Chapter 31:

Good Morning

My Job is a Mess, But So is My Love Life: Wage Slaving, Weird Co-Workers, and Wild Romance

Miles woke up early to visit the shrine for New Year's. It was his first New Year's outing with people, granted they were his co-workers, in years. He couldn't even remember going with his parents. What did his parents ever do for New Year's? They probably worked overtime. And everyone, minus Cyrus, was to be there, which sounded great. Ramona had texted him the night before, saying her family would join them New Year's morning.

He jumped out of bed to get ready; his sister's door was still shut. She had gone out early New Year's Eve and hadn't returned by the time he had gone to bed. Miles got ready in the bathroom, still untouched from the night before. He checked himself in the bathroom mirror, satisfied with his appearance before exiting. Then he opened his pet's room; the temperature was still stable. Now the door to his sister's bedroom. He found Leigha sleeping in her clothes from the night before. He would have to change the blanket for her later. He shut the door and tiptoed down the stairs. He was about to slide on his second shoe when he heard an ungodly wail.

"Miles!"

He sighed, stepped out of his one shoe and went back upstairs to find his sister hissing at him when he opened her door.

"Why is the moon so bright," she hissed.

"It's not the moon; it's the sun. It's almost 9:30."

She groaned, rolling in the bed and taking her blanket with her.

"Make the sun go away. It's giving my brain sunburn."

Miles rolled his eyes and exited the room, leaving the door open as he went to the kitchen. He pulled out a glass from one of the cabinets and filled it with water. He went to the medicine cabinet in the kitchen and pulled out a container. He took two pain relief pills out of the bottle. He then trotted upstairs, where his sister had tried to slither out of bed, attempting to make her way to the door to shut it. He set the drink and medication down before helping his sister back into bed.

"You shouldn't be so handsy with your big sister. People might get the wrong idea."

"We're in our house. We'll be fine," he assured her as he propped her up, giving her the water and tablets. She made a disgusted face as she swallowed, then downed the whole cup of water.

"More please," She held out the cup before falling over onto her bed. Miles took the cup and wrapped her back up in the blanket.

"Too hot," she whined, kicking the blanket, and her brother, away. Miles grumbled to himself, noticing his sister's outfit wasn't the most warmth inducing. He checked his forehead and then hers. Hers was warm.

Miles sighed. Trust his new sister to get sick on New Year's. He went back downstairs to get more water and a thermometer. He went back upstairs to find the covers were off his sister.

"Leigha, you need to keep the covers on."

"But it's too hot. "

"That's because you have a fever."

"No, I don't want it. Make it go away."

"Here," Miles said, holding up the thermometer, "this will help."

"Thermometers don't make fevers go away," Leigha whined but put it in her mouth anyway. He waited on the edge of her bed, taking a look at his watch. Miles might be a couple of minutes late, but he could live with that. He took the thermometer out after a minute. it read 38 degrees.

"Am I dying?" asked Leigha.

"Hardly, you have a low fever. Here, drink the water, then go back to sleep. I'll be back in a couple of hours."

Miles stood to leave. Leigha immediately grabbed onto him.

"No, don't leave me. I need you."

"You don't need me if you're going to sleep."

"No, I want my brother. I never see you, and I want to spend more time with you!"

Miles sighed, half tempted to push his way out of his sister's grasp, but as he thought of it, she tightened her grip.

"No."

"Fine, let me at least tell everyone. Drink your water."

"Ok!" Leigha sat up to drink her water. Miles fished in his pocket for his phone. He picked Anita's number since she would be the most responsible person there.

"Sister is sick. Can't make it."

Miles pocketed his phone as he turned back to look at his sister. She held her mouth as her cheeks and eyes bugged out.

"Leigha?"

She jumped up and ran to the bathroom. Miles heard the sound of her throwing up from her room. He heard his phone ping with a response from Anita.

"I'm sorry to hear it. We will plan another day for you to join a team bonding day."

Mile smiled at that and pocketed his phone before heading to the bathroom to clean up whatever mess his sister had made.
