Herodotus once wrote...

The first documented wells are written in Herodotus' works about the Persian invasion of Greece. 

"Holes that appeared on the ground where Hades' demons burst out, from the darkness of the Underworld [...]". 

Many were slaughtered - Greek, Persian and animal alike. The beasts were magical and evil, constantly looking for prey. 

After the defeat of the Persians, the Greeks started assembling parties of warriors whose sole purpose was to hunt and bury these mysterious wells: they were called 'well hunters'. They would fight these otherworldly monsters and venture into the darkness of the wells, the death rates of a well raid was unimaginable. Yet, their motivation lied in their beliefs - these holes are tests from the Gods, they thought.

While the Greeks sent parties of warriors, the ancient Chinese sent armies, the Aztecs priests and the Celts heroes.

It was a worldwide phenomena: humanity was at war.

These beasts went by many names. Some called them demons, others monsters, and someone even dared to call them assholes.

Today they are known as cryptids and the well hunters are simply known as hunters. 

In the 1920s there was breakthrough about the cryptids: while most of them are a completely new species, some were normal animals mutated by mana - the source of magic.

And in 1978, the first human being capable of using mana was born in Kenya. Zane Odili grew to become the first superhero, leading humanity on the war against the wells. 

Soon after his rise, more and more mana wielding humans were born. As a result, in 2008 the United Nations founded the IHU or International Hunter's Union. From it the hunter ranks were created - G being the lowest and S being the highest. Hunters of high stature created their own organizations known as guilds and associations. 

To the surprise of the world in 2022 the most powerful hunter was registered in the IHU - the only human being to surpass the S-Rank. His name is Aleck, born in New Zealand and a 17 year old at the time of his registration. No notable physical features other than bright green eyes.

The way he used magic was unique, almost like he was using mana freely. And his attitude to becoming the Number One was extremely naïve. He loved the world and the world loved him. When he wasn't on a well he was stopping crime worldwide and helping people stricken by natural disasters.

Maybe he was the world's first true superhero.
