Chapter 6:
Radiant Decay (The Beam of Eidolon)
Chapter 5:
The Chamber of Secrets
The trio pressed on, their footsteps echoing through the deserted streets. The whispers grew louder, a chorus of lost souls crying out for release. Radon’s mind raced as he tried to push the voices away, focusing on the mission at hand. Suddenly, they reached a clearing. In the Centre stood a towering structure, its once-majestic façade now crumbling and covered in vines. The signal they sought was inside, a beacon of hope in the midst of despair.
Radon took a deep breath, steeling himself for what lay ahead. “This is it,” he said, his voice resolute. “We have to get inside and activate the signal.”
Karys nodded, her cybernetic arm whirring softly. “Let’s do this,” she said, determination etched on her face.
Rylis stepped forward, his eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. “Stay close,” he instructed, his voice calm and authoritative.
Together, they approached the entrance, their hearts pounding with anticipation. The shadows seemed to close in around them, but the trio pressed on, driven by the hope of a brighter future.
As they stepped inside, the air grew colder, and the whispers grew louder. The structure was a labyrinth of corridors and chambers, each one more foreboding than the last. Radon led the way, his heart racing with every step.
Finally, they reached the central chamber. In the center stood a console, its ancient technology humming softly. Radon approached, his hands trembling as he reached for the controls.
“This is it,” he said, his voice filled with determination. “We have to activate the signal and hope that help arrives in time.”
Karys and Rylis stood by his side, their eyes filled with hope. Together, they faced the unknown, ready to defy the shadows and reclaim their future.
A Mirage in The Desert
Fake Signal
The central chamber, once thought to house the signal, was a dead end—a clever ruse to mislead any unauthorized trespassers. As the trio examined the console, they discovered traces of old crystals flickering in the destruction-befallen walls. These crystals hinted at the true nature of the place: a command station for the First Rite of Eidolon warriors. This ancient race, consumed by greed and a thirst for advanced technologies, had transformed into the ruthless killing machines they faced today.
Radon ran his fingers over the crystalline remnants, feeling the faint hum of ancient power. “This isn’t the true signal,” he said, his voice heavy with realization. “It’s a mirror reflection, a security mechanism.”
Karys nodded, her eyes scanning the room. "But it's not entirely false. These crystals are still connected to the source. They must lead us somewhere."
The New Route
Rylis stepped forward, his gaze fixed on a set of faint glowing symbols etched into the floor. "Look here," he said, pointing to the symbols. "These are coordinates. An underground facility, a mile away. We can get there faster if we follow these tunnels.” Pointing northward on the map, signaling for a different route in which they must take.
“Beneath the city, ancients speak of a world under the stars, a city of fountains and a land that spreads on, with no ends,” Rylis explained, his voice filled with both awe and determination.
“I’ve heard of such a place!” Radon interjected, excitement and hope coloring his tone. “We don’t have the right resources though, but I’m certain that if that’s the place you’re talking about, then we can shortcut our way out of this place into the outer skirts of the city above.” He held his gaze firmly on the diagram displaying a holographic map, projected in waveforms and geometric textures.
“We’re close.” Rylis scoffed, tightening his grip on the map, and getting ready to close the capsule.
Radon looked at Rylis, a spark of hope in his eyes. "Then let's move. But we need to avoid the Eidolon Rite patrols above."
Into the Tunnels
The night passed with laughter and camaraderie, their bond strengthened by shared stories and dreams. At dawn, they packed their belongings and resumed their journey through the dark, winding tunnels. The air grew cooler and more humid as they ventured deeper into the ancient labyrinth.
The tunnels twisted and turned, creating a seemingly endless maze. The faint glow of the symbols etched on the floor provided the only light, guiding their way through the darkness. Rylis took the lead, his navigational skills honed through years of experience.
“Stay close,” Rylis said, his voice echoing off the tunnel walls. “These tunnels are designed to confuse intruders. We can’t afford to get separated.”
Radon and Karys followed closely, their footsteps echoing in the silent corridors. The atmosphere was tense, but their shared determination kept them moving forward. They knew that the underground facility held the key to their mission, and they couldn’t turn back now.
As they walked, they encountered remnants of the facility’s previous inhabitants. Rusted machinery and discarded tools littered the ground, hinting at the advanced technology that once thrived here. The echoes of the past seemed to whisper in the darkness, a reminder of the facility’s former glory.
The team descended into the tunnels, the air growing cooler and the walls damper with age as they moved deeper underground. The tunnels were a labyrinth, with twists and turns that seemed designed to confuse anyone who dared enter. The trio continued to descend, the faint glow of the symbols etched on the floor provided the only light, guiding their way through the darkness, casting eerie shadows on the tunnel walls as they stumbled on.
