Chapter 21:
Veil of the Shadow Hunter
Leegna drifted in an endless void, suspended between darkness and light. In the distance, he saw flickers of moments—scenes unfolding and rewinding, as if time itself were caught in a loop. Faces of strangers blurred past, fragments of conversations overlapping in a chaotic melody.
Suddenly, he was standing in the middle of a bustling street. Everything moved in slow motion—people, cars, even the wind—while he remained untouched by the pull of time.
-His gaze fell upon a figure across the street, a shadowy silhouette that seemed familiar, yet distant. Without warning, the world surged forward, events speeding up to a blinding pace. He reached out, trying to stop it, but the moment slipped away like sand through his fingers.
Then, everything froze. Leegna found himself standing at the crossroads once more, but this time... different. The scene before him was identical to the one moments ago, yet he felt it was not. A voice, distant and echoing, whispered in his ear: You have seen this before... and you will see it again.
Just as quickly as it began, the vision shattered, and Leegna awoke with a start, drenched in cold sweat. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was waiting—an unseen force pulling him through time, teasing a power yet to be unlocked.
-In the upcoming evening Leegna was headed to the shopping mall while expecting something dangerous to happen . With his precognitive skill he was aware of his surroundings and therefore headed right to the scene.
-Leegna stood at the edge of the street, a familiar pulse in his mind. His eyes glazed over as the vision struck—a flash of light, screeching tires, and the crushing impact of a car. His body tensed, instinct taking over. He sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the vehicle that sped past where he had stood.
As the car vanished into the distance, the world seemed to still. A tear in the air shimmered before him, and two figures stepped through—a shadow wreathed in darkness, and a being that glowed with an unsettling light.
"You have meddled with time, mortal," one of the Time Guardians intoned, voice reverberating like the toll of a bell. "Fate cannot be altered without consequence."
Leegna felt a chill crawl down his spine, but his resolve hardened. "I didn't interfere," he retorted, "I only avoided my death."
"Your very survival disrupts the flow of time," the other Guardian hissed, shadows swirling around its form. "And for that, you shall be punished."
-The air grew thick with malice. One of the Guardians lunged forward, its form ethereal but deadly. Leegna raised his hand instinctively, feeling the pulse of his ring. In an instant, the velvet ring flared to life, engulfing his right hand, transforming into a dark glove that shimmered with raw power.
With newfound strength, Leegna thrust his hand forward. The glove collided with the shadow, and to his shock, it connected. The ethereal being recoiled, its form twisting in pain as black smoke wafted from the strike.
But before Leegna could react, the other Guardian struck. A searing pain ripped through his side as an unseen force slashed at him. He staggered, blood trickling down his body, but he raised his glove once more, calling upon the barrier. An invisible shield enveloped him, and the Time Guardians' attacks bounced harmlessly off.
Breathing heavily, Leegna seized the opportunity and fled, vanishing into the shadows of the city.
Leegna staggered into a narrow alley, clutching his side where the Guardian's attack had sliced through. His breath came in ragged gasps as the barrier flickered, the protective shield barely holding. The shadows of the city felt closer, darker, as though they were waiting for the moment he would fall.
He slumped against the cold stone wall, feeling the ache spread through his body. The glove had disappeared, shrinking back into the dark velvet ring on his finger. He glanced at it, the faint glow fading, but the power still lingered, pulsing in sync with his heartbeat.
That was close... too close, he thought, wincing as pain shot through him.
As he rested, images from his dream returned, flashes of moments repeating themselves, the whisper that still echoed in his mind: You have seen this before... and you will see it again.
-Leegna shook his head, trying to push the thought away, but the unease grew. His precognition had saved him today, but it felt different—sharper, more insistent, as though something larger was at play. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had been meant to die in that moment, and by avoiding it, he had thrown everything off balance.
Yuj... he thought. I need answers.
Pushing himself upright, he stumbled forward, intent on finding the creature with whom he'd made the contract. But even as he moved, he felt it—time itself seemed to ripple around him, a subtle shift in the air.
The Guardians would come again. And next time, they wouldn't let him escape so easily.
