Chapter 13:
Project: Beyond Comprehension
“Portable tent?”, A confirming nod and squeak comes from Peewee, assuring that they have the things on June’s Checklist before heading out. “Emergency Food and Water?”, Peewee nods. “Clothes?”, Peewee sticks their head in a packed backpack, emerging a couple of seconds later with a shirt over their head, shaking it off, back into the bag and nodding.
The two go back and forth for roughly ten minutes as they go down the checklist of everything they need. Swiping down through the holograms from her suit and checking off the last item, June turns to Peewee and grins excitedly, “Peeweeeee~” Her voice rings melodically, “Ya ready to ride Lil friend?”.
Peewee hops up onto the rover and nestles on their little goggles with its little paws, following with the little hide cap June made them, looking over at June with impatient anticipation.
June looks over at Peewee, chuckles, and yells “Awright, gimmie like 30 seconds, gotta grab one more thing.”. June jogs into the pod and grabs her Anti-gravity gun. As he picks it up, she yells out to Peewee, “Almost forgot, I’ve been working on something and just finished it earlier. Just one last thing to do!”.
As she walks outside with the gun, she pridefully grins at Peewee. “Check it, Lil’ friend, I did something awesome again,”. Taking the gun and swiping through her suit interface, she throws the gun into the air and through a hologram.
On the way back through the hologram, she snaps her fingers and yells, “Voila! Magic”, as the gun distorts into light and then into nothing.
In the interface, now a new slot appears. June presses it and renames it to “Multi-Purpose Gun”. Closing the interface, she looks over at Peewee, who seems to be in shock, not quite understanding what just happened, and says “Watch this,”.
June calls out “Multi-Purpose Gun” and snaps her fingers. As she does, the gun rematerializes from light into physical matter in her hand. “Now, I didn’t get all of this data from here or by myself, while I was gone, the cogs at HQ worked on the concept a lot, but I refined the data these past few days and managed to make these ideas into reality!”
Still amazed and very confused, Peewee hops off the rover and looks up at the gun to inspect its legitimacy. After a few sniffs, they determine June truly made the device rematerialize and accepts her grand talents as if it makes sense and isn’t an abnormal thing for June to be able to do.
As Peewee returns to their seat, June looks over and hops into the driver's seat, placing her backpack into the storage trunk in the back. As she straps on her goggles and cap and adjusts Peewee's headgear, she looks over to Peewee and says, “Where to lil’ buddy”.
Peewee looks around and eventually points their snout east. June looks off eastward, over into the woods. “East? Alright sounds good to me! Just gotta get down off the hill first and then we can head out!”.
June whips the rover around, rocketing semi-recklessly down the hill, adrenaline, and dopamine running the gearing in her head. With a little bit of anxiety and nervousness whirling around, inside Peewee's little head, they quickly feel it wash away as they look up at June and see the pure adventurous ambition emitting from June as she hastily maneuvers down the hill and eventually speeds off eastbound.
Bonnie’s Neighboring sun beats down ahead, and fluffy white clouds float carelessly above, as June and Peewee blast through the terrain, riding up and down the hills and the greyish-pink plains.
Occasionally stopping when June or Peewee spot something interesting or when they want to rest somewhere nice and have a snack and water, the two explorers cascade throughout the wilds of Planet Bonnie, venturing forth into unknown terrains waiting to be found.
As the day goes on, eventually the day comes to an end and June finds a nice wooded area to crash for the night. Stopping and parking the rover by a tree, June turns to Peewee and notices they’ve picked up on something interesting.
“Oh, I know that looks, little nose to the sky, whole body perked up, sniffing the air, focusing crazy hard, You’ve found a crystal, ain’t ya lil’ buddy?”. Peewee looks over at June and gives her a determined nod followed by a hasty blitz into the woods.
June, sporadically trying to jump off of the rover, collects herself enough and takes off running after Peewee, “Wait ya bloody balloon, I wanna see too!”. Following the swift pitter-patter of Peewee's little feet, June runs after them, into the woods.
