Chapter 28:

Fighting Together

mission outcome: unclear_

"Why the hell are you even here?" Fuyuki asked angrily.

"Do you even know who I am?"

"Of course. You are Yamada, he replied as if talking to a moron.

"Yamada what?" he asked which made Fuyuki try to rack his brain to remember a name he had long forgotten. But no matter how much he tried, he couldn't recollect how the person before him was called.

"See?" Yamada sneered at him tauntingly. "You don't even remember," he shouted at him suddenly, making Fuyuki shiver in fright. "Your kind only cares about your kin.

"That's not true, I..."

"'Cause why would you even bother to remember? Ordinary people mean nothing for the likes of you. You think climbing into his bed," he nodded towards Feng Liwei disdainfully. "Will make you invincible  because now you have him wrapped around your pretty little finger but you are just as vulnerable as him."

"Stop this nonsense already," Fuyuki ordered him angrily.

"Do you think you can trust him? He is just like his father, just like anyone in their circle in this whole fucking city. Ordinary people like us mean nothing to them. They use you if they can and they discard you if you've served your purpose without a second thought. That's what he did to me when he was told I'd be his future spouse. He went back to my past and changed my sex, so he wouldn't have to marry me. And he did the same to you."

Hearing this made Fuyuki speechless and stood frozen in place as if a heavy weight had fallen on his shoulders. He didn't know what to think but he felt like his shoulders couldn't hold the weight, so it fell off his shoulders right down on his heart.

"I just wanted to save you, so you won't have to be forced into a marriage even before you were born."

"That's actually a very thoughtful decision and in fact, it happened just the way he said," Dr. Rostensky confirmed, making Fuyuki shocked and almost as angry as Yamada was right now.

"Save me?" he laughed hysterically. "As I've said before, what someone considers the right choice might be the worst choice for someone else. Do you know what the most peculiar thing to exist is?" he asked looking at Feng Liwei but seeing his confusion he replied to himself. "You. Tell me, why does a world without war need a soldier to uphold peace?"

A few seconds of silence followed then the Major looked up at him directly, his disdainful sneer returning to his face again. "To eliminate people like you, who are a threat to world peace," he said calmly, and in the blink of an eye, his wristband emitted a stealth weapon injuring Yamada, who was caught off-guard and fell to his knees bleeding from the wound on his waist.

"If you really want to hate someone, hate your mother," Feng Liwei told him in a cruel tone as he approached him in his usual slow, long strides. "He was the one who sold you out to me."

"Why would she do that?" Yamada sneered at him. "She has enough money."

"Enough is never enough."

"Is this also the reason why you didn't tell me?" Fuyuki asked suddenly making Liwei's back tense visibly.

"It's a horrible twist of fate meeting you," he replied slowly, making Fuyuki's heart freeze even further and he felt like he could no longer breathe. "I made her change your sex exactly because of what she said earlier. Hoping that we won't ever meet and you can have a fulfilling life without being forced to marry a stranger to whom you were betrothed way before you were born. I didn't expect to meet you, fall for you, and have a baby with you either," he said, making a step toward Fuyuki with each word he said.

"Ahem," Dr. Rostensky interrupted. "It's a pleasure to be part of such a historic moment as the heir to the future world leader's existence is confirmed but I suggest you discuss this privately.

"You are right. We won't take up more of your time," he said and turned back to Fuyuki. "And you were right. It's probably safer for you to give birth as is than risk unnecessary complications by making additional modifications on you."

"Ugh, certain people always tend to get what they want."

They glanced at Yamada, who was now almost lying on the floor, still bleeding. They forgot about his presence, so hearing his voice surprised them as if they thought he was either gone or died already.

"That is nothing for you to worry about," Liwei told him, and went and squatted down before him. "You know, people always get what they deserve. You are going to die here, while we continue with our lives and fight for what we believe in to make this world an even better place. I don't care what others think about me but I certainly don't want others to think I'm like you. So, you can be pissed that I didn't choose you even as a man but I only care for those, who have a heart to care about others. And for that, I'm willing to sacrifice my life so our child can bear witness to that peaceful paradise of a world you wanted to destroy. And I won't ever be sorry for stopping you in your attempts," he said and stood up, looking down at Yamada, who was already lying on the floor. "And no, I'm not sorry for what I did and don't regret doing it either.

"Did you mean what you just said?" Fuyuki asked, tears flowing down on his face.

"Have I ever lied to you?" Liwei asked turning toward him.

"Except not telling me about that extra modification... No, you didn't."

"And I won't ever do that again. Whatever you want, you can have it. However you want things to be, they will be that way. Not because I can do anything as the future world leader. But because I love you and want to spoil you rotten. And to see that beautiful world we create together for the people to live in. Only then, I can be satisfied and feel that everything I did was worth it."

Fuyuki looked at him unable to stop crying, trying to find the words to express everything that just went through his head while listening to him but realized that he probably wouldn't be able to express his feelings toward him this beautifully, so he decided to say the simplest thing that came to his mind.

"I love you, too," he said smiling, his teary eyes making his vision blurry but he was no longer afraid, nor angry. He knew that now everything would be just the way it should be.