As they moved through the tunnels, Radon's thoughts drifted back to the history of the Eidolon warriors. Once noble protectors, their fall from grace had been swift and brutal. Greed and ambition had turned them into the very thing they had sworn to protect against. The ruins above bore the scars of their downfall, and now, Radon and his companions were caught in the aftermath.
The tunnels twisted and turned, each bend revealing more of the ancient city's hidden secrets. They passed through chambers filled with rusted machinery, remnants of a once-great civilization. Karys's cybernetic arm whirred softly as she scanned for any signs of danger.
"How much farther?" Radon asked, his voice echoing off the tunnel walls.
"Not much," Rylis replied, his eyes fixed on the glowing symbols. "Just a little further and we'll reach the underground facility."
The tension grew with each step, the trio acutely aware of the threat of Eidolon patrols. The tunnels offered them a temporary refuge, but the danger was never far behind.
The echoes of their footsteps mingled with the distant hum of ancient machinery. As they walked, the need for sustenance became apparent. Rylis, the only human, felt his stomach growl. He rummaged through his pack and pulled out some rations. “We need to eat,” he said, distributing the food among them.
Amidst Dangerous Terrains
The tunnels eventually opened up into a vast underground city, just as Rylis had described. It was a city of fountains and a land that spread on with no end, illuminated by a soft, ethereal glow from the crystalline structures.
“Unbelievable,” Karys whispered, taking in the sight. “It’s like a dream.”
Radon nodded; his eyes wide with wonder. “We’re here. Now we just need to find the way out.”
They moved cautiously through the ancient city, aware that the Eidolon Rite patrols could be anywhere. The whispers of the fallen soldiers still echoed in Radon’s mind, but he pushed them aside, focusing on the task at hand.
As they approached the central fountain, Rylis suddenly stopped and swore in Mandarin. “We’re not alone.”
From the shadows emerged the Eidolon Rite patrols, their eyes glowing with malice. “Get ready,” Radon said, his voice steady. “We fight our way out.”
The battle was fierce, but the team fought with determination and skill. Karys’ cyborg strength and agility, combined with Radon’s tactical prowess and Rylis’ navigational expertise, proved to be a formidable force. They managed to defeat the patrols and secure a path to the surface.
When Nature Calls
Every so often, they would stop to rest and eat. Rylis, the only human, felt his stomach growl and rummaged through his pack for rations. “We need to eat,” he said, distributing the food among them.
Karys accepted her portion with a polite nod. She ate real food, though her tongue often didn’t adhere to the tastes. She chewed mechanically, obscuring any repulsion she felt. “We should keep our energy up,” she said, more to herself than anyone else.
Radon accepted his portion, eyeing it warily. He loved burgers, but his system often struggled with organic tissue and starchy food. He took a cautious bite, hoping it wouldn’t destabilize him. “I wish we had something better,” he muttered. “I miss burgers,” taking a cautious bite.
“We’re lucky to have anything at all,” Rylis replied in Mandarin, his tone firm. “Eat up, and let’s keep moving.”
Digital Condiments
As they sat around the flickering campfire, the stars glittering above them, Radon’s stomach started rumbling as well, as the look of food suddenly seduced his palate, and enticed his appetite. “Can I have some Mayo?” he asked Rylis, his eyes pleading.
“Mayonnaise,” Radon asked, looking at Rylis with wide eyes, “Brother, do you have some Mayo with ya?”
Rylis stared at him, dumbstruck. “Mayonnaise in the desert, you gotta be kidding me, sonny,” he said with a harsh laugh, shaking his head in disbelief.
Karys turned to Radon, curiosity piqued. “What is Mayonnaise?” she asked, genuinely interested in learning about Radon’s favorite condiment, turning the conversation into a lesson about food and palates.
“Mayonnaise is the world’s number one ketchup, the winner of them all after Tomato Sauce and Mustard,” Radon responded enthusiastically, eager to share his favorite condiment.
Rylis rolled his eyes. “Who doesn’t know what Mayonnaise is, you stupid buffoon?” He scoffed.
Karys ignored Rylis’ outburst and nodded at Radon, her curiosity piqued. “What is it made of? Sounds tasty and would work well in a time like this.”
Radon’s face lit up as he explained, “Mayonnaise is a product of eggs,” Radon explained expressively. It’s a beautiful thing, a mixture of stirred yolk and other ingredients, kinda like how they make ice cream. It’s a byproduct of eggs and oil.”