Eventually, catching up to Peewee, June looks down as Peewee intensively digs at the first and gravel by the trunk of a nearby tree. June looks down for a moment, trying to be patient, but loses her battle against the growing impatience within and shouts “Alright, I gotta help ya. Ya got me bloody curious on what crystal has you all excited!”
June falls to her knees and starts shoveling the grey dirt with her hands, lifting up mounds of cold ground, and periodically helping Peewee by moving the displaced dirt out of their way.
After about an hour of digging, June flops onto her back with heavy breathing and through exhausted breaths, looks over at Peewee who’s clearly tired but still determined to find this crystal, and breathlessly says “Hey lil’ buddy, I know ya wanna find this thing but I’m freaking tired! Can we chill for rn and go get some food and sleep?”.
Peewee stops, looking over at June with tired eyes, and then snaps back to an endless determination as they start furiously digging at their massive hole, absolutely set on finding the crystal.
Through a fatigued sigh, June attempts to convince Peewee to chill for the night. “Look, I know your nose ain’t wrong, there's a bloody crystal here, but ain’t ya just a wee bit tired? I know you are cause’ I sure as hell am!”
June looks over and sees Peewee continuing to dig, “If you come back for the night, I promise I'll figure out a way to maybe work around the weight limit on my anti-gravity gun. Shouldn’t be too hard, just gotta tweak a few things, and that’ll make this easy as hell! So chill out for now, let's get some food buddy.”.
Peewee looks up after hearing June, finally fully dropping the energetic facade and collapsing over onto the ground, sliding down into the several-foot-deep crater the two of them managed to dig.
“Ahaha, look I knew ya was tired, I feel like my bloody body is gunna fall apart Peewee! Let's rest a few and then head back for some grub,” June's stomach grumbling as she realizes how hungry exerting all of this energy has made her.
After almost a full half hour, Peewee manages to pull themself out of the pit and falls into June's side. “Alright, ya ready? Let's go get some grub!”, both of the terraforms gaining the burst of energy they need to head back from the thought of eating and sleeping.
Returning to the camp, Peewee lays on the cushion of the rover and June prepares the food she packed, two containers of berries, some water, and some cured synthetic meats left over from when she had first arrived on Bonnie.
Once the two of them finished pigging out, June set up the sleeping bags and the dome. “Tomorrow, I’ll spend some time tweaking the code for the anti-gravity gun and we’ll find that damn crystal. Anyways, I’m freaking tired, so goodnight Peewee!”. June looks over and sees Peewee already fully knocked out, deeply asleep under the little sleeping bag June made them.
The two tired adventurers clonk out for the day, both incredibly excited for the next day but also incredibly exhausted from their excavating. Sleeping very deeply for the next 10 hours.
“Hey Bonnie, where are ya hiding this damn thing anyways?” June looks up to the sky while sitting up against a tree, tampering with the coding of the anti-gravity gun. Barely realizing it, June finishes the couple of things that she needed to adjust and sets it up so that the gun takes on the new properties.
Aiming the gun at a spot on the ground in front of her, she pulls the trigger and the blue light jolts from the tip of the gun with a whirring noise. As the light hits the ground, a blue light washes over the dirt and sinks down underneath.
“Moment of truth, let’s see if I finally figured this damn programming out.”. June puts her hand out and pinches at the new hologram and watches as a large mound of gravely grey dirt lifts into the air, fully under her control.
“Hell yeah, finally. That took me way too long to figure out. Time to go wake up Peewee for some breakfast and show them I fulfilled my promise!”. Snapping her fingers and dematerializing her multi-purpose gun, June walks over to wake up Peewee.
“Hey Peewee wake up! It’s been like 11 hours, Wakey wakey, look what I did!” Tired little beady eyes look up at June as Peewee looks at June shoot a mound of dirt and lift the mound into the air, displacing it.
Peewee shakes its head in disbelief, and after realizing they're not dreaming, they leap up onto June with sleepy gratitude flowing from Peewee's happy actions. “Now, let’s eat some breakfast and head over!”
