Chapter 20:

Sacrifice in the Darkness

The Exiled Explorer

The large door that had opened provided a path for them, but it also granted passage to countless enemies. As William and Alya entered the Luminaris distribution center, they felt an unfamiliar chill. The massive, glowing Luminaris crystals inside the room cast bright light, yet the atmosphere was oppressive, as though every corner held darker secrets.

Ahead of them, Khadija and Lira were already standing in the center of the vast room, facing control panels filled with advanced technology that they didn’t fully understand. But Khadija clearly knew what needed to be done. Her hands moved swiftly, pressing buttons that seemed to activate the Luminaris system.

"Time’s running out," Khadija hissed, her sharp eyes focused on the holographic display before her. "This system will reactivate soon if we don’t shut it down now."

William surveyed the surroundings, realizing they had little time before the royal forces caught up with them. They had to act fast, or all their efforts would be in vain.

"Alya, guard the door!" William ordered. "I’ll help Khadija!"

Alya nodded, without hesitation heading straight for the large door they had just destroyed. Royal forces were beginning to appear, surrounding the exit. Time was growing tighter, and the battle had to begin once again.

William quickly moved to Khadija’s side, who was now focused on the control panel. "How do we disable it?" William asked.

Khadija looked at him for a moment, her eyes sharp. "You want to help? Our time is almost up."

"I won’t stand by," William replied firmly. "If you fail, the whole city will be destroyed. I can’t let that happen."

Khadija sighed deeply. "Thieves are always in the wrong place at the wrong time, William Greaves. But this time, we can work together." She pointed at the large panel before her. "This is the main control that connects Luminaris to the entire city’s energy grid. Without disabling it, the city will run out of resources in a matter of hours."

William looked at the panel, complex and filled with symbols he didn’t understand. But he knew one thing: this was the moment to make a crucial decision.

"Lira, help her," Khadija ordered her assistant.

Lira nodded and stepped forward, assisting Khadija in untangling the more complicated components of the panel.

Meanwhile, Alya fought fiercely against the growing number of royal forces. Her sword clashed with their crystal blades, creating sparks of light that nearly blinded her. Though exhausted, she was undaunted. Every move she made was decisive, forcing the enemies to retreat. Yet, the forces kept coming, relentless.

"Alya, watch out!" William shouted from behind.

But Alya only smiled faintly, countering with a strike that sent one of the guards to the ground. "I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me!"

William turned his attention back to Khadija and Lira, who were working tirelessly. Time kept ticking, and with each passing second, they were closer to failure. Outside, the sound of the royal forces’ footsteps grew louder. They had little time left.

"This is it," Khadija said in a tense voice as the system began to respond. "I’m almost done."

However, before they could celebrate, a loud crash sounded from the back door—royal forces had breached the Luminaris distribution room. Darius, the commander of the royal forces who had chased them earlier, appeared in the doorway with a sinister smile on his face.

"No one’s leaving here alive," Darius said in a deep voice, raising his glowing crystal sword. "Please, give them a warm welcome."

Several soldiers moved forward, attempting to trap them. William grabbed his sword and prepared himself. "Alya, hold them here! Khadija and I will finish this!"

Alya fought with all her might, fending off several enemies. However, Darius stepped forward with unwavering confidence, bringing a stronger force with him. William knew this was an unavoidable battle.

On the other side, Khadija finally pressed the last button on the control panel. A loud crack echoed, followed by a flash of light from the Luminaris crystals surrounding them.

"It’s done," Khadija said, though her tone didn’t reflect any joy. "The system is offline... but there’s a price to pay."

Suddenly, the entire room shook. The crystals in the ceiling and floor trembled violently, as if reacting to the massive change that had just occurred. Darius was shocked and immediately ordered his forces to retreat, but it was too late.

Lira ran towards Khadija and William. "We have to go! It’s going to explode in a few minutes!"

"Not enough time..." Khadija said, her face pale. "I’ve shut down the city’s main power, and it’s going to cause a massive explosion if we don’t get out."

Alya quickly made her way to them. "We have to leave now!"

Khadija looked at them all with eyes full of resolve. "I’m staying here. If you go, I can shut down the vital parts of the Luminaris distribution center, but I won’t make it out in time."

William stared at Khadija, his confusion turning into sharp realization. "You’re insane! Don’t tell me you’re going to sacrifice yourself here!"

"I’ve known the risks," Khadija replied calmly, her eyes locking with William’s. "This is the only way for you to survive and prevent further destruction. Time’s up."

Without another word, Khadija stepped forward and pressed the final button that would lock the system, giving William and the others a chance to escape. The first explosion sounded, and the entire place began to crack.

"Quick, go!" Khadija shouted, her voice a mix of courage and resignation.

William grabbed Alya’s hand and ran, leaving Khadija behind.

But in their hearts, they knew that Khadija’s sacrifice would be the turning point in their journey toward a future fraught with danger.
