Chapter 4:
Guided Steps
Chapter 4: Shadow of Deceit
JJ's heart raced as he stared at the ominous message. His thoughts sprinted back to the cryptic note in his dorm and the eerie whispers in the library. What secrets lay hidden beneath Fundamental's serene surface?
With trembling fingers, JJ typed a response: "Who is this? What do you want?" The phone's silence was deafening.
Suddenly, another text appeared: "Meet me at the old oak tomorrow midnight. Come alone." JJ's pulse quickened. Should he investigate or ignore the mysterious summons?
As midnight approached, JJ crept through the deserted campus, the old oak's towering silhouette looming before him. The wind whispered secrets in the leaves. His heart pounded.
A figure emerged from the shadows. JJ's instincts tensed.
"Who are you?" JJ demanded, trying to steady his voice.
The figure stepped forward, revealing a hooded face. "Someone who knows the truth, JJ. About Fundamental. About your father's death."
The hooded figure pulled back its hood, revealing Preacher Saul Oakwood, Dean Oakwood's son. "Your father uncovered dark secrets, JJ. Embezzlement, cover-ups, and manipulation. He threatened to expose us."
JJ's eyes widened. "What do you mean?"
Saul's voice dropped to a whisper. "Fundamental's true purpose is not salvation, but control. We groom students for political and social influence. Your father discovered the truth and paid the ultimate price."
JJ reeled, stunned. "Murdered?"
Saul nodded grimly. "Silenced. And now, JJ, you're digging up the past. They'll stop at nothing to keep the truth buried."
JJ's skepticism deepened. "I don't believe you. Fundamental's teachings emphasize compassion, forgiveness, and truth. Your father, Dean Oakwood, is a respected leader. What proof do you have?"
Preacher Saul Oakwood's expression turned cold. "Proof? You want proof? I have documents, recordings, and witnesses. But be warned, JJ, once you see, there's no going back."
JJ hesitated, torn between doubt and curiosity. "Why should I trust you, Saul? You're implicated."
Saul's eyes flashed anguish. "Redemption, JJ. I seek redemption. My family's legacy is tainted. Help me expose the truth."
JJ's eyes narrowed. "You're the one who's been sending me threats, aren't you? Using Fundamental as a cover-up for your own sinister agenda."
Saul's expression twisted, confirming JJ's suspicions. "You're clever, JJ. But too curious. You'll never expose me. I've framed Fundamental perfectly."
JJ's anger flared. "You murdered my father, exploited students, and manipulated faith for personal gain."
Saul sneered. "Faith is weakness, JJ. Power is truth. And I'll stop at nothing to protect mine."
Saul's voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "Back off, JJ. Forget what I said. You're playing with fire. They'll destroy you, just like your father."
With those chilling words, Saul turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving JJ shaken and resolved to uncover the truth. The old oak's branches creaked ominously in the wind, as if warning JJ of the dangers ahead.
JJ stepped into his dimly lit room, his heart heavy with the weight of Saul's revelations. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, clutching his Bible. The familiar pages offered comfort amidst turmoil.
"God, I seek Your truth," JJ whispered, his voice trembling. "Reveal the darkness, Lord. Give me courage to stand against evil."
He opened the Bible, and a verse leapt off the page: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth" (Romans 1:18, KJV).
Tears streamed down JJ's face. "Father, expose the deceit. Bring justice to those who've suffered."
In the silence, JJ felt an unshakeable resolve solidify within him. He would fight for truth, no matter the cost.
"Lord, protect Tiffany and Maya. Keep them from harm's way. Guide me through the darkness," JJ prayed fervently.
As he prayed, a sense of peace enveloped him. The darkness outside seemed less ominous.
"Thy will be done, Lord," JJ whispered, his heart surrendering to God's sovereignty.
With renewed determination, JJ rose, his eyes locking onto the Bible verse. The battle ahead would be fierce, but he was ready.
With conviction, JJ concluded, "In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen."
Preacher Leandro's voice resonated through the auditorium, filling the hearts of the students with inspiration. "Beloved, today we're reminded of God's unwavering love and truth. In 1 John 3:16, we read, 'Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us.' This scripture reveals the depth of Christ's sacrifice, demonstrating unconditional love. We're called to emulate this love, laying down our own desires and interests for the benefit of others.
As Preacher Leandro spoke, his words painted a vivid picture of God's character. "We're not only recipients of God's love but also vessels, called to share it with a world desperate for truth." He paused, surveying the room. "Psalm 119:160 reminds us, 'The entirety of Your word is truth.' And John 8:32 promises, 'You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.' Truth liberates us from darkness, guiding us toward righteousness.
