Chapter 17:
Project: Beyond Comprehension
As June lets go of the pouch, a spark of red light flashes from the base of the bands all the way up to the pouch in less than a millisecond. At the exact moment that June's fingers let go of the pouch, the red light and blue light connect and create a crackling flash of purple around the pouch.
As the pebble releases from the pouch, a blue, protective energy covers June's body as a Purple Bolt blasts from the pouch and completely blasts through the tree, cutting several of the bone-hard trees fully down.
June’s feet leave the ground as she flies backwards and roughly floats to the ground sustaining minimal damage despite the lethal shock her body should’ve endured from shooting that incredible amount of force. “HOLY HELL!”, June yells as she slides backward on the ground.
Rapid squeaks spew from Peewee, Unable to tell if they feel frightened, amazed by June, or worried about her. June shakes her head and looks over to Peewee and then over at the hologram meant to measure the KPM.
Unable to even remotely understand what she just did, June looks at the Speed and then back at Peewee, jaw completely wide open. Once words form, June screams to Peewee, “2,000 KILOMETERS PER HOUR!?? HOLY SHIT, I’M BLOODY AMAZING!”
Peewee continues hopping up and down, running around June while she laughs, back sprawled out on the ground. “Bloody hell, I definitely could tone this down A LOT! HAHAHA! That’s fantastic it!” June looks over at the several exploded trees all in the line of fire.
“Sorry Bonnie! That was so much crazier than I thought, I suppose I was a wee bit hasty with my formulas but I just couldn’t wait to see it in action!” Silence lies sternly still as the minor ringing in June's ears begins to subside.
Jumping eagerly up to her feet, June snaps her finger and dematerializes the slingshot into her suit. Clapping her hands together, June starts to speed walk over to the pod and prepares to immediately adjust the slingshot so as to not go overboard again.
“It’s a bloody good thing I took precautionary measures like the low-gravity protective barrier and the high-quality earmuffs. Even with both of those in place, It still left my ears ringing and I will most definitely feel the aftermath of that shockwave in the morning.” June looks over as Peewee follows her into the pod.
“Well, Whaddya say I make us some food? I’m pretty hungry after all that. I could use some tatties, sound good?”. Peewee lets out several little squeaks, agreeing with June, confirming that they’re also hungry.
While June preps dinner, She looks back over to Peewee, and from over her shoulder asks, “Hey, when I finish with my tweaks to the slingshot, you wanna explore some?”
“Ever since we found those other clusters of the Thermal crystals, I ain’t been too worried about the power source, so I can use up some free time to run around and explore Bonnie if ya want.” June smirks, already knowing the answer to her question.
Peewee looks up from the bundle of blankets they’re currently buried under and lets out a squeak. June smiles and looks back towards the dishes. “Alrighty then, Sounds like a bloody plan, Let’s find some cool stuff to tinker with, ya?”.
June finishes cooking dinner and the two adventurers get ready to sleep and await tomorrow's unknown.
“Check, Check, Check. Seems like everything’s ready here. Let’s get geared up and hit those hills lil’ buddy!” Already wearing the headgear, Peewee hops up onto the passenger seat and sits impatient and eager to ride.
Once June finishes gearing herself up and packing what they need, she hops onto the rover and heads off into the mystery and beauty of Bonnie, riding through the hills during the festival, admiring the twins and their grand performance endlessly.
“Hey Peewee, so, I packed a bunch of supplies for us this time and I’d like to go super far in one direction, further than we’ve ever gone. You down Peewee?” An obvious nod follows June’s question as Peewee closes their eyes and enjoys the breeze blowing over the hills.
Eventually, the night ends and the two of them find a little patch of woods to camp out by for the night, propped up on top of a little hill, June sets up both of the sleeping bags for the night.
“Alright, let's eat and head to bed for tonight so we can continue onward in the mornin’.” June begins unpacking some of the meals in her lunchbox. June opens one of the packed lunches and a cold icy mist emits from within the container.
