Chapter 7:

Obligatorily unreasonable creatures

Why Are You Still Awake?

We were leaving the place. A lush, verdant garden, abundant with various species of vegetation i didn't know the names of. The plants are meticulously tended and trimmed, devoid of weeds or moss, despite the absence of any human. Well, humans are absent, because people didn't need to use it in the first place, death has become a rare occurrence

"You really did take after your father, eh kid? Driving this antiquated contraption"
"Haha you think i do? Glad to have taken after you too, pops!"
"Oh right, i have this gift for you"
Dad seems to be cheerfully chit-chatting with his grandpa. I guess they both have regained their composure. Huh what is dad doing at the back of the car? Ohh, so that's why mom and dad left that one extra fish there, the biggest one
"Here you go pops, a cocofish, your favourite"
"Ah, you even remember my favourite! You really have matured, kid"
My great grandfather took the fish, and let it float in the air, above his palm. What? In an instant, the fish's scales, fins, guts and gills all detached from its body and perished. The fish got torched for a second, then diced into small, bite-sized pieces, while still in the air. He handed each of us a piece, i looked at mine in disbelief. This is even more insane than what mom bringing out the sink, and somehow it still isn't the limit of what a human being could do"Ah! The taste is just how i remember it!", exclaimed my great grandfather
"Uh so, now we're gonna be going home. Are you coming with us?"
"It's a house i bought not too long ago, not the one you and grandma were staying in... But i could take you there if you want"
"Take me there?" "Using that contraption of yours again?", Great grandfather's usual cheerful expression disappeared, he seemed a bit hesitant to take the car. This comes off as a surprise, isn't he like really old? Born from when humanity was still inventing new things?

We were going to part ways with my great grandfather at the nearest monorail station. I was left in the car with mom while dad was taking him to the station. My grandfather glanced back in my direction, wearing a broad smile on his face
"Your parents are raising you well kiddo, you'll have a great life ahead. In contrast to me, just a half-baked old man who's too far gone to go back to ordinary life, but also too cowardly to learn of 'The Truth'" "Make sure not to lead humanity to extinction!"
"Um what? What does he mean by that?"
"Baby, you'll get what he meant when you're older" "Make sure to comprehend his words, but not feel them"
"Mom?? You're not helping!"
"Ahaha. Well, just think that he's unable to live in the moment. Something your dad also struggled with for a long time, until i met him"
"Live in the moment...? Yeah i'll just assume i understand"
"But whatever it is, have you never struggled with it?"
"Hm? Yeah, i did, for a while" "When i was old enough, i also took on a few 'Ascensions' behind my parents' back. It felt like a whole new world, moving from one landmark to another in a matter of minutes, constantly changing my look and clothes. I felt like i was on top of the world, until the dopamine rush was over. And guess what, i took more 'Ascensions', so i could become happy all the time, until i got used to that happiness" "It was a vicious cycle sweetie"
I'm suddenly learning so much about my family, i really didn't expect mom to be so into those 'Ascensions' since she always seemed so down to earth "Then... how did you get out of it?"
"It was your grandpa's last message to the world" "I was there on that day with my parents, out of mere curiosity" "While pondering his love for his family, he also contemplated his love for life. He cherished simple things like newly sprouted trees, or the old clock that was consistently five minutes slow, yet still capable of indicating the time. Most of all, he cherished human emotions, that it's okay to feel other emotions than happiness, that it's fascinating we could have moments of sadness and anger without any apparent reason" "Amid all the pain and disorientation from the ongoing process of the final 'Ascension', for a split second, before disconnecting from the trillions of observers and plummeting to the ground, his mind snapped back, and sent one last message to the world"

[I love being human, I'd rather be human, obligatorily unreasonable creatures]