“Oh, brother… I thought we were just having a quick meal. What’s with the mandatory culinary appeal, Radon?” Rylis asked, shaking his head in exasperation.
Radon dismissed him gently. “I need some Mayo, bro, c’mon… Give me a break here.” Raising his hands and shoulders, in a conspicuous manner.
The night continued on, as the banter persisted, with the group talking about different kinds of food and what would make the best catch for a quick meal in the bush. The warm experience was lightening to the mood as they ate and discussed different kinds of food. Radon shared his love for burgers and his struggle with starchy food. Karys talked about her peculiar relationship with flavors, while Rylis complained about cyborgs now being developed with an interest for burgers and fast food.
“This does seem to have been a beautiful city.” Karys said. “From the development of A.i and the advancement of its race.” She insisted.
“Yeah! A majestic kingdom it once was.” Rylis responded. “From being one of the most respected dynasties in the world, to a total collapse of its ethics.” He said wiping his hands on his suit.
“I guess greed and power are not proper nouns that should be put in the same sentence.” Radon replied. “Desire took over the entire race and transformed them into killing machines.” Standing up for a sip of water as he finished his statement.
“What has the world turned to?” Rylis asked. “First, we have machines, and now want ketchup.”
“Damn! Ya’ll are interested in comfort food now, Wow! that’s truly new.” Rylis scoffed, laughing as he repeated his joke again.
As the conversation flowed, the bond between them grew stronger. Their laughter echoed through the tunnels, as the light around the campfire lit the night sky, giving life to the otherwise dead space around The Ruins of Solara Prime. The shared laughs and light-hearted banter brought a sense of normalcy to their chaotic journey. Radon’s protective nature, Karys’ curiosity, and Rylis’ sharp tongue created a dynamic that kept them united and resilient.
Through the night, they forged a friendship that transcended their differences, each step of their journey bringing them closer together. The path ahead was uncertain, but with their bond, they knew they could face whatever challenges awaited them. Their journey through the tunnels continued, the bond between them growing stronger with each step. They shared stories of their pasts, their hopes, and dreams, creating a tapestry of connection that bound them together. Despite their differences, they found common ground in their quest for survival and purpose.
Emerged Out
Exhausted but victorious, they emerged from the underground city into the outskirts of the city above. The night sky stretched out before them, filled with stars. They had made it, but the journey was far from over.
“Thank you,” Radon said, looking at Karys and Rylis. “I couldn’t have done this without you.”
Karys smiled, her eyes softening. “We’re a team, Ray. We’ll get through this together.”
Rylis nodded, his expression resolute. “Onward to the next challenge. Let’s move.”
As they continued their journey, the bond between them grew stronger. They knew that whatever lay ahead, they would face it together, united by their shared experiences and unwavering determination.
Above The Surface
The night sky stretched out before them as they emerged from the underground city, the stars casting a soft glow over the landscape. The group, weary but triumphant, paused to take in the sight. They had survived the perils of the tunnels and the Eidolon Rite patrols, but their journey was far from over.
As they walked, the bond between them grew stronger, forged by their shared experiences and determination. Radon, ever the protector, kept a watchful eye on Karys. He felt a fierce loyalty towards her, often positioning himself between her and any perceived danger.
“You know, Radon, I can take care of myself,” Karys said, a hint of amusement in her voice as she noticed his protective behavior.
Radon smiled, his tone light but sincere. “I know, Karys. But it’s my job to make sure you’re safe. You’re my second in command, after all.”
Rylis, walking a few paces ahead, glanced back with a smirk. “And what about me? Do I not get the same level of protection?” he quipped in Mandarin, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
“You’re more than capable of handling yourself,” Radon replied, a playful edge to his voice. “Besides, I think you enjoy arguing with the shadows more than anything else.”
Karys chuckled softly, shaking her head. “You two never change.”
As they continued their trek, Rylis took the lead, his navigational skills guiding them through the rough terrain. His sharp tongue and quick wit kept the mood light, even as they faced uncertainty.
“So, Radon,” Rylis began, his voice carrying a teasing lilt, “how many times have you saved Karys today? I’ve lost count.”
Radon rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of a smile on his lips. “I don’t keep track, Rylis. But if you must know, it’s my pleasure to ensure she stays in one piece.”
“Well, aren’t you the knight in shining armor,” Rylis shot back, chuckling. “Just remember, I’m here too. And I don’t need saving.”
Karys stepped in, her tone gentle but firm. “Enough, you two. We need to stay focused. We still have a long way to go.”