JJ, seated in the front row, felt conviction stir within. He thought about Saul's deceit and his own pursuit of truth. Preacher Leandro's words echoed in his heart, urging him to stand firm against evil. Tiffany and Maya, sitting beside him, nodded in agreement, their faces reflecting determination.
Preacher Leandro continued, "In a world plagued by deception, we must cling to God's truth. We're ambassadors of Christ, commissioned to spread love, kindness and honesty." His voice rose with passion. "Will you join me in this quest for truth? Will you stand against darkness, embracing the radiant light of God's love?"
The assembly responded with a unified "Amen!" as Preacher Leandro concluded, "Heavenly Father, fill us with Your love and truth. May our lives reflect Your character. May we be beacons of hope in a world desperate for Your light. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."
In the bustling cafeteria, JJ spotted Alex, a senior and leader of the campus ministry team, sitting at a corner table. He weaved through the lunch crowd and joined Alex, who was sipping on a cup of coffee.
"Hey, JJ! How's it going?" Alex asked, his warm smile inviting conversation.
"It's been a wild ride," JJ replied, taking a seat. "Preacher Leandro's devotion this morning really resonated with me. Have you heard anything about the rumors surrounding Fundamental?"
Alex's expression turned serious. "I've heard whispers, but nothing concrete. What's bothering you?"
JJ hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Just some suspicious interactions with Saul. I'm trying to stay vigilant." Alex nodded thoughtfully.
"Stay close to God, JJ. We need truth-seekers like you. By the way, have you considered joining our campus ministry team? We could use your passion." Alex leaned in, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"I'd love to! What kind of projects do you have planned?" JJ asked, his interest piqued.
"We're launching a Bible study series, focusing on spiritual warfare and discernment. We're also organizing outreach programs for the community." Alex's enthusiasm was contagious.
"That sounds amazing! Count me in. What role can I take?" JJ's commitment was evident.
"How about leading a small group discussion? Your insight would be invaluable." Alex smiled.
"Definitely. When do we start?" JJ's eagerness was palpable.
"Next Wednesday. We'll meet at the student union. I'll send you the details." Alex scribbled notes on his phone.
As they finalized plans, Tiffany and Maya approached, curiosity etched on their faces. "Mind if we join?" Tiffany asked.
"Not at all!" Alex welcomed them. "We're discussing the campus ministry's upcoming projects. JJ's on board!"
The group enthusiastically brainstormed ideas, their collective passion forging an unbreakable bond. Amidst the cafeteria's chaos, they found purpose – united in their pursuit of truth and ministry.
JJ and Alex strolled through the bustling streets, sharing the Gospel with anyone willing to listen. They approached a group of individuals, each immersed in their own thoughts. Alex initiated a conversation with a young couple, while JJ turned to a man standing apart, reading a book.
"Hello," JJ said gently. "May I share something uplifting?"
The man looked up, his eyes hinting at skepticism. "I'm an atheist. Save your breath."
Undeterred, JJ smiled warmly. "I'd love to discuss faith with you. What's your name?"
"I'm Ryan," he replied curtly.
"Ryan, have you considered the intricate design of the universe?" JJ asked. "Genesis 1:1 says, 'In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.'"
Ryan snorted. "That's mythology. Science explains everything."
"Really?" JJ asked. "The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that entropy always increases. Yet, the universe's complexity and order suggest a Creator. How does atheism account for this apparent contradiction?"
Ryan's expression faltered. "I...I haven't thought of that."
JJ pressed on gently. "God's existence isn't just biblical; it's scientifically plausible. Consider Romans 1:20: 'For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen.'"
Ryan's defenses weakened. "I...never considered these perspectives."
As they conversed, Alex rejoined JJ, smiling. "How's it going?"
"Ryan's reconsidering his stance," JJ replied.
Alex beamed. "Let's pray together."
Ryan nodded, and they clasped hands. JJ prayed fervently. "Heavenly Father, reveal Your truth to Ryan. Soften his heart. In Jesus' name, Amen."
Ryan's eyes glistened. Tears streamed down his face. "I believe," he whispered. "I accept Christ as my Savior and God."
JJ and Alex rejoiced, embracing Ryan. "Welcome to the family of God!" JJ exclaimed.
Ryan smiled, radiant. "Thank you for showing me the truth. I'm forever grateful."
As they parted ways, JJ felt the Holy Spirit's presence, knowing a soul had been saved. Ryan's heart, once hardened, now overflowed with divine love. JJ and Alex continued their mission, armed with the Gospel's transformative power.