Thanks to you, we can actually do this kinda thing now. Before I was worried about the stuff that I brought going bad too quickly but those thermal crystals we found are incredible for keeping things at certain temperatures. All I had to do was figure out how to control the temperature and, boom, packed lunches!”
Peewee looks up, proud and increasingly more hungry the longer the smell of baked tatties lingers in the air. “Not to mention, when we found the other clusters, I was able to research and make schematics for the sustainable power source,”.
June looks up, opening her holo-interface. “Unfortunately, I got a wee bit distracted by the slingshot and now I still haven't built a single thing.” June snaps and yells “Slingshot”, grabbing ahold of the masterwork slingshot. “And if I’m being honest, this was totally worth it.” June smiles to herself, admiring her masterful slingshot, the one, in ways, she’s always dreamed of.
Laying down, June looks over and sees Peewee seconds from nodding off, completely asleep. Not much longer after, June soon followed, falling asleep in her sleeping bag, comfortably under the dancing lights and audience of stars.
“Aaaand, we’re off!” June yells as she revs up the rover, now blitzing over the hills. June and Peewee, the dynamic duo on Bonnie, ready to discover all of the cool crystals that Bonnie has to offer.
“Hey, Peewee. Look ahead, ye see that. There’s no more hills on the horizon that I can see. That’s never happened before, am I seeing things?” June subtly glances over to Peewee for reassurance. “Usually, everything we’ve seen is relatively flat for the most part, minus a couple big hills and caverns,”.
Peewee squints their eyes and then follows by giving June a surprised look and nodding up at her. Clearly, something seemed a little off about the horizon. “Pretty weird. Hmmm, well only one way to find out.” June remarks as she continues pushing down on the pedal.
As time passes and the duo makes their way to the horizon, the visuals become much clearer as they get closer, realizing there is some kind of decline here that lies up ahead, steeping than anything they had yet to see.
Eventually arriving, June and Peewee stop the rover at the foot of the last hill. As June stops the rover, she and Peewee jump off and start to run up the hill. “Whaddya think is beyond this hill? Maybe just lower elevations? More plains? May-”. Upon making eye contact with the reality of what lies ahead, June’s words fell short.
June’s mouth stops working on her as she peers her eyes above to see an endless and vast area of nothing beyond this hill. Hundreds of feet below, June can barely tell amidst the fog and sheer distance, but all the way down was an entire ocean.
“Now what the bloody hell Bonnie, how do ya expect me to enjoy the beach when it’s all the way down there? The scanners picked up that this planet would have an ocean, but they didn’t pick up the fact that its ‘Surface’ is actually so flat because it’s the tops of mountains that have been eroded away over millions of years of being battered by the ocean! So interesting!
June looks up at the moons’, “Man, I really don’t understand anywhere near enough about you yet, do I?” The sights of the twins dancing and the festival raging on over the vast abyss, reflecting in and out of the mist, June feels an uncontrollable sense of wonder.
Through her Jade eyes, the sight of such a piece of artwork, gifted to her by Bonnie, fills her with the ever-increasing aspiration to learn more about not Just Bonnie, but the twins too.
Nearly 45 minutes go by of the two of them, sitting and admiring. Eventually, June turns over to Peewee and stands up onto her feet. “Alright buddy, it’s time to head on back to Fort Tattie. You ready?”.
Peewee stands up, seemingly a little out of it as the oceans’ high breezes seem to have soothed both of their bodies. A short couple of squeaks from Peewee are then followed by a little nod from them.
“Alright then, time to head home,”. As June says those words, all within a couple of seconds, the rocks on the edge of this abyssal cliff give out and Peewee begins to fall.
June’s heart stops and her world freezes for just a moment, as she watches Peewee begin to disappear into the misty depths below. “OH GOD, PEEWEE NOO!”.
Without becoming a conscious thought, and without any thinking, a single phrase, followed by a snap of June’s fingers echoes and bounces between the clouds around her, the phrase multiplying and scattering around everything. The word, reflecting back into her ears, causing time and everything to resume, snapping back to reality “Slingshot,”.
