Chapter 1:

Fallen Star

Short Stories

It was raining when I saw her for the first time. Fallen star that lost her way home.

She looked so sad and lonely when she sat in cold rain trying to dim her light and fit in.

She didn't trust me at first, and I don't blame her for it.

Our world is a dark place in the end, and there are many people that will dim your light just because they can.

I sat next to her on the wet bench and stay silent, letting the rain soak my already wet clothes.

Anyway, what could someone like me say to a star?

Slowly she lifted her head and looked at me.

"You must be cold." Her voice was soft and full of care.

She moved closer and leaned into me, trying to share her dimming light and protect me from the rain.

Her body felt so cold.

Her kindness didn't make me cry. No... It was just rain flowing freely on my cheeks and dripping on my already wet clothes...

I took her hand, wishing I could give her some of my warmth, but I had none left. My hands were as cold as hers.

"What happened?" I asked softly.

"I lost my way home..." Her cheek rested on my shoulder as she tried to find some comfort against the pouring rain.

"Where is your home?"

"I... I don't know. The sky is so dark and cloudy." She shivered, and wet hair fell on her face, wiping off her tears.

I brushed it off with my cold hand and gently pulled her in, trying to protect her from the cold wind.

"Why do you care...about me?", she asked softly as new droplets of rain started covering her cheeks once again.

"You were cold...cold and lonely." I looked down, not knowing what else to say.

The pavement under our feet turned into a dark, murky river.

How could I explain it to anyone?

My fancy shoes were gone a long time ago. Captured by the dark river and carried away with the rest of the rubbish that normally covered the streets.

Losing them made me feel exposed and vulnerable as drops of rain danced on the empty street.

Her cold hand touched my cheek.

"Thank you", she said softly.

I looked at her surprised.

"For what?"

"Your care kept me warm."

She smiled and pointed at the sky

"Look, it stopped raining. Soon the stars will shine for us again."

I tried to smile, knowing that our time together was coming to an end.

With the clear sky above us, nothing stopped her from starting her journey.

We will part soon and she will become a distant memory.

Just like the rain.

She looked at me and took my hand in hers.

"I don't think I got lost" she said slowly.

"I found my home, but it looked different than I expected it to be"