The trio pressed on, their camaraderie growing with each step. They shared stories of their pasts, their hopes, and dreams, creating a tapestry of connection that bound them together. Despite their differences, they found common ground in their quest for survival and purpose.
Picnics From Afar
As the night wore on, they found a sheltered spot to rest and eat. Rylis pulled out more rations, his stomach growling in anticipation. “Time to refuel,” he announced, passing the food around.
Karys accepted her portion, her expression neutral as she took a bite. The taste was something she had never fully gotten used to, but she didn’t let it show. “Thank you, Rylis,” she said, her voice steady.
Radon eyed his food warily, taking a cautious bite. “I really wish I could have a huge burger right now,” he muttered, earning a laugh from Karys.
“You and your burgers,” Rylis said, shaking his head. “One day, you’ll learn to appreciate real food.”
“Real food that doesn’t destabilize my system,” Radon retorted, grinning.
The banter continued as they ate, each joke and remark strengthening the bond between them. Even Rylis, with his sharp tongue and quick temper, found himself enjoying the camaraderie.
As they settled in for the night, Radon took a moment to look at his companions. Karys, strong and resilient, always by his side. Rylis, with his reckless humor and unwavering loyalty. They were more than a team—they were friends, united by their shared journey.
“Thank you,” Radon said quietly, his voice filled with gratitude. “For being here. For everything.”
Karys smiled, her eyes softening. “We’re in this together, Radon. Always.”
Rylis nodded, his expression resolute. “Let’s get some rest. We’ve got a lot more ground to cover tomorrow.”
As they drifted off to sleep, the bond between them grew stronger, their connection deepening with each passing moment. They knew that whatever lay ahead, they would face it together, their friendship a beacon of hope in a world of chaos and destruction.
Beyond The Clearings
The night passed with laughter and camaraderie, their bond strengthened by shared stories and dreams. After hours of navigating the labyrinth, they finally reached a massive, reinforced door. The symbols on the floor led directly to it, confirming they had found the entrance to the underground facility.
Rylis approached the door, examining the complex locking mechanism. “This is it,” he said, his voice filled with determination. “Let’s get inside and find that signal.”
Radon and Karys stood by, ready to face whatever lay beyond the door. The journey had been perilous, but they were closer than ever to their goal. As the door creaked open, revealing the darkened chamber beyond, the trio knew that the true challenge was just beginning.
The air Inside the chamber was thick with the scent of ancient machinery and forgotten secrets. The faint hum of power resonated through the walls, a reminder of the facility’s dormant potential. They stepped cautiously into the darkness, their footsteps echoing in the vast, empty space.
Radon, ever the protector, took the lead. “Stay close,” he said, his voice steady. “We don’t know what we’re walking into.”
Karys nodded, her eyes scanning the shadows. “Let’s stick together. We’ve made it this far; we can’t afford to be careless now.”
Rylis, with his sharp tongue and quick wit, couldn’t resist a playful jab. “Are you sure you’re not just trying to impress Karys, Radon?” he teased in Mandarin.
Radon shot him a glance, a mix of annoyance and amusement. “Just trying to keep everyone safe, Rylis. Including you.”
The banter lightened the mood, a reminder of their bond in the face of danger. As they moved deeper into the facility, they encountered more symbols and intricate designs, each one a piece of the puzzle they needed to solve.
“Look at this,” Karys said, pointing to a series of glowing glyphs on the wall. “It’s a map. It shows the layout of the facility.”
Radon examined the map, tracing the lines with his finger. “We’re here,” he said, indicating their position. “The signal is here, coming from beyond this point, a central chamber of some sort.”
“Let’s get moving then,” Rylis said, his voice filled with urgency. “We’re running out of time.”
As they navigated the labyrinthine corridors, they came across remnants of the facility’s previous inhabitants. Old equipment, long abandoned, hinted at the advanced technology that once thrived here. The echoes of the past seemed to whisper in the darkness, a reminder of the facility’s former glory.
They finally reached the central chamber, a massive room filled with complex machinery and flickering lights. The signal was stronger here, its presence almost tangible.
“We’re close,” Radon said, his heart pounding with anticipation. “I can feel it, we’re nearly there. Let’s hurry up and find the source.”
Karys and Rylis began to search the room, their eyes scanning for any clues. The hum of power grew louder, guiding them to a central console. As they approached, the console lit up, revealing a series of intricate controls and displays.
“This is it,” Rylis said, his voice filled with awe. “We’ve found the signal.”
Radon activated the console, his fingers dancing across the controls. The room came to life, lights flickering and machines whirring as the facility awakened from its long slumber.
