorated with miniature fondant familiars, was a hit, and Mayu couldn’t resist snapping a photo to remember the day.
Afterward, she helped Sachiko and Nemu clean up a bit, chatting easily with them. Sachiko seemed more comfortable now, her earlier shyness replaced by a quiet warmth.
“Thank you for talking to me earlier,” Sachiko said as they stacked plates. “I don’t usually feel this comfortable around new people.”
“I’m glad we met,” Mayu said sincerely. “You and Sora are wonderful.”
Nemu grinned. “See, Sachi? I told you this would be fun.”
As the evening wound down, Mayu found herself reflecting on the day. She had come to celebrate Norito’s birthday, but she was leaving with much more—new connections, a renewed sense of purpose, and, perhaps, a clearer understanding of herself.
Walking to the train station with Riona, she felt a deep contentment. “Thanks for inviting me,” she said.
“Anytime,” Riona replied, linking her arm through Mayu’s. “You’re part of the family now.”
The train ride home was peaceful, the rhythmic hum of the tracks lulling Mayu into a pleasant daze. She thought of Sachiko, Norito, Yuna, and all the familiars she’d met today. Each bond, unique and beautiful, reminded her of why she chose this path.
Mayu glanced at her phone, scrolling through the photos she had taken. One of her favorites was of Yin’s rainbow trail in the pool. Smiling, she sent the picture to Riona with a simple message:
“Best day in a while. Thank you.”
The reply came almost instantly.
“More to come, Mayu. More to come.”
