Chapter 0:

A New Reality

Mechanical Evolution | 機械進化 (Kikai Shinka)

The neon-lit streets of Tokyo buzzed with their usual evening energy, but for Akira Nakamura, something felt amiss. He couldn't quite place it—a tingling sensation at the back of his neck, a strange clarity to his vision. As he walked home from extra tuition, the world seemed sharper, more vibrant. Suddenly, a flicker in the corner of his eye caught his attention. Floating translucent text appeared, hovering just at the edge of his vision:

[Leg Strength: 10]
[Reaction Time: 8]
[Overall Compatibility: 35%]

Akira blinked hard, shaking his head. The text disappeared, but the unease remained. He quickened his pace, eager to get home and convince himself it was just fatigue playing tricks on his mind. As he turned down a quieter side street, a figure stepped out of the shadows. The man's eyes glowed an unnatural blue, piercing through the dim light like a predator's gaze. Akira felt an instinctual chill run down his spine as he realised that this stranger could see him—truly see him—in ways he had yet to comprehend. More floating text appeared around the attacker:

[Enhanced Individual Detected]

[Threat Level: Moderate]

"Well, well," the stranger sneered, cracking his knuckles. "Looks like we've got a fresh upgrade. Time to test your mettle." Akira's heart raced. He wanted to run, but his body refused to move. As the attacker lunged forward, time seemed to slow. Without thinking, Akira's body reacted, dodging the punch with inhuman speed.

 [Reaction Time increased to 12]

The fight was a blur of movement, each exchange causing more text to appear, stats rising and falling. Akira felt a surge of power coursing through him—exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure. When it was over, his attacker lay unconscious at his feet. Akira stared at his trembling hands, a mixture of awe and horror washing over him. What was happening to him? As if in answer, a final message appeared:

[Welcome to the Upgrade System. Your journey begins now.]

Akira stumbled home, his mind reeling. He didn't know it yet, but this night marked the beginning of a transformation that would challenge everything he thought he knew about himself and the world around him. The hidden cost of power lingered in the air—a silent warning that would soon reveal itself in ways he could not yet fathom.
