Chapter 24:

The Shadow That Waits

The Exiled Explorer

The city of El-Mahra now lies in ruins, yet behind the rubble, hope slowly begins to emerge. The Luminaris crystals, which had long been the city’s source of power, have shattered, but their destruction raises many questions. Amid the chaos, William, Khadija, and Alya stand amidst the debris, gazing at a future full of uncertainty.

“We did it. We destroyed it,” Alya said, her voice panting. “But I feel like this isn’t over.”

Khadija nodded slowly, her eyes sharp as she scanned the surroundings. "This is just the beginning. There’s so much we still don’t know about Luminaris, and even more power hiding beneath the surface."

William stood still, his gaze fixed on the place where the crystal device had been shattered, now a pile of fragments. "Prince Alim is still alive," he said quietly, his voice full of calculation. "And he must have a backup plan."

Khadija sighed. “I’m worried he won’t stop here. As long as Luminaris exists, he will find a way to restore it. But we don’t know how far its influence has reached in this city or the resources that are still out there.”

They stood silently for a moment, contemplating Khadija’s words. At the same time, the atmosphere around them grew darker. The sky, once clear, was now filled with dark clouds, a sign that something bigger was waiting for them.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps grew louder. William turned and saw a messenger dressed entirely in black approaching hurriedly. "Your Majesty Khadija," he said, bowing. "We’ve received a report from the eastern border. A large army is advancing toward El-Mahra. It seems they’re being led by someone bearing the mark of an ancient kingdom that was long thought lost."

Khadija looked surprised. "The mark of a lost kingdom? What do you mean?"

The messenger nodded. "We’ve detected an extremely powerful energy emanating from this army, much like a source that once existed in the old kingdom. We fear this may be connected to Prince Alim’s presence, or worse, someone with even greater ambitions."

William felt something unusual in the air. There was a tension, as though the future of the city was threatened by an unseen yet powerful shadow. "Prince Alim can’t be alone. Someone is helping him, and they might be even more dangerous than we thought," he said, his voice firm.

Khadija looked at William. “I agree. We need to prepare, but we also need to know who’s behind Alim. We can’t let El-Mahra fall into the hands of someone more evil than him.”

"Who could be worse than Alim?" Alya asked, narrowing her eyes. "Is there a threat greater than the ambition of a prince?"

William couldn’t answer right away. “We’ll find out soon. But for now, we need to move. We can’t just sit here and wait for the attack. We need more information.”

Khadija glanced at the communication tools scattered around the city that were still functional, despite most of them having been destroyed. “I’ll contact some of the loyalists still in the palace. They might know more about who’s really behind Prince Alim.”

William nodded. “Alya, can you track their movements? Find out how close they are.”

Alya nodded. “I can do that. It’ll be easier if I can move undetected.”

William looked up at the sky, which was beginning to turn gray. “We don’t have much time. Go, do what needs to be done.”

Alya immediately ran toward one of the hidden paths outside the city, while William and Khadija continued their conversation.

“If this army is really coming, we can’t just hold out,” Khadija said. “We have to prepare to strike before they strike us.”

William knew Khadija was right. El-Mahra couldn’t just be left to fall. Even if they had to destroy more things to protect it, they would do it. However, a sense of dread lingered in his heart—this new threat might be far greater than anything they could face now.

---

A few hours later, Alya returned with a chilling report. “They’re already outside the border,” she said, out of breath. “And they’re bringing something incredibly powerful— a war machine made of crystal. It’s not just any device.”

William stared at Alya, his eyes wide. “A war machine made of crystal? That can’t be…”

Khadija looked at both of them seriously. “If that’s true, it means our enemies this time are far more dangerous than we imagined. And if that war machine is powered by Luminaris, we won’t be able to last long.”

William bit his lower lip, trying to calm himself. “We have no choice. We have to stop them, no matter what it takes.”

Khadija looked toward Alya. “Alya, we need you. We need more information about this army and we need to stop that war machine before they can use it.”

Alya looked at both of them, her eyes full of determination. “I’ll go back. There’s no time to hesitate.”

---

The breach has begun, and El-Mahra prepares to face a threat greater than anything it has encountered before. The crystal army approaching from beyond, led by hidden hands, waits on the horizon—and William and his friends must be ready for the inevitable battle.