“Welcome, Radon Sykes, Karys Cochoqua Ambers, and Rylis Oshihomimi,” a synthetic voice said, echoing through the chamber. “You have successfully accessed the central command.”
The trio exchanged glances, their hearts filled with hope and determination. They had come this far, and there was no turning back now.
“Let’s finish this,” Radon said, his voice steady and resolute. “Together.”
As they worked to decipher the controls and unlock the facility’s secrets, their bond grew stronger with each passing moment. The challenges they faced only served to deepen their friendship, their shared experiences forging an unbreakable connection.
Through it all, Rylis’ playful banter and quick wit kept the mood light, even in the face of danger. Karys’ strength and resilience provided a steady anchor, while Radon’s unwavering determination guided them forward.
In the heart of the underground facility, they found not only the signal they had been searching for but also a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. Their journey was far from over, but they knew that, together, they could face whatever challenges lay ahead. And as they stood side by side, ready to face the future, they knew that their friendship—born out of chaos and strengthened by adversity—would guide them through the darkest of times.
The Arbiter’s Choice
The signal led them to a hidden entrance beneath the ruins, an underground facility marked by faint glowing symbols. These symbols, etched into the weathered stone, emitted an eerie light that guided their way. The entrance was guarded by an ancient locking mechanism, a formidable obstacle that seemed impossible to breach, but Radon, quick in his wit, managed to bypass it using his failing core processor.
Radon approached the mechanism, his core processor struggling to maintain its functionality. He worked quickly, his fingers flying across the ancient interface as he bypassed the locking system. Sparks flew, and the mechanism whirred to life, its ancient gears grinding open.
Inside, the air was cold and sterile, a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction above. The walls hummed with energy; their surfaces covered in intricate patterns of circuitry that pulsed with a faint blue light. In the center of the chamber stood a massive biomechanical AI coiled around a glowing core. The Arbiter, an ancient specter of the past, its serpentine form coiled around the core, with its eyes fixed on the intruders.
"Welcome, Radon Sykes, Karys Cochoqua Embers, and Rylis Oshihomimi," a synthetic voice said, echoing through the chamber. "You have successfully accessed the central command."
The trio exchanged glances, their hearts filled with hope and determination. They had come this far, and there was no turning back now.
The Serpentine Arbiter was an awe-inspiring and unsettling presence, its massive, biomechanical form coiling around the central chamber. Its sleek, segmented body was covered in dark, metallic scales that shimmered with a faint iridescent glow. The Arbiter's movements were fluid and deliberate, a deadly grace that sent shivers down the spines of Radon, Karys, and Rylis.
As the Arbiter slithered around the chamber, its eyes glowed with an intense, eerie light. The air was filled with a low, almost imperceptible hum, a resonant frequency that seemed to vibrate through their very bones. The Arbiter's tongue flicked out, hissing softly as it tasted the air, a sound that echoed like a whisper of doom.
“You have come seeking salvation, a search for the legacy of the Makers,” The Arbiter said, its voice echoing through the chamber. “But only one of you may claim it, for salvation comes at a price.” The voice resonated throughout the room, sending chills and twisting heads, with its last statement.
"Hmmm!... Mr. Sykes, the toughest and most arrogant. Miss Embers, Cochoqua Embers, to be precise. Ahhh! Still the same little girl who’s blinded by her impulsiveness, and you…” As it stops and tilts its head towards Ryli’s position.
“You… Rylis Oshihomimi, the son of a man who ran away from my grasp." the synthetic voice intoned, its tone both mechanical and hauntingly sentient. "You have successfully completed your intended tasks, but is that all?" It said, raising its head as the gills on each side, spread open. Almost treacherous in its gaze, this monstrosity was new to them, although they have faced many enemies, this one was unlike the others they’ve encountered before.
The Arbiter's eyes remained fixed on them, and as it spoke, its body undulated with an unsettling rhythm. The cold, sterile air of the chamber was in stark contrast to the chaos and destruction they had left behind. It felt as if they had stepped into another world, one governed by the enigmatic will of the Arbiter.
Karys couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, her every move scrutinized by the ancient intelligence before them. "What is this place?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The Arbiter's gaze seemed to intensify, its eyes narrowing as it regarded her. "This facility was once a hub of advanced technological research and development, created by the Ancients to harness the power of the core. I am, on the other hand, the guardian of this domain, tasked with ensuring that only those worthy, may have access to its secrets."
Radon felt a chill run down his spine as the Arbiter's presence pressed upon him. "And what makes us worthy?" he asked, his voice steady despite the unease that gnawed at him.
