Chapter 23:

Fragments of the Past

Veil of the Shadow Hunter

Leegna's hands trembled as he stood in the empty kitchen, trying to piece together the remnants of the previous night. He could feel that something important was missing, something just beyond his grasp. The house felt eerily quiet—too quiet without Enzok's usual presence.

On the table, where the worn letter had once rested, he noticed something new. A neatly folded piece of paper lay in its place, the edges crisp, as though it had been placed there intentionally. Leegna's heart raced as he snatched it up, his eyes scanning the familiar handwriting.

Lee boy, you are all grown now. I have some urgent business to attend to, so I will be leaving the country.

The words hit him like a punch to the gut.

Leaving the country? Leegna reread the letter, searching for something more, some explanation for why Enzok would leave so suddenly. But there was nothing. No clue about where he had gone, no indication of when—or if—he'd be back. Just a simple farewell.

His chest tightened with frustration. "This doesn't make any sense!" he growled, crumpling the letter in his fist. Why would Enzok just vanish like this? It wasn't like him to leave without a proper explanation. After all these years, after everything they'd been through, why would his master abandon him with nothing but a few vague words?

-Leegna paced the room, his mind racing. He felt like something was missing, something important, but every time he tried to reach for it, his thoughts blurred. There was a gap in his memory—he was sure of it. What had they talked about last night? The Guardians... there had been something about them. But no matter how hard he tried to focus, the details slipped away, leaving only fragments behind.

"Why can't I remember?" Leegna muttered, his frustration bubbling into anger. He slammed his fist onto the table, the letter crumpled beneath his hand. What was Enzok hiding?

The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. This wasn't just a disappearance—it felt like a betrayal. How could Enzok leave him in the dark, with no answers, no guidance? They had been through so much together, and now he was alone again, without any sense of direction.

-Far from the city, Enzok stood alone in the dim light of a secluded forest. The air was thick with the scent of pine and rain, the sound of leaves rustling in the wind filling the silence. His expression was stoic, but a flicker of doubt crossed his face as he reached into his cloak, pulling out a small, intricate device.

The device glowed faintly, a symbol that pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat—something ancient, something forbidden.

A voice crackled through the air, though no figure appeared. "You've done well to keep him in the dark. For now."

Enzok's hand tightened around the device. "It wasn't easy. The boy is growing stronger. His abilities are starting to manifest."

The voice carried a hint of warning. "And yet, he remembers nothing of our conversation. You ensured that?"

Enzok hesitated. "Yes. His memory has been wiped. He knows nothing of the Twelve... or of you."

There was a pause, then the voice responded, cold and authoritative. "Good. His path must remain unclear until the time is right. You have your orders. Continue to watch him, but do not interfere unless I command it."

-He was bound to a power far greater than Leegna could ever know. But for how long could he keep the truth hidden?