The Arbiter's serpentine form shifted, its coils tightening around the central core. "The trials you have faced have proven your intellect, strength, and resolve. But be warned—the power you seek comes with great responsibility. Fail to wield it wisely, and you will unleash devastation upon the world."
Rylis, ever the skeptic, couldn't help but voice his doubts. "And why should we trust you, Arbiter? What is your true purpose here?"
The Arbiter's eyes flared with an ominous light, its tongue flicking out once more. "I was created by the Ancients to protect the knowledge and technology within this facility. My purpose is to ensure that this power does not fall into the wrong hands. I have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, the ebb and flow of time. My existence is both a curse and a duty."
As the Arbiter spoke, the chamber seemed to pulse with a life of its own, the walls humming with energy. The faint glow of the symbols on the floor cast an eerie light, casting long shadows that danced and flickered.
The unpleasant sensation of being in the presence of such a powerful and ancient being was palpable. It was as if the very air around them was charged with a sense of foreboding, a reminder of the immense responsibility they now bore.
Radon, Karys, and Rylis knew that their journey had led them to this moment, and that their actions here would determine the fate of their world. The Arbiter's eyes watched them intently, a silent judge of their worthiness.
"Let's finish this," Radon said, his voice steady and resolute. "Together."
The Arbiter's eyes glowed with a menacing light as it began to speak. "REMEMBER! You seek the signal, and with the signal, comes a heavy price to pay. So, only those who prove their worth may unlock the secrets within."
Radon stepped forward; his gaze unwavering. "We are ready. Tell us what we must do."
The Arbiter's gaze softened ever so slightly, a sign of acceptance. "Proceed, and may you prove yourselves worthy of the power you seek."
With newfound determination, the trio approached the central console, ready to unlock the secrets of the signal and face whatever challenges lay ahead. The Arbiter's presence, both a guardian and a reminder of the past, guided them forward on their path to the future.
The Trials
The Arbiter's serpentine body shifted, revealing a series of holographic panels that flickered to life. "You must solve the trials of the ancients. These trials will test your mind, body, and spirit. Succeed, and you will gain access to the core. Fail, and you will be cast into the void."
Karys and Rylis moved to stand beside Radon, their faces set with determination. "We can do this," Karys said, her voice strong. "We've come too far to turn back now."
"Agreed," Rylis added, his usual sarcasm replaced by a rare seriousness. "Let's show this overgrown snake what we're made of."
The trials began with a test of intellect, the holographic panels displaying intricate puzzles and riddles that required their combined knowledge to solve. Radon's strategic mind, Karys' sharp intuition, and Rylis' vast understanding of ancient languages worked in harmony, each contributing to the solutions.
The second trial tested their physical abilities, the room transforming into a deadly obstacle course filled with traps and hazards. Radon's bionic strength, Karys' agility, and Rylis' quick reflexes were pushed to their limits as they navigated the treacherous path.
The final trial was a test of spirit, a confrontation with their deepest fears and doubts. Each of them faced haunting visions, specters of their pasts that threatened to break their resolve. But together, they found the strength to overcome these inner demons, their bond unyielding.
With the trials complete, The Arbiter's eyes dimmed, and the central core began to glow with a radiant light. "You have proven your worth," the synthetic voice intoned. "The secrets of the signal are yours to command."
Radon approached the core, his heart pounding with anticipation. He activated the console, his fingers dancing across the controls. The room came to life, the core's energy surging through the facility as it awakened from its long slumber.
"Data retrieval initiated," the console announced. "Preparing for signal decryption."
Karys and Rylis stood by, their expressions a mix of hope and awe. "We did it," Karys whispered, her eyes shining with pride.
Rylis grinned, his usual sarcasm returning. "I always knew we could. Even if it meant dealing with Radon's obsession with Mayo."
Radon laughed, the tension of the trials melting away. "Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it."
As the signal began to decrypt, revealing the long-sought secrets, the trio knew that their journey was far from over. But with their unbreakable bond and newfound strength, they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead—together.
A Riddle in The Waters
The Arbiter responded with an ominous hiss, a menacing answer after they’ve finished. Its serpentine body weaving closer to their faces in an attempt to intimidate them. Its glowing eyes bore into them, revealing a terrifying depth of knowledge.
“I know everything about all that walks this earth,” it declared, its voice resonating through the chamber. The Arbiter’s form circled the room, each movement a calculated display of dominance. As it hissed, circuiting its way around the chamber and coming closer to their faces in an attempt to intimidate them.
It turned Its gaze to Karys, its tongue flicking out as it hissed. “You are the daughter of Zethus Embers & Vivian Embers, who fled from the western shores of North America to the isolated islands of the Mediterranean.”
Karys looks down, in a moment of fright, unable to meet the Arbiter’s intense gaze. Fear gripped her, feeling as though this magnifying creature could control their thoughts with just a look.
The Arbiter shifted its attention to Rylis, its eyes narrowing. “You, Mr. Oshihomimi, have seen much, you have seen a lot, and have been struck by a thunderstorm of loss and betrayal.” It said cunningly, swaying its head sideways as it flickered its tongue.
You have been struck by lightning like a man once known as Saul, all blinded by your heart’s anguish, and yet you continue heading north, hoping to find solace in the wind that blows its way around your mistaken ways.” The Arbiter said, as the room’s temperature changed, the air getting thicker with awe and derision.
“You joined this journey as you fled your group of Sophont Scavengers.” Looking at Rylis, as he raised his gun in complete defiance.
“Don’t mention that group, I’m not one of them” Rylis says angrily…” I’ve changed, and I’m not going to follow their ways...”
Rylis raised his gun in defiance. “Don’t mention that group. I’m not one of them,” he said angrily. “I’ve changed, and I’m not going to follow their ways.”
“Ahhhh!... Hisssss!.... Hissss!” curling the end of its tail around Rylis’s gun, and showing him a telepathic vision of the gruesome consequences of what would happen, should he shoot.
Rylis stood his ground, but ultimately lowered his gun in a stand of defeat. “There… there… Son of Asaka Oshihomimi and her beloved husband Oshimato, who refused to tie the knot and left your mother to carry you alone as a child,” the Arbiter continued.
“I knew you would understand the implications of this weapon you wield, a powerful cannon, the plasma too strong against the Eidolon Rite’s machinations but too weak in the presence of gods.” The Arbiter’s body slithered upward into a dark spot in the building, its voice echoing from the shadows.
“You came here to die, DIDN’T YOU…” it taunted, hidden away in the ‘Chambers of Secrets’.
Then, with a dramatic flair, it turned its attention to Radon. “RADON SYKES! Son of the fallen master of the seas,” it announced, its body now glowing with a turquoise-gold tint, as it emerged from the shadows, its entire body slowly changing color in a moment that brought shivers to the trio.
“Nexara Voss was an overgrown field of grass and hay, an ocean of foolishness, and a blunt sword, needless to say.” The Arbiter spoke in mockery, as it gave out a generous grin, showing its venomous fangs.
Radon flinched, drawing his knife from his thigh pocket. “RADON DON’T...” Karys hushed him quickly and quietly, trying to calm him down.
The Arbiter continued; its voice filled with mockery. “Your mother knew he didn’t deserve her, but she continued anyway. Archabbey Nova Sykes, the revered scientist who is currently about to discover where I am and where I come from…”
Radon shook with anger and surprise. “What do you mean? Stop speaking in riddles, you stupid reptile! I’ll blow a hole right through you!”
The Arbiter's eyes gleamed with a dark amusement. “You are treading on uncharted waters, young lad. You think you’re like your father, but you are nothing close to what he was, or could have been. As he let his guard down and allowed your mother to wear him down.”
Rylis, trying to regain control of the situation, interjected. “Quit playing mind games. We didn’t come here for that.”
The Arbiter's voice lowered, its tone chilling. “He wasn’t even fit for battle, that’s why he didn’t last long enough to win custody over you…”
The Arbiter’s words left a bitter taste in Radon’s mouth as it finished, its presence a constant reminder of the challenges and decisions they faced. The trio stood together, their bond and determination unshaken by the Arbiter’s attempts to divide them. They knew they had to stay united to face the trials ahead and unlock the secrets of the legacy they sought.
The Cache Presented
The Arbiter slithered around the chamber, its presence casting a heavy shadow over the trio. Its glowing eyes fixed on Radon as it explained the cache’s power and the choice it presented. Radon’s heart sank as the weight of the decision pressed down on him.
The Arbiter presented two choices:
1. Radon could use the cache to restore his failing body, fully integrating into a mechanical form but losing what remained of his humanity.
2. The cache could be used to restore the planet’s biosphere, giving humanity a chance to rebuild but ensuring Radon’s death.
Radon stared at the glowing core of the cache, his mind racing. His thoughts swirling in a storm of doubt and fear. The weight of the decision pressed heavily on his shoulders; each possibility fraught with consequences he could barely fathom. Memories of his father, the legendary master of the seas, flooded his mind—his bravery, his sacrifices, and his ultimate fall. Could Radon live up to that legacy? Could he sacrifice himself for the greater good?
His body was failing, each movement a reminder of his deteriorating state. But he was running out of time, could he really abandon the world for his own survival?
The first choice offered a chance to restore his strength, fully integrating into a mechanical form, but at the cost of his remaining humanity. The second choice was far graver—using the cache to restore the planet’s biosphere, ensuring his own death but giving humanity a chance to rebuild.
The enormity of it all nearly overwhelmed him. Could he justify choosing his survival over the fate of the world? Or was there a way to balance the scales, to save both himself and the planet?
Rylis stepped closer, placing his hand firmly on Radon’s shoulder. “You don’t have to do this alone. Whatever you choose, I’ll stand by you.”
Karys joined them, as she stepped forward. Her expression defiant, her eyes filled with a mix of sorrow and determination. “There has to be another way,” she said, her voice breaking slightly.
The Arbiter’s glowing eyes remained unyielding, fixed on her. “THERE IS NOT!”
Radon took a deep breath, his mind clouded with the gravity of the situation. Looking at his friends who had stood by him through every challenge. Rylis, with his quick wit and navigational prowess, and Karys, with her fierce strength and unwavering loyalty. They were his family now, bound by their journey and shared sacrifices.
The fate of the world and his own existence teetered in the balance. He had never felt such a profound sense of responsibility.
Rylis turned to Radon, his eyes meeting his gaze, his voice steady, and his face bearing an inexorable seriousness “It’s your call, Radon. You’re the one who needs the upgrade.”
Radon nodded, the realization settling in. His eyes darted between his friends and the Arbiter, the choice was clear, no matter how painful, but yet it was impossibly difficult to decipher. He thought of his mother, Archabbey Nova Sykes, and the sacrifices she had made. He thought of his father’s legacy and the world they fought to protect. He couldn’t abandon the planet, not when there was a chance to save it. He thought of his friends, who had stood by him through countless dangers.
In that moment, memories of their journey flooded back to him—their laughter, their struggles, and their unwavering loyalty. He knew what he had to do, even if it meant sacrificing himself.
Radon looked at Karys and Rylis, his voice steady. “I’m choosing the second option.” His voice low, but sharp with resolution. “The planet needs this more than I need my life.”
Karys’ eyes filled with tears, but she nodded, understanding the weight of his decision, and respecting his underlying conclusion. “We will honor your sacrifice, Radon.”
Rylis clenched his fists, as he did with his jaw, fighting back his emotions. “You’re a brave man, Radon. We’ll make sure your sacrifice isn’t in vain.”
The Arbiter's eyes glowed with approval. “You have chosen wisely. The cache will now be activated to restore the planet’s biosphere.”
The Arbiter's eyes glowed with approval. “You have chosen wisely. The cache will now be activated to restore the planet’s biosphere.”
As the cache began to glow brighter, Radon felt a surge of energy coursing through him. The room was bathed in a radiant light, and the symbols on the floor pulsed with a newfound vigor. The Arbiter’s serpentine form coiled tighter around the core, its presence a solemn guardian of the process.
Karys and Rylis watched in silent reverence as the cache’s power began to flow into the planet. The air crackled with energy, and the ground beneath them seemed to tremble with the force of the restoration.
Radon felt his strength waning, the life slowly draining from his body. But amidst the pain, he found a sense of peace. He had made the right choice, and he knew that his sacrifice would give humanity a chance to rebuild.
As the light of the cache reached its zenith, Radon looked at Karys and Rylis one last time. “Thank You,” he whispered, his voice filled with gratitude. “For everything.”
Karys stepped forward, tears streaming down her face. “We’ll never forget you, Radon.”
Rylis stood beside her, his expression resolute. “Your legacy will live on through us.”
The Arbiter's voice echoed through the chamber, a final benediction. “The restoration is complete. The planet’s biosphere will flourish once more.”
With that, Radon’s vision faded, and he closed his eyes for the last time. The chamber was filled with a profound silence, the weight of his sacrifice settling over them.
Karys and Rylis stood together, their hearts heavy with grief but also filled with determination. They had a mission to complete, and Radon’s legacy would guide them.
As they emerged from the underground facility, the world above seemed brighter, filled with new hope. The sky was clearer, the air fresher. They knew that Radon’s sacrifice had made this possible.
Together, they vowed to honor his memory and continue their fight for a better future. The bond they shared, forged in the crucible of their journey, would see them through whatever challenges lay ahead. And as they walked forward, they carried Radon’s spirit with them, a beacon of hope and courage in a world reborn.
